I don't listen to Slayer for more than one reason. The lyrics are actually sort of offensive, I don't normally care for what the song is saying, I mean yeah, it's nice once and a while to have cool lyrics but I don't look for it in music ( I do like Cannibal Corpse after all), but with Slayer it's just ridiculous, aside from that the solos are terrible. Maybe Jeff's are okay I'm not sure but Kerry can't go without riding a whammy bar if his life depended on it.

A few riffs are kinda cool, but it also seems like a lot of the songs were like "Alright, I'm gonna play REALLY fast, and you are gonna play REALLY fast, an you, ummm, yeah you play REALLY fast, and uhhhh the bass go REALLY fast on the E string and then say some stuff in the microphone....YEAH WOO!"

I do like some slayer cds not the biggest fan but I would not go as far as to say the solos are bad. They believe in writing chaotic music and they hit that spot on. That is just their style. some people dont like it. They do write so brutal riffs tho smile.gif

thrash metal doesn't really go hand in hand with solos. Thrash is about the riffs man. There are only a handful of thrash that had great solo's in the music, the rest are just consisted of fast jobberish solos and dive bombs.

I dunno about that man. Metallica, Megadeth, I havent heard much at all from Testament but James Murphy being with them says something about solos. Early Blind Guardian, I think, can also be considered thrash.

I love the solos from Testament! Alex Skolnick is one of my favourite guitarists. Yea, I like Slayer but they are kind of cliche at this point. But agreed they have some brutal riffing tongue.gif

Yea, thats why I said handful. I listen to a lot of obscure thrash bands and most of the solo standards are like that ie fast incoherent solos with dive bombs. I personally don't mind it or hate it since I love thrash. Of course, bands still produced some decent solos with melodies, but its also lost from all of this.

Also, early Blind Guardian were Speed Metal like Agent Steel. I don't even know how Blind Guardian can be lumped up like Kill Em' All or Agent Orange or something.

Slayer is trash metal, and trash soloes are fast and ridiculus tongue.gif it's that simple. It actually goes very well with the image, really fast and agressive music. I think Slayer is one of the most important metal-bands in the world, I've seen them live twice and both times it was amazing.

In my opinion, Slayer has some rememboral songs, but often Im having a hard time trying to differ the song from each other, simply because they obviously have riffs that are quite alike, and dont get me started on the solos! Thrash isent really the thing I listen most to, but if I do I listen to Testament. Really love the guitarwork of Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson wink.gif

Slayer to me are a band you dont get into for any other reason than for fast aggressive music that can be catchy and melodic. There early work is really good, Some of the best Thrash albums, Hell Awaits, South Of Heaven, Reign In Blood etc., And the lead work is pretty obscure, especially Kerry Kings, Jeff Hanneman has some more audible and memorable solos though. Overall a classic and essential band for the development of thrash, Like VinceG said, A lot of thrash is more about the riffs than the solos.

Yes their solos are absolutely horrible, and as VinceG said, so are almost all other thrash solos. That makes thrash a horrible genre (generally speaking, there are some good exceptions) in my ears.

Thrash has bad solos?
You guys are crazy! Just off the top of my head: Testament, Annihilator, Metallica, Megadeth and Evile
Those are just the bigger names, youtube some of their solos. Yeah you guys already know Metallica and Megadeth, well those solos are typical of thrash

Sure they sound the same but it fits the frantic mood on the music perfectly

anyway, that being said, I CAN'T STAND KERRY KING'S SOLOS!!!!
He makes some of the most crushing riffs in human history and I'm sure he has considerable chops so it's really a shame he uses the whammy bar like a crutch. It works sometimes, but not every time!

Yeah, I can't imagine what you guys mean by saying thrash has no solos. Most thrash has pretty awesome solos...anyways...

Kerry King is like a chromatic solo guitar player - he plays ascending and descending notes really fast. It's kinda clear he has no formal understanding of music theory. HOWEVER, they make BRUTUAL riffs:
Reign in Blood
Blood Red
Dead Skin Mask
South of Heaven
...just a few - awesome riffages

Offensive lyrics?

That's the POINT! It's extreme bad*ss metal!
I guess you either get it or you don't sorta thing..

I didn't say there terrible solos, just incoherent, sloppy mostly just dive bomb abuse. I'm not complaining though since thrash is about the riffs, solo's just enhance on how crazy and fast the music is.

That being said, I also said that only a handful of bands had great or decent solos. I can name about 1-3 bands that had decent solos over 20 not so great solos. Even my fav's aren't known for solos. I don't care thrash for me is about riffs.
