"easy" Music Is Hard For Me

Jan 1 2008, 03:52 PM	GMC:er Posts: 18 Joined: 23-December 07 From: Birmingham, UK	Lots of practice, i am in the same boat some of the lessons they say are easy aren't easy for me, but at the end of the day i barely know the basics, and these will take weeks to learn and many many years to master, i feel this is the biggest lesson to learn... Learning anything takes time and patience, its nice to have a goal and ambition to play well but it won't happen instantly. Beginner Video Lessons I would seriously start there, even just as a refresher course if you know the stuff already. I have been playing guitar for about a week and while i still suck i notice improvements everytime i go back and play, those lessons will also teach you playing over multiple strings and position changing, now i don't know how experienced you are but i feel the lessons will help in some way. Yes, I think it is related to counterpoint, playing two or more lines at the same time. Violinists takes years of serious practice playing this (they call it "double stop" or "triple stop"), but guitarists tend to skip, because they already know how to play chords. What is the difference between playing counterpoint music and playing succession of chords? When you play chords, you usually change all the notes, but counterpoint music often requires to keep one note here and there while another melody is moving. So you need to develop independence of fingers. Here is an exercise: 1. play this leaving all the fingers on each fret: --------- --------- -1-2-3-4- --------- --------- --------- So, you'll see all your fingers on fingerboard now. 2. Leaving middle finger, ring finger and pinky there play this with your index finger. (Do not use "bar") -1--------- ---1------- ----------- ------1---- --------1-- ----------1- Not so hard, right? 3. Try the same thing with your middle finger. A little more challenge. 4. How about ring finger. Getting harder, right? 5. Then, pinky. A good workout. While doing this exercise, remember two things: 1. Your thumb should be relaxed. You should be able to move your thumb freely in the air. 2. If you feel any pain, stop it.
