GMC Forum _ Cosmin Lupu _ Metal Rhythm Collaboration
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 20 2011, 11:33 AM
Ahoy, ahoy GMC!
while I am mixing the Modern Metal Collab, I thought about starting a new one, thanks to the awesome suggestions I received during a previous video chat session!
This one will be rhythm oriented and it's going to test your composition and riffing skills! So, we shall use one of the drum backing tracks (attached in this thread) that I provided a few months ago (hope you enjoyed those and if you'd like more, we could start to populate that thread again) and all you have to do is come up with riffs as tight and interesting as possible to match the drum groove and fills as presented in the backing track! Use as much as you wish out of it, as it's not compulsory to cover it in whole
I would also be curious to hear other approaches over this track, meaning that, you shouldn't restrain yourself to metal only - you can play funk riffs over the track as well for instance! In the end we'll have an awesome MEGA GROOVE, interesting and colorful, with attitude, finesse and everything in between!
Let's use the A minor scale and the A minor pentatonic scale (I shall record with my baritone on this one so that we may have a growling low end )
The deadline shall be the 20th of September and as usual, I am waiting for your takes (wav. files and video files through whatever transfer systems you might like to use).
I attached 2 tracks - the one at 170 BPM is the one we shall use for recording the takes and the one at 130 BPM is the one which you may lke to use for practicing your riffs slowly.
here the audio file quick improvise but offer sugestion? new at this
We usually use rapidshare.com to transfer files, in order not to overwhelm the server thanks for joining mate!
I have listened to your take! There are some awesome lines in there, but this collab is all about rhythm please analyze the drum track thoroughly and come up with some awesome riffage I am sure you'll invent some cool stuff. Read the explanations of the collab in order not to miss anything and please send an avi. or mpeg4. file for the video footage.

I'm in! And this time, I'll be able to record something...been really busy with moving lately, but all will be fine this weekend

You know I'm definitely in, Cosmin. I've been composing a lot lately, hence my usual presence in the forums. I will come up with some riffs for you. I will probably just use the whole track because I just wanna. Is it alright if I record it like I would for a studio version (so I can get it as perfect and tight as possible), then mime to it in a video? This would really help.

Please do i deliberately left the drums only, so if you guys want to add bass, you are free to do it! It is part of your creation and THAT's EXACTLY what I'm trying to encourage!

Well I gotta wait until after Labor Day Monday to get some new strings for my Jackson. (14-68) The 68 snapped. I guess it was because I had tuned it up to Drop C for a short time and it caught up with me.

I haven't had my coffee yet and I was looking pretty dazzled at the fact that you managed to break a 68

I was just as surprised as you. I couldn't believe it. It snapped at the nut and and hung on by the threads. I had S.I.T. strings installed - actually part of an 8 string set. The guitar shop ordered them for me. I had asked for GHS Baritone 70s, but I see now why they installed 68s. You can barely pull the thing outta the tuning peg. I hope I can get a baritone guitar & 7 String one of these days. haha
I'm thinking it was cheapy strings...maybe. Do you know a 14-68 set I can buy that is a good string set? I'll just get a regular set of 14s instead of the set from that 8 string package. Is D'Addario a good brand? I couldn't find GHS strings the gauge I want.

Wow! I certainly will. I got some S.I.T. ones again today because I was desperate. They had them in stock and I just couldn't wait any longer. I had to rock low!!

Hi Cos !
Here's my entry.
I slipped from A minor in the end and added some notes from F# scale. Hope it's ok ? And do you need guitar and bass tracks separated like in other collabs ?
Wait, so I am I understanding correctly that we can play in Drop A? So that means this is to be in the key of A?

Hey Cozzy,
Giving the fact that i only knew about the collab yesterday and had only today to compose, here's my take! as i told you, i'll be doing the oriental stuff!
not my best tone for sure but i have to go for family time
let me know what you think man and hopefully next time i'll have more time to be more creative
COSMIN!!! Good news! I'm finally on a roll! After watching a Meshuggah lesson on YouTube, it got me thinking. What if I do something that's of course in 4/4 time, but has an odd feel. So I did it!! It clicked! I never have done odd time in a song before. But now I am starting to grasp it. I am very happy with what I have so far. Now all the lines are coming to me.
Posted by: Gitarrero Sep 17 2011, 05:15 PM
Jad, awesome take! I just read that you are open to other styles as well Cosmin...I've got a cool idea that I will record tomorrow, including video. This is gonna be fun! Christian

Hey Cosmin! I have uploaded my audio take to http://soundcloud.com/fireball100/cosmin-gmc-collab-170bpm-drop-a. I will get to work on my video very soon. I hope you will enjoy.
Just click the little down arrow to download it.

Cosmin,
I just occurred to me that you may need the track without the drums. So you can download that from https://rapidshare.com/files/4268121160/Cosmin_Metal_Collab_170bpm_-_Guitars___Bass_only.mp3.
I think I could have backed off the distortion a bit, but that's okay I guess. I'm gonna write some of my own drum patterns and re-record with lower distortion to make this my own song some day. Thanks for this collab, you helped me write a song.

Coz,
That's okay. I don't have any suggestions that I haven't said before. I love RED, and I know one day you will make a lesson on them. Please don't feel rushed. But in the meantime, I am practicing your other lessons. I've almost got that Metal Metrics 2 lesson down. I just need to clean it up. Too much string noise and not as defined. I want to please you with an awesome REC take - may not be "Aria perfect" but will be great I hope.
