A few years ago, me and some of my co-workers were called in for a meeting. As it turned out, we all got "the axe" in the meeting. And no... we did not receive guitars from our (former) employer. mellow.gif

This thread has certainly explained why I have felt like hitting my guitar against a tree sometimes.

Also, if "axe" means "guitar", does that mean that the real name of Guns n Roses lead singer is "Guitarl Rose"? ohmy.gif

Leave it to the young to explain axe history to translate into today's slang 101.

Apart from being a woodcutting tool an axe is a favoured weapon of both Vikings and barbarians all around the Medieval world. Some where double edged, they are considered bloody and very deadly with a sharp edge of attack.

'axe' became a slang term for an electric guitar or bass, usually used within the rock and heavy metal communities, who often like to view themselves as the modern world's very own barbarians - and, in the case of certain Scandinavian black metal acts, its very own Vikings.

Gene Simmons, bass player of the good old rock band some might remember called KISS, often played a bass shaped like a large double-headed battle axe with strings attached.

Not all guitars qualify as axes, but whether or not a guitar gets to bear the axe moniker is up to the axeman guitarist who wields plays it. Usually, your uber-cool new B.C. Rich model is an axe, whereas your old, trashed Strat copy or your pet acoustic is a shovel, lol.

I personally call mine an axe, because... it's quick, sharp clean attack, and shreds things to bits. Deadly in the wrong hands! biggrin.gif

For us English that would be the Lynx Effect!! As that's what it's called over here!

As for the real explanation, it's a mixture of Nihilist and Azzaboi's reasonings.
The term originated in the Jazz world of the 50's and stemmed from what Nihilist correctly termed as 'wood-shedding',at that time it did, indeed, refer to any instrument at all. Later the term was hi-jacked by the Rock fraternity and was more directed at Guitars and basses.
In 1980 there was a couple of compilation Albums called 'Axe Attack' which were compiled of all the, what are now, Classics of the day!!

I have both these Vinyls!!!

Nah, they don't believe in any effect here in India. Neither the AXE effect nor the AXE shredding effect (simply playing guitar). Girls here are weird.

I don't know? Maybe some stupid cheapo bollywood song (from the movies, that's what music means to most of the people in my country) You tell me. mellow.gif And by Axe shredding (simply playing guitar) I meant shredding on the axe. Not playing simple stuff.

It's always mind boggling to see those people in the bollywood movies, singing and dancing because of everything laugh.gif

There was this one time when I saw a movie with two guys being chased by the police on a motorbike. They were singing and bobbing their heads up and down, up and down while doing that. After a while, the chased stopped and everybody singed and danced (police and criminals) and then the chase continued... I had the weirdest feeling laugh.gif
