Here's finally Mission 3 smile.gif

It doesn't seem to be very smooth yet. Feels like there are a lot of micro-hiccups in there if you know what I mean sad.gif

And Mission 4 smile.gif

What I'm worrying about right now is the general smoothness. Just as in the previous take, there are a lot of small hiccups, especially when moving between strings (I think). Is this something that just gets better with time or should I work on this now and make it perfect before moving on?

You are ripping it up Soldier!! Your playing seemed quite smooth to me! It's probably good though that you can see bits that need work, as one is never truly "Done", as it were. In this case, though, I"d say you've more than done enough! You are playing with precision, which is my main goal in life, to get my students to play with precision, you are using good technique and a very steady pace. You are ready for a DEBRIEF!!!

Let's Debrief....

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Solid right and left hand technique. String Traverse can be flat out HARD and you make it look easy. Nice!

2.)Precise Pick Control: Never wagging the pick to far in either direction, it's always ready to hit the next note.

3.)Good palm muting: Not one extra string noise!

These first few Missions are just to get you going down a path that will set you up to be able to play the crazy bits that are to come later and to allow you to find a style of play that fits you and your body, mechanics, approach etc. You are doing very well here. Just keep at it!!!!

In short, ...

You Sir have just earned your FOURTH MISSION BADGE!!!!

and ...

!!!!!!!LEVELED UP!!!!!!!!!!!

On to mission 05 smile.gif
Although the pattern is more complicated and I play it 20 BPM faster now, it feels smoother to me than the last mission. I guess that's that elusive thing called "progress" biggrin.gif

YOU ARE RIPPING IT UP SOLDIER!!!
It's great to see you tearing through the enemy with suck aggression Soldier!!! I can see and hear the forward momentum in your playing and it's a wonderful thing. "PROGRESS" is often illusive and is sometimes so slow that it becomes hard to even perceive. You are progressing at a very good clip and it's easy to see the improvements which is AWESOME!!

They say "FORTUNE FAVORS THE PREPARED MIND" and you were well prepared IMHO partially due to your previous experience on other instruments. It's a great idea to add a bit work on other instruments in to your practice routine as it all feeds the same goal and draws from the same well IMHO. You can learn about playing guitar, by learning to play the drums (Timing/Right & Left hand Independence, etc.) Keys (Theory/Tonal Relationships, etc.). Even Brass instruments, and others without strings can give you insights that you can bring to your relationship with Guitar. Which is, of course, the most important relationship there is!!!!! smile.gif

Let's Debrief!!...

I notice that you are using ECONOMIC PICKING (Two Down Strokes in a row) when ascending from the B to E strings. WELL DONE! That is really the secret sauce to this type of lick IMHO.

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Precision and Control, together as they should be

2.)Tight right hand control and right/left synch

3.)good planted palm mute

Also, very good use of THE PINKY!!! Of course, this lick can be played without ECONOMIC PICKING and without THE PINKY. But I think it's perhaps "Best Played" using both, as those two things are fundamental to being able to progress through the crazy Missions that await you. You are on a ROLL Soldier!!

Congrats Soldier, you just ...

LEVELED UP!!

Credit where credit is due, but not in this case. I was actually strictly alternate picking as proposed in the lessons so far. I guess it seems like economic picking because the audio is apparently not perfectly aligned to the video. smile.gif

Btw: I read your pick discussion with Grappa the other day and when I bought some new strings some days ago, I saw a bucket of Dava picks at the store. I just bought one (the hardest of the Jazz III types) and so far I'm very happy with it. The best pick I've had so far because I have a very firm grip on them all the time. Thank you for sharing those smile.gif

Now about lesson 6: I had a quick try yesterday and I'm already running into problems concerning the pinky. When starting the pattern at the 11th fret, I cannot place the pinky on the 16th fret in a comfortable way. Either I use your hand position (which I call the bluesy position), then I can just reach the fret but my first finger will also move in the process (even just a little but enough to take the sustain from the pedal note). Or I use the classical hand position where I have a lot more stretch but on the other hand, being on the higher frets, my pinky now naturally rolls to the side and I hit the fretboard with the lower part of the pinky before I can set the tip onto the target string. Personally I would just play the B on the B string instead of using the pinky here but maybe that's the point of the lesson?

I think it's not a general hand/pinky stretch issue because I can fret a perfect 4th at the 5th fret quite easily (comes from playing 9th chords on the bass I guess biggrin.gif ). It only becomes a problem in the lesson's fretboard area because it's in the transition between classical and bluesy hand positions.

So my question really is, do you require playing exactly there on the fretboard or can I also play it at the 5th fret, for example? (Or even just with the string transition at the 11th fret). I will have to find a solution for this somehow but I'm not sure whether this is part of the lesson now or if it's enough to just practice that pedal note rhythm.

Glad the DAVA picks are working out!! smile.gif They have that handy grip area and are shaped like jazz picks but use a bit harder material so they don't flex much which helps precision quite a bit smile.gif You may end up using a .05 tortex for playing blues, but for these Missions, a pick like the DAVA can be a real handy thing!

MISSION DETAILS: The problems you are running in to with the stretch and pinky are, as you suspected, the entire point of the mission. It's meant to be hard to play and require you to push your stretch in to a new zone and use your pinky while doing so. It leaves the pinky out there to handle things by itself. It would be much easier to simply use another string. But that wouldn't get the same result in terms of "Sticking the landing" with the pinky and working your stretch.

You can adjust your hand in any manner you like so as to play the mission. Do attempt to play it as written, and don't worry about speed at all. You can do it at a snails pace if you do it clean and precise. If you find it's just a bit too much or if it causes pain in your arm, move to a starting fret that is a bit more workable. Remember, NEVER PLAY TO THE POINT OF PAIN. A minimal discomfort can be expected with doing bit stretches, but when you hit the PAIN Threshold you are doing more harm than good.
