Seeking Advice!, Didnt know where to post this :S Options

Hi Guys,

I am in need of some advice, and some help and was hoping you guys could help me out. I am often sitting writing lyrics and jotting down writing idea's and go back to them when i want and add to them, put music to them etc......but my advice is needed to help me go in the other direction.

For a long time now I have been wanting to write an instrumental piece for my girlfriend. I have been with her almost 2 years and for our 2 year anniversary I thought it would be nice to give her the song on a cd that I had written and recorded as a sign of how much she means to me etc "insert soppy comments here!"

But I am not sure where to start, or how to build up the song or anything. Having never written instrumental music before.......do I write it as if it were a normal song with a verse and chorus and solo or is there another way to go about it? Do I need different melodies or one melody with different twists to it?!?! I am so confuddled...Any information would be greatly appreciated......and I know this is the right place to seek help!!

It can really be anything you want. I wrote my mom a cheesy funny but sweet song for mothers day. It was like.. 6 chords, and some off timing, just having fun. You might want yours to be a bit more serious. Just hum the melody, put some chords to it, and see where your emotions take you. You might be drawn to have some buildup with a little melody or even a solo, but there is really no formula for "writing instrumental songs for girlfriends." Hope that helps

hi Iain, you could start composing one beautiful melody, a melody that shows what u feel and think about the person, in this case your girlfriend , when you got it, call this melody "main melody"
then, try to feel or imagine, an intro to this melody, thus a 2nd part, n come back to the main.
if you create a beautiful main melody, you´ll see how easy is create the song or instrumental piece complete.

You can start with either a melody or harmony. I think better option is to start with some simple chording, and insert main melody. The songs concept should be similar to a vocal song. You will need some main melody, verse melody, solo part etc.

Yeah you can start either way..I would start it like a normal song, chords first for intro, verse, chorus..And than compose the main melody (solo) over different parts

Hi Ian,

I would agree with the rest here, start with playing some chords that you think sounds nice. Once you did that just try and sing a melody in your head while playing the chords, if possible record the guitar so you can concentrate on singing or humming only. Each person has different approaches, but starting with the chords and then get the melody is a commonly used one
