Any reccomendations on a good camera to make some videos? I'd like one with really good resolution. Thanks.

Hey Monte, Do you have a "photo" digital cam? If so and you have the software installed, you can use it as your capture device in mm. Most will shoot at 30fps.

If not, what price range are you looking at?

I have a photo digital cam and it seems to be OK. I am going to try and post an SI lesson this week hopefully and you guys can tell me what you think about the picture. Your camera that you made for your MTP video seemed to have good resolution what is it? I was thinking maybe a hard disk camcorder. Haven't thought too much about price range because I don't know what is realistic. Thanks for any suggestions. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hey Monte
What is your budget if you don't mind me asking ?
You can go fairly cheap and have good resolution. Get some MINI DV camcorder , they are not too expensive and will definitely do the job for SI lessons wink.gif

When you say ones with higher resolution mate what do you mean?

There are 2 main categories:

1. DV cameras - they are generally with 4:3 chips installed and have resolution of PAL and NTSC formats, somewhere around 640x480)

2. HD cameras - they have 16:9 format of the chip and have HD resolution 720p or 1080p

We all use DV cameras and they can be found for a relatively small amount of money. HD cameras are a bit expensive, and if you have the money they are way better, but only if you have a good computer and lots of storage space. HD video is demanding for video production.

On the other hand DV, or miniDV cameras (miniDV cams use miniDV tapes) are cheap and useful for todays standards.
here's the picture of low-entry miniDV cassete and miniDV cam:

I am thinking the $200-$300 range. I was thinking maybe the JVC everio.

How much did that one run Ivan? I will probably just try the camera I have for my first SI lesson and try and get some feedback from everybody about the quality before I decide to buy something else. Thanks for the input biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

No problem mate, I'm glad to help. If you wanna use it for regular videos for internet recording mate, I think any miniDV camera would be good, just make sure it has Firewire interface supported.

If you wanna buy something from JVC Everio series I suggest GZ-MG155 cause it has Firewire. Other models don't have it, they only have USB 2.0 supported, so I think they cannot stream the video directly into computer. This is very useful, cause you will often wanna record everything straight onto the computer and have the cam wired to the PC all the time for smooth working flow.

Here's a JVM entry level cam that is IMO quite enough for good internet recording:

I would also recommend any DV cam in comparison to webcams etc...They record on miniDV tapes and usually have the firewire interface for transferring data..Just make sure you have the firewire interface on your PC , if you don't there is an extension PCI firewire card available for 10$ smile.gif

Hey Monte, believe it or not, I use my monitor cam that is built in and use my Toneport for audio. The trick is good lighting. I try to record during the day with as much natural light as possible.

For good resolution you should go for miniDV camcorders, since HDD Camcorders record in compressed MPEG-2 format which has much lower quality then if you record in DV-AVI format (either from a tape, or directly) smile.gif

I agree with Dejan, miniDV tape camera is I think better solution then integrated Hard Disk. Not only because of the compression as Dejan said, but also you sometimes wanna record something on 2-3 different tapes.

Ivan,
Were you saying I could get a camera that would record directly to my hard drive? I would like this, do you have a recommendation? Thanks everybody for the help!!

With a mini DV cam that has firewire connection neat trick is that you can either record to tape and than transfer it to PC thorough firewire interface (its in real time) or you can do that directly..Connect the cam through firewire and open your capture software and record from cam directly!
