GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Rock Ballad Style Collaboration - Video Comments

Posted by: Emir Hot Jan 28 2009, 04:57 PM

Hi guys

The comments will be uploaded here soon - give me one or two more days please. I decided doing video comments so I can play along and show you some tips rather than typing bunch of text.

Please download this introductionary video (28 mb) where I am talking about some recording tips and what you should avoid doing next time.

This is the brief of what you should NOT send next time. I had really hard time dealing with many of the takes so for the next time please keep this in mind:

1. NO STEREO TRACKS - there is absolutely no need for this. The only difference is the file is as twice as big, more time to upload, more time to download and more CPU power used to process when mixing

2. NO EFFECTS INCLUDED IN THE RECORDING - watch the video where I am talking about this and how you can explain what sound you would like to have

3. DOUBLE CHECK IF YOU EXPORTED THE TRACKS PROPERLY - there were 4 takes saying "with BT and no BT" but they were both with the BT. Also make sure both WITH BT and NO BT start from the same point. 3 of them I had to match manually as they were not exported from the same point

4. MAKE SURE YOUR GUITAR SOUND IS UP TO STANDARD - I gave a couple of tips about this in the intro video. Some great takes lost 50% of the quality because of the guitar sound.

Please forgive me for my terrible English accent smile.gif I sound worse than Borat hahah.

You're teasing us lol. I can't view video at work but I will give it a watch when I'm at home later.

Doing video comments is a great idea, Emir.
Though I didn't participate in the collab, I'm really curious to hear the collab and see your video comments smile.gif

Posted by: lcsdds Jan 28 2009, 05:22 PM

Awesome Emir!! This is exactly what I need. I have zero recording experience so I probably did every single one of the things you told us not to do. laugh.gif laugh.gif I will definitely fix these on the next collaboration. I agree with you as well that the video comments are going to be much more meaningful than a text comment. Thanks again for all the hard work you have put into this. MUCH APPRECIATED!! biggrin.gif BTW, you sounded much better than Borat!!

haha I know that, but he exists in the movie

I am thinking to separate each video for each take so everyone can download own part instead of watching the whole thing. Do you think it would be better? You can still download each of them if you like to see them all.

That is a great idea. With 27 or so takes it will be alot easier than to have to figure out where your take is. I will probably download them all though because I think I can learn something from every single take. I have been downloading everybody's take and keeping them in a folder on my computer so I could put the videos along with everybody's take. I think you are inadvertently raising the bar for these collaborations Emir. laugh.gif laugh.gif Or maybe you are doing it on purpose. laugh.gif

That would be awesome l although I think we can learn from everyone's take , and of course a lot more from the comments that you have for everyone of us, I would preffer 1 video wtih all the comments, but thats just my opinion.

I think he maybe planned these ideas biggrin.gif And I like them. I think they'll be very helpful but now I can't wait for the results.

I actually decided this morning it would be good to do a video. I am still waiting for 1 more take tonight so I can't post the third group today. Now I am uploading mp3 of the first 2 goups and recording comments at the same time smile.gif I will upload them one by one as I am finishing them. This will keep the thread busier and more of you will be more interested to see each of them so you can pick more "useful" stuff smile.gif

Posted by: berko Jan 28 2009, 05:43 PM

Thanks again for all your effort Emir! I'd prefer separate videos to make you comments more accessible. Oh and btw sorry for my double take with BT mellow.gif Never happened to me before... and I hope it never will again ohmy.gif

All in all this video-comment idea is a great initiative biggrin.gif

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Jan 28 2009, 05:44 PM

Cool. That's awesome. The anticipation of who'll get posted next will kill me. laugh.gif But a great idea as it keeps peopleinvolved and we can comment on each upload. smile.gif

Good idea but it sounds like alot more work. Since your going to have something like 3 seperate mixes of the collabs maybe just have the comment video that goes along with the players in that mix down. Then you could just give use the time frames of where to find our feedback. I enjoy and learn from the feedback given to other players and would just rather have one download per mix down instead of 8-10 seperate. But thats just mho.

Thanks for the intro video and the comments to come. The idea to do video comments is great! It's probably quicker than typing up the comment for 27 people. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jan 28 2009, 05:51 PM

I just had to jump in and say what an awesome idea this is to do video comments Emir. Also a more personal approach to separate them. I'm going to learn from this collab and didn't participate, I'm sure others will also! smile.gif

Sorry but I have already started recording them separately. Maybe I should have waited for more oppinions. I am going in order as written in the first post. The third group is not ready yet because I have one take missing. There are 26 takes in total. 2 cancelled.

Now I uploaded the mix for the first 2 groups together with the names of participants.

This is pretty much in order as you were sending them but somewhere in the middle it got messed up as some guys cancelled and I re-sorted my folder to show files by name. Sorry about waiting smile.gif

Posted by: Ajmurrell Jan 28 2009, 06:16 PM

Appreciate just how big a collab this was to mix/organise and comment on Emir. Great to hear you're uploading comments as video takes, that will be very usefull for all!

Thanks again mate, the mixes so far sound great - and look at me heading up Group 2 biggrin.gif hehe

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 28 2009, 06:25 PM

Well I just finished listening to the audio takes for both groups. This is the first time I have heard many of your guy's take in this collab.

Just wanted to say the mix sounds really good Emir and congrats to all the players. You guy's all sound great. smile.gif

It's exciting to think of how we are all going to be able to make the next one sound even better!

This is outstanding. Totally outstanding. Man, seriously what is wrong with you people? When I'm in GMC I feel like I am on a different planet. laugh.gif You are all kind, and helping above human capabilities. Not only instructors, yeah I cant know everybody here but all the GMCers I've known to this point were just the same. That must be contagious! And seriously this collaboration and the work you have done here is something that I respect with my every iota of my being. Really in some few collabs, collab leaders' work was just great, and I was thinking to myself how that could be ever improved.

Well, I can sleep now, really Emir, I seriously believe you have to be a superhero, you should be floating on a pool of ego with your playing capabilities and knowledge, instead, you make a collaboration, you spend several days to mix, to evaluate solos of everyone, write comments, take seperate videos for ever participant and really try to make us improve. Now this is something to be seriously respected. You are one of my GREATEST inspirations about how a mentor, a musician and a guitarist should be. Thank you.

Man, I really had lots of thought about writting this, but I feel an urge to do it. I am well aware of the fact that this is a job, you are paid for what you are doing now etc. But I am well aware of the fact that you didnt have to do all this and get paid anyway. Maybe I sound too emotional for some peoples taste, and some other may think of this even as a flattery but believe me it is not. I just wanted how I am grateful for all you have done, and I am sure all the participants here share my opinion. smile.gif

And by the way, great takes everyone, still can wait to hear the third groups takes... And with the help of great works like this, I am sure we will get better... laugh.gif

Well Emir, just watched the tips-video, you really set the bar very high for future collaborations.. What a dedication and interest for us poor amateurs!
Really nice, can 't wait to see the video-comments...
Of course, this must be extremely time-consuming, so I don't expect every collaboration to be as thorough as this. But you really set the pressure on the other instructors, they may hate you right now, I don't know... biggrin.gif

I think I'll apply for a permanent-member-of Emir-Collabs-card, haha... wink.gif

Posted by: Emir Hot Jan 28 2009, 07:06 PM

Thank you guys so much. To be honest this way is much easier for me to talk through than to type it. And at the same it is much more useful for you.

The first 2 videos are on the way. I hope I can do the first group tonight.

Each video is about 10 min long so it does take time to render, upload etc... I am using some simple WMV codec to save on the file size. The quality is not really good but I think it can do the job.

Your dedication and thoroughness is extremely appreciated by me, and only provide me with more and more motivation to get better it what I like to do most! Many thanks Emir smile.gif... btw I am gonna regret that I ever put Velvet in front of my name ... always results in being the latest tongue.gif

WOW Emir this was awesome!! What a great video, and what a great idea - I am really impressed with your teaching! smile.gif (I really enjoyed being in your other collab)

The only thing I missed here was an embeded youtube video - doesn't matter though I got the video to play in the end! smile.gif

Mixes sounded great as well - well done everybody!

Thank you Kristofer. The reason for this attachments are because I wouldn't really like these videos on youtube. I hope everybody can respect my decision on this. Keep them here for us and when I get better video equipment and talk more relaxed then we can do one promotional for YouTube.

Cheers

Yeah man, I agree Monte, there are lots of important tips there! I just watched and again and again impressed by this incredible dedication, evaluating everything like note by note. I am speechless!

On the other hand, the turn is mine, so I am terrified really, I know this will improve but I am no longer confident about my solo anymore laugh.gif

Wow, thank you so much for the comments!
And in video format as well, awesome smile.gif

I know exactly what you mean, I should build it up to a climax before I tone it down again for an ending smile.gif
Actually, when I listen to the solo again, I should have heard this recording it as it is a bit dull..
But I'm glad you like some parts and the sound smile.gif

I will record another take on this backing and hopefully you can hear it and tell me if I do better smile.gif
I'll do better on your next collab, I promise smile.gif

Thank you man, this is the whole point to help you improve your skills. Don't ever be afraid to participate in the collaboration, it will only help you. And remember this is not a competition or an exam so don't be afraid smile.gif

Posted by: enforcer Jan 29 2009, 12:41 AM

Man, I watched the video comments, and really, there is only one thing to say about it: Thanks!

Firstly, about tone issues, I recorded this solo in my fiancee's so, all I had to monitor my playing with little in ear monitors, so you are right about everything you say, and I was rather a little shocked to hear it was so bassy! smile.gif The treble issue is killing me for sometime now, because I own an all mapple strat, with a very treble sounding minihumbucker on the bridge, so in amp settings my presence and treble values was set to 0 and I shelved everything over 5kHz still that sounded treble biggrin.gif So I will try to do my best to do it better for the next time, even try to replace my bridge pickup if I can afford a new one.

About the tuning issue, you were right again, I played this with very old strings and this was a mistake, apart the inconsistencies on vibratos and out of tune bends which were one of my many technical weaknesses.

I was lacking totally the skills to bend vibrato and vibratos alone, I started to work about them like before 2 months in my 9 years of guitar playing, so I believe I overdid it as you mentioned. I will be more carefull and precise.

I will work with exercises you mentioned, I will die to make them tighter and accurate. Well here in Turkey we have an expression like: "A tailor is unable to sew his own rip" I dont know if it means something, but I gave the exact suggestions for my mentoree Jeremy in MTP, but I see that I was actually in need of these advices myself laugh.gif

Thank you for your great instructions, I want to say that this is the first time I had some actual one on one session with an instructor such as yourself and I am glad you provided me that opportunity. I'll play better, and work like my life depends on it, and will be better for your next collaboration bro!

Cheers smile.gif

Huge amount of EQ to make his guitar stand out in the mix.

Just managed to sneak a peak at my vid comments (not supposed to have speakers at work, but wouldnt have been able to wait till I got home laugh.gif)

Thank you Emir for this video, brilliant! 24 years is a long time, and I really should be a lot better, I guess I`ve only really started what I`d call "practicing properly" in the last 18 months and my biggest regret in life is not being more serious about my guitar playing at a younger age smile.gif

your comments are all spot on, the two main areas I`ve been working on recently have been arpeggios and the alternate picking scale runs, so your tips there are great and make perfect sense, I`ll certainly take on board your advice and look forward to the next collab

thank you again, very much appreciated smile.gif

Hey Emir, I just wanted to fulfill my playing story, as if I remember, I didn't give you it at its fullnes:
in early 90's I was playing a classical and acoustic one for something about 2 years (mostly for my family and friends wink.gif ) and then made a garage band with some friends and played a rythm guitar for about 2 years. Then I put mu guitar on a high shelf and didn't see it till now (it's over ten years, geez.... how could I do that??....) and took it away from it on Christmas a month ago biggrin.gif

I was never playing a lead guitar, and that's what I want to learn now on GMC, apart from making my rythming better and better smile.gif

Hey Emir, thought I also give you more detailed story about my playing.

So, as I said I've been playing for 2 years. It started around december 2006 when me and my classmates went ahead forming a band, I was playing bass at the time, but my friend played that too, so I took the role as the guitar player. We were playing some "Enter Sandman", "Sad but True" kind of Metallica stuff. Just covers. But that band just lasted a few months. So I was sitting at home for a few months playing Iron Maiden, rhythm guitar mainly, because those solos were to hard for me. And then I found GMC. That was 1,5 years ago. I started learning all sort of stuff. Practising a lot of hours every day ever since. Mainly lead at that time. On that summer I discovered Megadeth, fell in love with thrash and practiced much harder songs. Then around the end of 2007 my brother asked if I wanted to take the spot as lead guitarist for his Thrash metal band. I said yes. Then around January 2008 I wrote my first own song and solo. I have done my first and 5 gigs in total with the band last year. Few months ago, me and a friend started a Folk/Power/Melodic Death Metal band. This is the first time I've composed everything in songs, I always just done guitar riffs. And also with this band, composing things I can't play yet.

Well, that's pretty much all. Pretty messy, but hope it helps you smile.gif

Posted by: ztevie Jan 29 2009, 05:03 PM

I can only imagine the hours and work put down for this!?
Hope you don't get fatigue, and slow down towards the end... biggrin.gif
Then me, with this username, probably being the last in the last group may have this review: "Hello Mr ztevie! OK, dude, you need to practice some more. And tune yer guitar for god's sake. Bye!" cool.gif

It takes 20-30 min to do one video. I am not sure if the group 3 can be finished tomorrow but the day after most probably.

Posted by: Sondre Jan 29 2009, 05:10 PM

Guess I can be a little more presice about my history as a guitar player. smile.gif

I started about 16 months ago with a classic guitar. Played that until the start of last summer. Didn't touch a pick untid then, practiced only fingerpicking. When i got my electric i used 3 months learning the solo to The Unforgiven and Comfortably numb. Very bad spent time, should have focused a lot more on specific technicues. Join GMC about 6 months ago, but I didn't use any lessons the way I should. Been more focused laterl, and I have improved a lot. smile.gif

Of course a special thank for commenting my take, you gave me important tipps for improving my technique and the way of playing.
I will work on my issues and try my best, but I can't promise that I'm able to solve them all, because I'm not a guitar hero smile.gif . I'm sure, that we will see us again in one of the next collabs. Once again, thanks a lot for this exceeding collab and your work!

Emir:
Thank you. It's hard to describe how much I appreciate the depth you went to in your analysis of my take. Not only, is it so substantial to have a guitarist of your ability to give my work even a listen, but your comments were spot on, and something I can learn from immediately. I think one of the best ways for me to really nail what you have described is to go back immediately now to revisit this very solo and apply your suggestions. I'll do this tonight when I get home from work. I'm greatly looking forward to the next collab. Man, you've set a pretty high standard for us all, and that's a good thing. Again, a sincere heartfelt thanks for everything ... the great backing track, the great mixes, and your exceptionally fantastic analysis and critique of all the takes.

A big thank you for all your hard work in this collab, Emir. I have taken your comments on board and will work towards improving my soloing. I must do a lot of work on modes, and get away from the comfort of the pentatonic boxes. Also, I need to start building up a licks library. I have just begun work on sweeping and tapping lessons which should add to my playing. I'm still trying to tame my Digitech RP250 and will do some work on finding a better sound (the preset I used will now be deleted). Oh well, back to trumpet practice ... laugh.gif

Sorry for waiting guys. I had a problem with my camera and was fixing it till late. Yesterday I had one more request for the collab participation so I had to remix the Group 3 and include that last one. Now there are 27 participants. The mix for group 3 will be posted shortly and the videos for group 2 will be uploaded today as I am finishing them.

Rock on!

About 500mb but per each post edit. Every time I upload it tells me I have 500mb left so it's ok. I've been talking to Kristofer recently about this. Next time I will upload to youtube and embed videos here so GMC server has less files on it. We will create separate youtube account for that. This time it's ok to make it this way so I can test how it works and for the next one I can organise these videos a bit better.

Arh, I see. Yes, youtube embedded videos would definately be just as good a way if not better to do this.

biggrin.gif - That's an accurate representation of my face after watching your video response!

Great tips Emir, really personalised and extremely usefull. I will most certainly take full advantage of your tips in future recordings, I have Adobe Audition which I'm sure has the same features. I've always thought it would sound bad mixing two takes, but you made it clear thats not the case!

Thanks for your comments on my take too, really pleased you liked it. That movement to the bend higher up the frets really did cause me some problems, so spot on there! That was the bit I was least happy with and now with the recording tips I should be able to counter these problems.

Looking forward to the next collab, and lots of respect again for taking the time to make these video responses for us man.

Oh, thanks Kaznie! However, I know Emir will bring the big axe and do some serious woodchopping! laugh.gif Which is ok, I myself know at least 4 issues with this solo that could have been better/different...

I must say, everyone did a really good job on this collab, very nice to hear which experience everyone has also? I mean, I get very impressed to hear someone who played guitar only 1 year, play stuff I wouldn't have dreamed of playing after 1 year.
It gives another dimension listening to each ones contribution, when you know their background...

YESS! Now that all groups are up and rocking (I know it's been up for quite a while...) I just wanted to pop in again to watch some newer vids (mine included when Emir Hot speaks to Mr. berko laugh.gif <--- I liked that).

I'm aware that this is hell lot of a job and that many fellow GMCers in the last group have been paralyzed by excitement for the last 2 days... I hope everyone can make it until their turn wink.gif

So much great takes and great vids from Emir I still can't believe what's happening here in this thread!! IMO this is pure history for GMC and I can imagine that a decade later this whole event will be taught by Mr. Cockburn with his battered JEM in his lap in a GMC history-tutorial. laugh.gif

So keep it up Emir and everyone! I can't wait to see all vids shining and ready cool.gif

I have just seen you were talking to me in chat window but I was busy here with recording comments. Sorry I missed it.

There is really no the worst take. Every take has something great about itself. I think you are a very good player. Your ideas for music are great. When you have everything perfect (ideas, technique, recording etc...) then I can say PERFECT and still even if everything is perfect there is really no the worst take smile.gif

Reply to Emir's comments:

Kah-eh-lum-a-mid-ten-dum. Doesn't really mean anything to me, though your not the first one having a hard time pronouncing it - even I wouldn't go as far as to do that myself. It's really Caelum Amittendum, which is latin, a song title meaning "at the loss of heaven" or "the loss of heaven".

I'm not sure I'm that much of an experienced player, I geuss mentally I'm always trying to improve, but technique-wise and even the mental part of playing guitar as well, is lacking for me. I simply don't practice enough (read; I only pick up my guitar to jam a little or try to come up with new riffs/licks/ideas, which have been failing me the last two years - you can read about that somewhere else on the forum, I think.). So my only concentrated hours working with the guitar is usually just with the collaboration and whenever I feel like playing a few licks from lessons (just yesterday I was playing through your alternate picking lesson, but only up to about 50% of the speed...). I also started out with Muris' Extreme Neo Classic, which I knew was way over my head, but got that up to a speed that I felt was a good archivement, but then I haven't returned to it since. That's really one of my problems: discipline, consistency in practicing and practicing concentrated whenever practicing. I have gained much in my 7 months at GMC though. Especially at bending and vibrato. How did those two sound in the take, by the way?

Another thing is, which has actually become an obstruction in my learning process, as I don't take advantage of it. This could even be applied to when I went school as well. I have a very easy time learning new things, which either interest me, seems logical, seem reasonable or could just be more general stuff (of course I can't learn quantum physics in a day, but I think you get my point). Always had an easy time in school - took me half the time to do things the others used much longer at. In my later years, I've just become less disciplined than I once was, which means that I feel that once I've played or practiced something a few times, I'm comfortable at it. At some things I might be, but I often find myself thinking: "what if I had spent 30 minutes more on this instead of just playing some random sweep picking for 3 minutes". Of course I wouldn't gain 10 times as much, but I'm often told that I'm not taking advantage of my talent (in my later years in school I was always told that too), and I can agree upon that, but even though I sometimes regret it, I never have or usually don't feel the need to - except here on the guitar part, where it just seems my discipline escapes me and either my TV, PS3 or other computer stuff seems to shout out to me as well. The latter a stupid excuse, but I want to have time for those fun things too, but often find they then consume the entire day and by bedtime I've only then played 10 minutes guitar.

On to the next thing in the video:
I was very aware of some of the things not being exactly on the spot. I think I need to spend more time on collabs, instead of just 1-1½ hour right before the deadline. The bends in the start of the second part was not meant to be like that, but I had been through 100 takes and just said to myself: "Now you just go for the next one.". I know that's not really a good way to approach these things. This also results in the take not being 100% as I want it to be (which is difficult, but I guess in most times 90% would do).

I have some problems with timing on faster runs, which I've known for ages, and which is one of those technical sides as well. I understand the theory, have the lessons etc. to learn it, I just need to put more effort in it. I geuss that when I don't practice it with a metronome etc. it is still something that will come with time and experience (like through recording takes for collabs etc), but it takes a lot longer, and will also result in more criticism. I don't know why I've chosen that road and I don't know why I ain't changing it, but I geuss it comes down to my lack of practice routine discipline again.

Thanks for the comment on the sound, though I geuss credit should go to Muris - used his settings found at the forum for base and then tweaked it a bit.

I know what you mean about the weak and strong parts, actually. I think it's also an experience problem and maybe even confidence problem. The first part actually sounded a lot different in the beginning, but I kept developing it through the takes I did, ending up with what I did. I geuss if I had started some days before the deadline, I could have developed all the other parts as well. That's easy to say now though. When the calender is incorporated at GMC I'll make constant annoying pop ups telling me to start recording 3 days before the deadline! tongue.gif

About the three hits:
I had no idea they were there! Hahaha. I hear it now though, and I think it may well be the palm of my right hand as I moved it up the neck or something for the tapping.
What I dislike about the tapping is that I don't end it on the first beat of the bar.

Funny thing about the sound though. As I play it hear on my computer, and while recording my guitar sounds loud and clear on the backing track, when together maybe the guitar sound was a little bit lower, but nothing to noticable. I'll give you a screen shot on the ins at my soundcards mixer. They are quite turned up, because otherwise it's waaay to low, even though the volume on my Pandora PX4D is turned all the way up to 10. It is a bit weird, and I don't know if there is any other way to cope with it than what I've done.

When I recorded it in Audacity it did seem low compared to the backing track, but when listening to the take it seemed about on par. Not sure what that is all about. smile.gif

I did feel a little bummed out on the last part being like it was when I sent it in. The first couple of slow notes was really un-interesting to me, but I had no other ideas coming to me at that moment. So I totally see what you're saying on this.

I hope you have the time to reply to this too when you're all done with all the video comments.

Thanks for the criticism and compliments, Emir! It was truly a joy!

Hey Emir... Thanks a lot! I'm so happy right now! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

About tremolo-bar. I mixed the tremolo and bending. The part you meantioned I think was bending and I was aware when I posted the take that those dives wasn't 100% and that I accidentaly touched the tremolo bar when I landed on one note. But the rest went decently good and I didn't have more time, so I left it.

About the fast run. Yeah, I mixed alternate picking and legato, because the fastest stuff is like 30 bpm over my picking speed, but I could somewhat get it with legato. But it still wasn't clean enough, but I will always keep on practicing.

And that dorian note. I mostly just play what I hear in my mind. I think it sounds nice tho. I don't analyze the chord progression notewise at all, just listens to it, so I didn't have any clue that you were playing an F# or anything. But I have learned from others comments that this can be a good thing to do. To keep it more interesting.

And you can be sure that I will be in your collaboration next month and after that also. I think this was the funniest collab to participate in, your comments are so helpful and a really good mentor and as someone else said (sorry, don't remember who) it feels almost as a private lesson with you talking instead of me reading. Keep on doing collabs because I think you are doing a GREAT job. smile.gif

Hi Emir,
Thank you so much for your comments on my take. They were really helpful and really mean a lot coming from a player of your caliber. You mentioned that my arpeggios seem to use odd groupings and that is very true. In my early days I tried to learn a lot of EVH solos and it seems like he used a lot of quintuplets so that is something that has stuck in my playing. laugh.gif laugh.gif I will really work on my guitar sound for the next collaboration and see if I can't get the buzzing fixed. I have actually been working on my alternate and economy picking quite a bit lately and I am hoping that soon I will have it down to the point where I can actually use it in my playing. I am just much more confident with my sweeps, tapping and legato because I have worked on it so much more. All my guitar heroes in my early years were legato type players so I never really spent a lot of time with alternate picking. Thanks again for all your efforts on this collab. It has helped my playing immensely and been a lot of fun as well. biggrin.gif

Emir,
What do you think of Frank Gambale's style of picking. My ear really seems to be attracted to that sound and I have been working a lot lately out of his "speed picking" book. Contains a bunch of cool licks using economy picking. Thanks agin Emir, much appreciated and I'll definitely be back next month!! biggrin.gif

BTW, lcsdds is a password laugh.gif laugh.gif If I had known how active I would become on this site I would have picked a much cooler screen name!! LCS are my initials (my real name is LaMont) and DDS is what a Dentist gets for his degree when they graduate.

Thanks Monte, you are an awesome player. I know that EVH plays like that smile.gif But still in every of his phrases there is some logical structure that just works the way it is. He is a rock hero.

I have spoken to Gambale personaly a couple of years ago when he had a masterclass in my school. He is just a killer player. His picking is developed to an extremely high level and he is one of the best in the world. I know he uses sweep picking a lot but even he says that it works for some stuff and for some not. Depends what you are going for. If you want to sound more agressive with fast runs then AP just fits better. Learning both is only good for you. Gambale can also alternate pick whatever he thinks of but he can instantly switch from one to another technique any moment he wants. That's the advantage and he uses it when he needs it.

Hey Emir,
If we both get the boot from our wives because of GMC maybe we can get an apartment together, although we would probably both be too poor from the divorce to be able to afford anything. laugh.gif I remember when I first got married and I could only afford one guitar that my wife played a joke on me and hid it and then left the window open in the room that I kept my guitar in. She told me that somebody must have broken into the house and stolen my guitar. She didn't tell me about her hiding it from me until I was basically in tears. That is when I first realized that "I might have a guitar obsession". laugh.gif laugh.gif

I think my ideas are far beyond my technical ability on guitar and I have to get my vibrato nailed. Thanks a lot for the feedback smile.gif I really appreciate the time you have taken on these video comments. I will make sure I watch the video over and over to pick up on the tips. Day 3:
Wife: Hey honey, why are you down here? Why don't you go and practice some guitar? I wanna watch my favorite show on tv anyway...
Me: I was thinking I'm gonna fix those squeaking doors...
Wife: What! Oh, honey, those can wait. You're free from work next week, then you'll have time, or maybe the week after that.. It's nothing that can't wait, you go have fun. You know I'd never dream of oppose you follow your interests... I love you!

Too bad I'm so tired in the mornings... And to stay up late is not an option either. Then it will be "Why can't we go to bed at the same time? You care more about guitar than me, it seems... You don't love me anymore?"
I'm pretty lucky anyway, I work 5 week cycles, with 1st week morning M-F and free weekend, 2nd week afternoon, 3rd week free, 4th week night, 5th week free. So I have plenty of alone time. Now, all I need is some discipline to practice.

I'm pretty lucky anyway, I work 5 week cycles, with 1st week morning M-F and free weekend, 2nd week afternoon, 3rd week free, 4th week night, 5th week free. So I have plenty of alone time. Now, all I need is some discipline to practice.

Hi Emir

You are doing an amazing job with this collab and just from watching the other videos and listening to everyones tracks I have learned so much. I have nothing but respect for your talent as well as the effort you are putting into help us all become better players.

I must appologize to you for my previous post in this thread where you requested information about our playing background and how many years we have been playing. I gave you a general statment of playing time and left it at that. After watching these great video responses and how personnel you are making them for the students I now realize how important this question was. Once again I am sorry for me poor response.

Please accept this as a more accurate reflection of who I am and my playing background.

How long have you been playing?
Well I started I think at about 13yrs old and played for a few years. Noodled around and tried to teach myself some songs using an old record player my grandmother gave me. We couldn't afford lessons. I could play some AC/DC songs, Heart, 1 or 2 from Rush. Mostly just rhythm stuff. Parents got divorced and I put the guitar down till I was 18 or 20yrs old. Started playing more serious at that point. I was working and on my own and couldn't pay for lessons either. So I made a bunch of friends that could play and I would just watch and learn from that. Then I would go home and get my tape player out and work on songs. About 5 - 6 years later I made a decision to put the guitar down and go to a local college to get an education and a better job. Well that worked out pretty good and now I have a life and a wonderful family that supports me. A little more than a year ago I decided I was missing an important part of me. Part of my soul so to speak. So I bought a guitar that I always wanted but could never afford when I was younger and promised myself that I would finish what I started.

I have never had any formal training musically at all and as you can hear I could use some polish. I am completely self-taught and most of what I know I’ve learned by ear or has rubbed off on me just from being around other great players. I would like to learn more theory and techniques so that I can better express myself musically. I can’t play 16th triplets at 250bpm or do a lot of flashy things (well yet). But one thing I think I do correct is play within my abilities and do my best to make a musical statement.

Thanks for your time and efforts,

Jeff

That wife thing can be a bit... How should I put it? Confusing?
You know, those conversations that can go something like this:
Day 1:
Me: Honey, I'll go upstairs and play guitar for a while, ok?
Wife: Sure! You know, I'm so glad you have this interest, I like that you play guitar. I will never oppose you follow your interests... You can play as long and often as you like! I love you!
Day 2:
Me: Honey, I'll go upstairs and play guitar for a while, ok?
Wife: Sure! You go play... Never mind those curtain you didn't put up for 2 months, or that you promised last week you would finally fix those squeaking doors...! *Unhearable evil mumbleing from wife's mouth*
I love you!

Hey Emir,
If we both get the boot from our wives because of GMC maybe we can get an apartment together, although we would probably both be too poor from the divorce to be able to afford anything. laugh.gif I remember when I first got married and I could only afford one guitar that my wife played a joke on me and hid it and then left the window open in the room that I kept my guitar in. She told me that somebody must have broken into the house and stolen my guitar. She didn't tell me about her hiding it from me until I was basically in tears. That is when I first realized that "I might have a guitar obsession". laugh.gif laugh.gif

We can make a competition. Let wives live together with their TV and shoping and we can rent other apartment and play guitar. Who do you think the winner would be? I think they would come back to us and surrender smile.gif

Thanks a lot for the tips Emir. I think you've helped me a lot. Now I know about your tip I don't need to record in one go even though that take was badly split into two. Now I know how to record exactly from a point whilst adding a bit of fade. That is great advice. I think you are bang on with me also. I think my ideas are far beyond my technical ability on guitar and I have to get my vibrato nailed. Thanks a lot for the feedback smile.gif I really appreciate the time you have taken on these video comments. I will make sure I watch the video over and over to pick up on the tips. I've listened to every other video also up to now and taken a lot from them.

I'm called OrganisedConfusion for a reason lol smile.gif

Cheers man.

Thanks. You have a real rock soul man when playing guitar. After several listening I heard great stuff. About recording, even the most skilled players use many tricks. There is nothing wrong about step recording, that's why we have this modern software to make our life easier.

Thank you so much Emir, I appreciate it extremely much, and I will definately sign up if another collab shows up! smile.gif

About the take:

Thank you for the tip about switching to the B-string for vibrato, and i will work on my vibrato and bending.
About the silence, it became a little longer than planned.
Next time I will try to process the take a little bit more, removing fuzz and stuff, recording inside a take.

Thank you for the sound-compliment. I use a Pod X3 Live, with some mildly tweaked Marcus Lavendell-preset and a trebly Metallica-preset in dual mode. The Metallica one I made myself, and the lavendell one I found here. I turned off the reverb and delay before recording tho, because I dont know how to do it later.

-Sondre

and thanks again! smile.gif You are doing a fantastic job!

PS: My name is a norwegian one. The 'e' is like en beg. You said it right the first time i think.

I guess you want to finish this as well, but really take your time Emir, i can wait a couple of days, no problem at all.

I have listened to the final mix a few times and compared the sounds to some original uploads of takes. How do you improve the sound that much? Just with EQ or do you use some other plug-ins as well? When i use EQ i often don't know what to do as just playing with the values ... do you have any hints or strategies for mixing things like this?

Well, there are many things when it comes to mixing and mastering. First I need to make good frequencies for the guitar and fit it in the mix. When I am happy that everything has an acceptable balance and nothing stands out too much or opposite, then I export the track like that. This is the case for this collab, otherwise I would need to look back on every instrument like drums, bass etc... For this one I used the backing as it is. After I import that exported track into a fresh project and play with EQ, compressors and some stereo enhancers. The signal needs to hit 0db point without distorting the sound and the treshold from where I boost the signal is about -4db (assuming the track is exported with the signal between -6 and -3db). There are many tips and tricks for production. This one is not close to something professional that you hear on an original CD which is mastered in a proper studio and analysed on 10 different monitors and 100 different devices like HI-FI, car, TV etc... I mostly use my ear and play some original CDs to compare the sound with.

To compare with original CDs is a good idea maybe to "reset" the ears. I often have the problem when i try to mix something that my ears are not "fresh" anymore after a while. Result is, i like the mix in the moment, but when i come back to it a few hours later it is just horrible. This is maybe normal and will get better with more experiences.

The way you mixed and added a lot of quality to each take was making me understand why you asked to get a dry guitar track. My take was already with a lot of effects and should have served you only to give you an idea what i have had in mind. I should have added a 3rd complete dry take as well, which was not possible for this one as the enjoying delay was part of the sound patch and recorded like this. I already learned this now and will for sure integrate this the next time ..

But you can listen to delay while playing but the delay doesn't need to be recorded. Use delay plugin in your insert channel in the software. Leave only distortion to be recorded from the POD or whatever you're using and put the delay plugin on "insert fx" in your track for recording. That way the delay works in realtime and you can hear it but it won't be recorded until you actually apply that effect to the take.

This i definitely need to do. Yes, i use a POD. At the moment i record with GarageBand and the delay plug-in or effects in general are not really nice. I already have Logic, but didn't put enough time into it to do the switch. Mainly i want to spend my time to play and practice guitar, but now i'm motivated to improve my recording skills and setup.

Thanks for the help Emir smile.gif

This has always been my problem. I always want to spend all the "guitar time" I do have on practicing but I am really starting to see that recording needs to be allotted some practice time as well. So little time and so many things to learn!! biggrin.gif

But once you learn it it's really a piece of cake. You just need to do it once and you will never forget.

Yes and it helps so much to improve on the guitar .. to try to play things more clean, more on time and to reduce effects to hear everything more detailed.

True, time is the problem now smile.gif .. i sometimes would like to open a "life history archive file" and update the years when i was 15-20 with a bit stronger practice routine laugh.gif

Emir, just listened to my videocomments.
You're right, I'm aware of all the flaws you pointed out. I actually had one or two more I thought you'd point out, but if you didn't see them, I won't tell you, haha... biggrin.gif
I realize it's easy to rerecord and cut and paste, but I don't know, maybe I'm old fashioned. I want to do everything in one take, otherwise I feel like I'm cheating...

The B flat note was not on purpose, and yes, it was kind of improvised. I had the structure of the solo pretty much ready in my mind, this faster run(which had the B flat) was improvised, and supposed to lead up to the bend on the 22nd fret(D note). I agree I should have re-recorded. It was supposed to be something like:

E ------------17-----------------------20-17-----17-20-22(bend)
B -17-20-22-----22-20-17-20-22--------22----------------

The out-of-tune A on the 6th string was supposed to have a heavy pinch harmonic with vibrato, but I lost grip of the string to make the pinch... dry.gif
The licks leading to this A, was Aminor pentatonic scale with some added notes. I often use notes that are not in the actual scale as "passing notes" to move within the scale- Sometimes it sounds bad, but this turned out pretty nice. I used these notes for the run together with bends, bluesy feeling?

E ----------------------------5-
B ------------------------5-8---
G -----------------5-7-8--------
D -----------5-6-7--------------
A -----5-6-7--------------------
E -5-8--------------------------

The last thing at the end was also improvised, leading up to G# at the 13th fret 3rd string. I missed, there was supposed to be a steady flow of 16ths...

Again, you've done a great and huge job with this collab. Respect!!

Next collab I will dedicate more time to get everything better, hopefully the wife will allow me some more time to spend with my guitar? rolleyes.gif

I know almost exactly what you wanted to play but if I pointed out all of the "wrong ones" the response would be only about that smile.gif I wanted to have some time to give you compliments as well because I think you're a great rock player man. Well done for this. And yes, passing notes are good, I use them non stop, especially the one you tabed here.

Posted by: utak3r Feb 1 2009, 02:09 PM

Emir, what do you use for EQ? I saw you have quite few points in it, it's really nice plugin smile.gif

Posted by: Velvet Roger Feb 1 2009, 02:11 PM

Hi Emir,

Thank you for all the comments. I was perfectly aware myself of the fact that my entry was actually below my actual playing ability to be honest, however I was just too busy and lazy at the same time to spend another night recording for a much better take (I really should have done that though, as I should not be happy with an inferior take - big lesson learned here smile.gif).

I think your comments were all spot on:

- Sound: I wasn't happy with that either, but you don't wanna know what I had to do to even have it sound like this ... I don't even have the opportunity to select other cabinets etc until very recently. Good thing is that I now have the POD Studio UX2 so I can finally start working on some nice sounds for recording purposes. Am I correct that your biggest problem with the sound was the actual amount of reverb, thus loosing definition to the tone? Btw, I bought a book on how to record good guitar sounds/mixing etc, as I surely see a lack of knowledge on my part there smile.gif).

- Vibrato: This will be my main piece of practice for the forthcoming month. I am getting really sick of my vibrato (or lack of it), and your comment is just the limit. Many thanks for this, as I at a certain moment need someone to get me across a certain level of irritation on my own playing smile.gif

- Wrong scale notes: After Ivan pointed me out very clearly that I lacked fretboard knowledge during improvising at his last collab, I started working continuously on knowing not only the 5 pentatonic and 7 diatonic boxes, but also actually connecting them in real-time in order to do something useful with my guitar. Your collab, was definitely too early in order to see any effect on that practice, however I surely see a huge improvement on that in my jamsessions with my band etc. now. smile.gif. You mentioned wrong scale notes at the E7 chord at the end of the first section, however I actually changed the mode so it fitted inside the E7 chord (however either I made a mistake, or the little lick was executed so badly that you could not definite it even smile.gif).

- Licks: You are absolutely right about the connecting licks: they are just too simple to be functional. I guess what happened at the time of recording is that all the more intelligent licks were just blocked in my mind (often happening, as when I am recording somehow all my playing skills are dropping (even more with a video recording). I guess all this needs is loads of practice. Something I am also going to do for future collabs is just write out some interesting licks (even if I can't play them yet) and practice as long as neccesary to get them recordable.

All in all, you made me aware of a lot of things, and although it gives me currently quite a depressed feeling (hence this enormous reply to write it away:P), I will be turning this around in an enormous movitation (I always need a bit of time in order to accept/deal with more negative comments, that's just my character tongue.gif). Don't get me wrong: I would never want someone to tell me that my take was good, if it was actually wrong smile.gif.

You are the best Emir, thanks for all the hard work you have put into this!

Cheers
Roger

Not only reverb but the frequency, too much in middle and starting to sound like a different instrument. Check Sondre's take, he had a great sound.

This should have been E major scale with the b7th. So either E mixolidyan or E Phrygian Dominant (even better one for this part)

There is no need for depression. Just work more on that and you'll get there. I always give my honest oppinion and that's better than if I tell you that something was great but it actually wasn't. How would you know in that case what you have to work on? Every single take had some good and less good things about them. I am also very aware of my own weak points and I also have a lot of things to work on. It just needs time and everything will eventualy sit in the right place.

Of course I know that I should be not depressed, was just angry at myself at the time of writing my reply, that's all smile.gif. The only good opinion is an honest opinion for sure and I won't give up until I fix all the bad points of my playing smile.gif.

Wao Emir, you managed to come quite far today .. ohmy.gif

Thanks a lot for your nice comments smile.gif. I'm really happy that you liked and could follow my idea of the structure. As my guitar playing is not extremely technical, i try to focus a bit more on structure and development within a solo. I'm often not sure if the listener will understand what i have had in mind. Thank you for you comments about this smile.gif

Yes, you are right. The faster part has to be more on time. Problem is, my picking is a bit underdeveloped, so i use a lot of legato when parts are getting too fast for me. Picking helps to accent notes and nail them down to the beat smile.gif. The technic you explained in another video to tab out faster parts to be aware of each note is helping a lot as well to archive this one day. Will work on this a lot ..

As said earlier, recording technics i want to improve. To have send two separated tracks for clean and gain sound is a good advice and makes completely sense.

Thank you Emir for your effort and time. I love you style of playing, so it means a lot to get some feedback from you smile.gif

Thanks everybody for joining this collaboration. Next month I will prepare a faster rock track. In this last video I took my chance to thank you all in the end.

Now I will be in chat for some time so you can ask anything if you like.

p.s. SonofDestiny please let me know if this video is uploaded correctly, my web page had to be refreshed when I clicked Submit button.

No problem smile.gif I am always available to help especialy for guitarists like you that are just starting. You can write anytime if you need help. My advice is to learn these things in order:

1. Major and minor pentatonic scales in all 5 positions
2. 7 Modes od major scale in all positions
3. Chords of all 7 major scale modes

After this start with technique development and use of all above. Start with alternate picking then legato (hamer ons and pull offs). After you can explore arpeggios, tapping... It's a long journey, probably about 2 years until you get to the point that you can continue yourself. Make sure you spend 2 hours a day for serious practicing and you can make it for sure smile.gif

I have a lot of respect for your work here and this says great things about your character. You are obviously a very hard working guy with a lot of compasion towards others.

Many Thanks!

Thanks a lot for your comments Emir , they are a true inspiration for keep practicing and improving every day. I have watched all the videos and I must that I have learned something from each one.

Regarding my solo , on the a minor arpeggio with the F note , I don't it sounded to me like it was a better anticipation to the dimished arpeggios , but playing the again it souns better as you said. And after the diminished arpeggios , I wanted to end on the A note but I felt like it was boring , maybe finishing on the minord third with a bend could sounded better right?

On the last lick I tried to play the E7 arpeggio but I just couldn't play it properly and nice wiith the backing , so I went with the easier choice. I'm starting to practice arpeggios from today.

I second tolek on his question , how can I improve my vibrato? Im really obssesed with this, an I really want to improve it.

Thanks for taking the time to give us such a cool and detailed feedback to all of us.

I'll be on all of your collabs.

Thanks again.

Thanks Berko. Yes it was a new and a great experience for me as well. To be honest I didn't know it will turn into this kind of in depth analysis. I just thought it would be easier to film it than to type text and when I started with the first 2-3 videos I realized this is going to be 4-5 days of hard work smile.gif I didn't have any special agreement with GMC about this and still don't know if I am going to be rewarded acording to the tme spent for this. I did it on my own inititative without thinking of how many days I need. However I think you guys can benefint much more from this than reading text and for me that's more important than any money. You are doing a great job on the gutar mate smile.gif

Oh, Emir! I forgot to ask something. What would you suggest to improve my vibrato?

Play slow solos and try to vibrate long notes in tempo. Notes are usualy vibrated in 8th note duration relative to the tempo. Make it consistent. On the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th string it is easier to vibrate towards the 2nd string (down movement). On the 1st and 2nd string you can push up. Try with every finger. The easiest is with the 3rd finger but press with all 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger (like for a bend) so you have more grip on the neck. Malmsteen has great vibrato. Watch some slower solos on youtube like "Black Star" or solo from "Save Our Love". If you look at some other videos from yesterday I showed that technique to some guys.

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say: Thanks so much for putting in so much time and energy (and quite literally almost blood!) into this collab, we've all recieved first class advice at no expense. I have a lot of respect for your work here and this says great things about your character. You are obviously a very hard working guy with a lot of compasion towards others.

Many Thanks!

Thanks Adam. You're doing a great job on the guitar.

Cheers man. You are a very good player. You don't really have problems with playing. The only thing I noticed is if you can develop your lines with some more logical approach. Always see if there is a more interesting way for positioninig notes within the melodic line. If you want those horizontal arpeggios, I have my very frist lesson on GMC about that, It's in 15 fps, I was still learning how to film the lesson properly, but you can pick that cool way of playing them horizontaly.

Great! Thank you. smile.gif

Hi Emir,

I am glad you enjoyed my take and I really appreciate the comments and advise. smile.gif I have learned so much from participating in your collaboration, not only from my video comments but from all the others as well. This was a great initiative on your part and thank you very much for taking the time to make this special for all of us.

I feel like I have hit a turning point with my playing and am looking at things completely different now. My next recording will be done using the step recording technique you mentioned. I’m not sure why I haven’t thought of doing this before. This will keep me focused on the chord progression so I can construct better melody lines and licks. I just need to remember to stay away from the “crack”! laugh.gif

I am really looking forward to your next one. Do you have any idea of when that will be?

Thanks. I have just seen your video again. I think all the things I mentioned are just minor issues that can be fixed in 2 months smile.gif Nothing really to worry about. You're a great player.

The next one will be sometime this month. Maybe in 10 days.

cheers
