That's a little bit of a myth. Both of those are simply containers for encoded media. M4A has a couple of interesting features that might make it seem better, but sound quality isn't in that list. It's up to the encoder, not the container.
1. M4A can maintain the same bitrate with slightly smaller filesize. Same sound quality, marginally smaller file. 2. M4A has fields for digital rights management. In every other respect, it's simply a different colored box to put your stuff into and fewer computers know (currently) how to open that box. It's just a container. -------------------- ::jafomatic

hmmmm....well i do notice a difference in quality between the two files

It's the higher bitrate which makes the difference, M4A format was never really used to save a few megas but to be able to have a higher quality in the same size. Your'll notice 128 - 256 kbps (near CD quality) vs 320 kbps is standard, but any format could have a higher or lower bitrate.
If you want quality then go for the .FLAC Audio Files format or even WMA Lossless! (24-bit files playing at 96 kHz, which equates to upwards of 10,000 to 11,000 kbps) Don't get me started on the dolby digital 5.1 surround sound...

Audio quality is expressed through the bitrate and sample size, more than name of the file container/codec standard, but yeah, AAC is designed to outperform mp3 in several areas. Support should exist, although I'm not sure if all the browsers support it (they should tho).
