Hi Cosmin,
I like Beatles, GNR, ACDC, Radiohead and more. I like listening to blues. My goal is to be able to play any blues solo or rock solo that I hear and know from what scale it comes from. I want to start learning some of my favourite solos first. I tried couple solos and I think my main problem is bending(it is usually out of pitch) and timing of solos (it doesn't sound like the actual solo). I am still slow though. I also like jazz guitar, especially gypsy jazz guitar. My goal is to be able to play Bistro Fada by Stephane Wrembel and Django Reinhardt songs. But I can start by less easier jazz solos of course. And of course, get improv ability and be able to play with my friends who can play guitar as well. Currently, I am a rhythm guitarist in my band, but that's because I can't play lead. I want to make our jamming sessions more interesting and contribute to it. It's all I remember of myself so far. I will point out if I remember anything I remember. Here's my youtube channel
https://www.youtube.com/user/elmirgtr. I have couple videos there playing nothing else matters for example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkAo_MFZX4k Here I am the one on the right side wearing green tshirt (skip the introduction to 3:25) By the way, where are you from? Thank you so much. smile.gif

Hey there smile.gif

I listened to your recordings and here's what I suggest - let's work on both your rhythm and lead skills as both can be taken to a greater level without any shadow of a doubt wink.gif Regarding the gypsy jazz ... Unfortunately as much as I appreciate it, I have no experience whatsoever in that field so, I can help you with the other things but I'd rather not dabble in notions which are foreign to me smile.gif

Now, tell me, how many time can you dedicate to guitar playing daily?

Playing rhythm got kinda boring biggrin.gif but I am always keen to improve. Depending on the day, 30-60 minutes, or none (during midterms and finals). I will tell you exactly when I set up my schedule. Classes just started.

Well, now mate smile.gif Let's start like this

- Rhythm/ riffing - we will cover chord shifting in the first part as i have noticed you need to work on this
- Lead playing - I suggest we start with understanding rhythmic subdivisions and the two most important techniques - legato and alternate picking, as well as articulation elements - bending and vibrato.
- Theory - what sort of knowledge do you have here?

Would you be able to tackle 3 lessons (meaning recordings which we can discuss on, to develop your technique) in about 3 weeks? I am asking so that we may tailor this program to your exact possibilities smile.gif

How are you Cosmin? Sounds good to me. On what videos I will be working on? I don't know where to start from biggrin.gif I don't have any knowledge on theory. I have seen some stuff about intervals and how to make chords, but I didn't understand how it works on fretboard. For example 1 3 5 for major chord right? But as I looked into C chord for example, I could not understand how to apply that. Just start from the beginning please. But I prefer working on my techniques more. I would appreciate if you taught me some basic theoretical knowledge though smile.gif Thank you Cosmin!

Glad you agree smile.gif

First things first here are the practical assignments:

Rhythm:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Van-Halen-Style-Rhythm/ please let me know if this one feels too difficult for you

Lead:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Hand-Basics/

Vibrato:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-5/

About theory, I think that a little crash course starting from the basics will not harm you at all smile.gif Let's start here:

1) We have the major scale built up using this formula: w w h w w w h.

w = whole step
h = half step

2) Any natural major scale is built after this formula. Example:

C D E F G A B C

there's a w between C and D
there's a w between D and E
there's a h between E and F
there's a w between F and G
there's a w between G and A
there's a w between A and B
there's a h between B and C

Now, if you look at your guitar, you will notice that if you play the C note (3rd fret D string) the D note is one whole step up, on the same string. That means that the note right next to the C note is C# and the note next to C # is D. So, 2 frets up means one whole step and one fret up means a half step.

3) Now, we have concluded that E is the major third in the case of C major and if we lower the major 3rd with one half step, we get the minor third and automatically, we can create a minor chord - C minor in our case.

Here are the formulas:

1 3 5 - major chord formula. Example: C E G
1 b3 5 - minor chord formula. Example: C Eb G

4) If you know these now , please tell me how does the G major scale look like - what are the notes making it up. (Use the w w h w w w h formula, starting from G) and tell me the notes making up the G major and G minor chords

Do we have a deal? smile.gif

I guess it would be : G A A# C D E F G? Will you teach me later how to put these kind of things into practice? biggrin.gif I didn't understand for example how A chord is constructed. I can understand first three notes are A C E, but then F# comes. Can you elaborate on the more? By the way, you can hit me more with theory smile.gif
I think I can tackle those video lessons. I will get back to you with my first recording in a week smile.gif Thanks again, you are awesome!

Hey mate, thank you for your kind thoughts! Looking forward to the recording and in the mean time, let's take a look at the theory things:

if you apply the w w h w w w h formula starting from G, you will get G w A w B h C w D w E w F# h G - correct? A # has nothing to do with G major and as an additional observation, watch out on not repeating notes when you write down the scale formula - you need to have all of them meaning that as an example, in the formula you found - you have A and A# but you don't have any B.

Before constructing chords, please apply the w w h w w w h formula starting from D and let's see if you can find the D major scale correctly smile.gif

E major: E F# G # A B C# D# E
Db major: I am not too sure. I tried to construct it, didn't work.

The E major scale is correct smile.gif now, let's see what's what with the Db major scale:

Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db I just applied the w w h w w w h formula starting from Db smile.gif

Db to Eb - w
Eb to F - w
F to Gb - h
Gb to Ab - w
Ab to Bb - w
Bb to C - w
C to Db - h

Can you try for the Eb major scale? Apply the formula by seeing what's happening from one scale degree to the other just like above wink.gif

Well, it's simple - since between E and F there is a half step - we deduce that between Eb and F we have a whole step smile.gif Tell me mate do you have any knowledge regarding the circle of fifths?

Well, this circle, will help you understand a lot of things about scales, chords and relationships between notes in general. Please take a look over the notes below and let's discuss - give me a sign after reading them and I'll bombard you with some exercises after making sure you understood everything biggrin.gif Deal?

Alright bro! Check this out:

1) Pick your favorite song
2) Learn it's chord progressions
3) Play them in all the keys using the circle - did you understand how to use the circle when having to transpose a chord progression? Can you do it on the spot? biggrin.gif
