I found that I don't really need a PC, today I use a laptop for music applications, recording, mix and master.
The current laptop works but I could do with something better and retire this one, for the kids to use. I'm curious about Apple.

The new Mac mini and iMac 21,5 inch 3,06GHz are the ones I'm looking at.

Mac mini is cheaper but comes without screen, keyboard and mouse. Adding that it's too close to the iMac to not concider the superior performance (according to what the configuration description)

I'm leaning towards an iMac.

Any Mac users here with experience?

Todd here smile.gif I'm a mac user and I"d say go for the iMac. I've got both and I can tell you that the imac is just a far better platform for music creation. The mini is great for media playback, and makes a great computer for your media room. It's got a remote control and when you attach it to a projector or a big screen tv it really makes a great playback unit.

For music and video creation, the Imac is much better. Better graphics card, faster proc, etc.

One tip, make sure you get apple care! Your warranty will run out in 12 months and your first repair will cost more than the computer.

Go for iMac man... I would love to get one but the power is such a problem here around. But you just have everything in a huge monitor and the best thing is you have absolutely no wires around.. Just a clean setup!!

I would definitly go for iMac! Its configuration is much better - you would need more RAM on Mac Mini and I'm not convinced it will be powerful enough for music production etc etc so you will end up spending as much as on Mac Mini as you would on superior iMac...

Uhm... does Mac's break often? Being very expensive to repair reminds me of what PRS says about their guitars; We do not under any circumstances make replacement necks. Imo bad customer service, possibly a deal killer. When spending a fortune on a guitarI would expect superior quality and possibility to get a replacement neck if the current one break in half. Same goes for a Mac.

Thanks, I will definitly have to check this up further!

My Macs rarely ever have a technical issue, but once in a blue moon if something does go wrong, like a power strip fails and a surge hits the motherboard, the Apple care will replace every component in the mac for free and if that doesn't work, they'll give you a new one.

Also, the software that comes with the mac (Garage Band) is a great way to start doing your own recordings. It's a killer app to get you started on computer based music creation and comes with tons of killer loops and sounds. You can even plug your guitar straight in to the iMac and use it's Guitar Modeling inside Garage Band.

For a few bux more you can get LOGIC EXPRESS which is the next step up and looks just like LOGIC which is what a log of Pro's are using these days.

I'm not a Mac user, but I would definitely go towards iMac for audio/video production. Mac mini is more of a multimedia desktop unit for living room. It's not bad, but it's not that comfortable for audio/video production.

Tracking and mixing - a mac is a good option. Mastering I'd have to say 'no'.

Macs are great for most audio/visual work but I wouldn't recommend one for mastering, apart from self-producing home demos. WRT mastering there is little native mac mastering software and it tends to be quite dated and of limited functionality and quality. The majority of the major mastering daws are on Windows platform - and mainly 32 bit OS as well.

If you do go for a mac in the end Micke - don't forget to make sure that the firewire is ok if you have external f/w audio devices.
