-What is your strongest point?
-Your favorite guitar players?

Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )

- Harmonize G major scale
- Build A7 chord
- Write ii - V - I chord progression starting with Cmi7
- D mi7 - Bb - Gmi - F What key this chord progression in?

Looking forward to start working with you!

Hi!

Goals: Short term I wan't to understand how shit relates i guess, how scales work over chords etc, I'm only familiar with the pentatonic, major/minor + blues note.
Long term I would like to be able to transcribe, jam, I would really like to jam, just hear what my friends are playing and just join in with my own stuff, and I would like to be able to get the melodies/ideas i have in my head onto the fretboard...
Nowadays when I play I mostly just noodle around to a backing track, trying to learn a few new licks, coming up with my own etc, but its not something coming from my head it's just experimenting with the sounds I get.

Weakness: Well everything i guess, I've only been playing a little over a year, well I bought my electric in 2006 I think but I learned a couple of riffs and then it sat collecting dust until last year when I was gonna turn 30 and I realised I still couldn't play guitar but always wanted to. So I'm counting from last year.
I really need to work on my tightness, timing and technique, I have a tendecy to zone out when I go through some lessons, i learn the first 3-4 licks and then I go to my own world, moves and twists everything I just learned to something different. Thought that with mentoring I would be forced to push myself abit more.

Strongest point: ... Hehe, when I develop an interest in something I get really dedicated, thats my strongest point as a person, on the guitar I guess I know my way around the pentatonic decently, I tend to get play mostly A-minor though, I started in that key, but the last couple of weeks I've started to move around and play in other keys aswell, I've memorised the fretboard during the last couple of weeks at work happy.gif

Favourite guitar players: There's alot of great players out there, however when I listen to music the guitar player can be godly but if I hate the compositon I'm not gonna listen to that shit again, to me the whole is the important thing, but I guess if I have to name one it's Rhandy, I think I listened to Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz constantly for 10 years, MrCrowley on reapeat for 2... laugh.gif

Theory questions (will help me to get a better idea where to start! )

I don't know anything! But thats the reason I signed up so I'll try my best...

This is gonna take some time...

Well thanks to this lesson I think I've figured out to harmonise a major scale

http://www.synapticstudios.com/2009/theory...h-basic-triads/

and some help with this

http://www.teachguitar.com/content/tmharmtriads.htm

G Major G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G

G-B-D Gmaj I
A-C-E Amin ii
B-D-F# Bmin iii
C-E-G Cmaj IV
D-F#-A Dmaj V
E-G-B Emin VI
F#-A-C F#dim VII
G-B-D Gmaj VIII

Build a A7

I know A7 like this

0
2
0
2
0
X

How to build I have know clue, I read that to build an 7 chord you add the note that is a whole step below the note that is the name of the chord and G is 1 whole step above A.

Since I tried the harmonising stuff with triads I thought I could build a 7 chord that way to, but couldn't find away, cant be possible... is it possible?

Damn its late... well I'm going away over the weekend on a fishing/beer trip, with some mates in the north of Sweden so I'm not gonna be able to do the last 2, I doubt I be able to either way, I have no clue what Cmi7 or mi7 looks like, but I can give it a try next week if you'd like.

Perfect! You are correct about the first one and did a very good job harmonizing the scale!
I will explain how to do the rest as we will go along! smile.gif
To start I would like you to do hands workout exercises those will develop your alternative picking technique very fast!!!
The trick is to practice it at a very slow tempo and get full control over your hands!!!
It is very important to master mechanical exercises you will get great results and will see progress very very fast!

Nice exercise, the switching from 8ths, triplets and 16ths, seems to be working wonders with my timing. Probably gonna take some time to be able to play it flawless.

Since I don't have any means to record atm I wouldn't mind some theory to tackle at the same time, maybe something that relates to the exercise? Is it the major scale?

SOunds good! Take your time!
I know you did harmonized G major scale and I would like you to add 7th chords now
Gmaj7 - Ami7 etc.

Also using the same technique let's harmonize D major scale
After that I would like you to find V of D major and build A7 chord here is the concept on how to build it:
I - III - V - bVII
Let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything! smile.gif

Hi, well life is abit hectic atm, last week of work etc, going back to school to get my engineering deegre this fall so I have abit on my plate atm.

However the excersise you posted is now part of my daily routine.

Haven't had time to look at the theory stuff yet, and i probably won't dwelve deeper into it for another week or so, but if you have any more excersises that would take my playing further along i wouldn't mind it, i still take the time i have to sit with the guitar for an hour or two each day.

Had some time at work today so I did the theory, I think atleast

G major harmonised with 7th

GABCDEF#G

GBDF Gmaj7 I
ACEG Amin7 ii
BDF#A Bmin7 iii
CEGB Cmaj7 IV
DF#AC Dmaj7 V
EGBD Emin7 vi
F#ACE F# VII
GBDF Gmaj7 VIII

D major harmonised

DEF#GABC#D

DF#A Dmaj I
EGB Emin ii
F#AC# F#min iii
GBD Gmaj IV
AC#E Amaj V
BDF# Bmin vi
C#EG C#dim VII
DF#A Dmaj VIII

Create a A7 with V

AC#E + G = A7

Correct? I wouldn't know, but I think it is wink.gif

You did a very good job! Everything is correct!
So would you like to continue with theory or get a new melodic assignment?

Ah nice, well since I don't have any recording means I guess it would be a theory assignment.

Wouldn't mind some melodic stuff aswell though.

Btw, I'm working on romance d'amour or spanish romance part 2, do you have any tips on barre achords shifting?
I really struggle when the third bar starts, the other parts are decent i guess, but when I'm supposed to do that
shift my fingers tense up and it really shows, and is heard... Ive been struggling with that shift a few days now and
I don't really get an improvement, once awhile its no problem but I wan't to be able to play it whenever I wan't not
just 1 out of 4...

-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
--5--------4--------4--------|--4--------3--------4--------|
-----2--------2--------2-----|-----2--------2--------2-----|
--------4--------4--------4--|--------4--------4--------4--|
-----------------------------|-----------------------------|
--2--------------------------|--2--------------------------|

When I'm there the playing aint that bad, and I can play the rest with little problem but its just when this bar starts.
Maybe its because it switches strings aswell I don't know, but then I think I would have problems on a few more bars...

When you are playing this part all you have to do is to move pinky the rest will stay the same!
I can make a video for you and show my left hand close up if you would like!

Ah totally missed you had answered, it aint the moving about when im at the barre accord in the third bar, it's the switch from bar 2 to 3 thats the problem, I just cant get a smooth transition, haven't been trying it for awhile, learned a waltz though.

Wouldn't mind a video on the left hand, and some theory to tackle

Cheers

Actually if you could make a short video would be even better! This way I can see if you are doing anything wrong!
It is not an easy style of music and I also think that practicing it at a slower tempo using a metronome will help a lot!
Do you have one?
Also the phrase you wrote is only 2 bars? Which one would be the third one?

Yeah I have a metronome, actually I have 2!

Gonna try figure out a way to film it with my iphone, I have really lousy lights in my apartment, ill have to buy a spotlight, actually tried to shoot a video of it the other day so you'd see what was happening with my hands but it just gut blurry...
But romance gonna have to be on a backburner for a few days, had to cut my fingernails after I helped some friends with some work at their house, i couldnt get em clean...
I can't freaking play fingerstyle without nails, not since I got used to it anyway, should be good for my wrist and fingers aswell, this part seem to be a really good stretching excersise. huh.gif

I phone camera will work fine! I just need to see your fingering and how you do that! It will be much easier to give you a detailed explanation!
Nails usually used in classical music and flamenco style so this would be perfect since you are interested in flamenco guitar!
They also have picks for sale that you can put on each finger and it can be used as nail substitution I am not sure if you have heard of those!
Let me know and I will do my research for you!

Been having some wrist problems so haven't been playing alot the last couple of days.
But today it felt ok so after warmup I recorded, wasn't happy with it so I tried once more, but then the pain came back...
So I'll just upload the first one, the part i have trouble with is between 0.40-1.10 (the part where my mouth starts moving! Not that the other is great, but I can play that clean most of the time). tongue.gif

Since my wrist is acting up I won't play for a couple of days so some theory assignement would be nice.
