I play Ibanez and Jackson, and i still struggle to nail lead runs on the higher frets, the 17-24 sort of area. It could be the way im playing or it might be the guitar. I remember seeing a washburn N4 i think it was, which had a neck cutaway to help give better access to the top frets. are there any guitars that are specifically good for this sort of thing?

It has to do with many things. Playing, fingering, left hand posture, neck thicknes etc... I can reach any fret on my Hamer with no problems. Of course, the deeper the cut the easier to reach.

Gibson SG & Flying V have perfect access to all frets, but they might not be what you are looking for.

The best I've tried is my Parker Deluxe, the access to high frets is awesome!

There are two shred guitars with an INSANE high fret neck access:

The Ibanez Egen (Herman Li Signature) and the Dean Rusty Cooley Signature 6 and 7string model.
Both guitars have an extensive cutaway and a deeply carved neck joint. Playing in the 24th fret is as easy as playing the 12th on these guitars...

IMHO you don't need that, with a bit of practicing you get comfortable with ANY neck even if it takes a time; I managed to play fluidly in the upper frets of my 50's neck Les Paul!

haha, i know what you're getting at, its not just the guitar thats stopping my reach, ive got stubby little fingers which doesnt help either. i was just wondering if there is any particular guitars that were beneficial in this area

I think it`s a matter of skills mostly smile.gif I remember when I had real difficulties to play on high frets, but now I don`t have any problems to play on 18-22 frets (22th is last on my Dinky JS30), tho I wouldn`t mind larger cutaway, it is pretty small, mostly guitars have larger space there.

Zakk, in Jackson Warrior is much more easyier to reach any fret than on those two signature models, I`m sure smile.gif

As everybody said, with some practice you can access any fret no problem.

If you still want easy access, try some 24 fret (or more) guitars. They usually have 12-17 fret more accessible.
