First of all, don't doubt my passion in metal (especially 80's), I breathe, bleed metal and I love Ozzy's works.
I understand his position in the metal world and he's the "godfather of heavy metal"

But at times I just couldn't help but think that he got famous because 1) he's a crazy ,
2) he got lucky with finding the most ridiculous guitarists on this planet: Rhoads, Lee, and then Wylde.
Like without those geniuses flying on their fretboards... I don't see how Ozzy can ever get famous?
Admit it, he is not the most competent vocalist... It took me awhile to get used to his singing at the beginning.

Excuse me if I sound ignorant.
I know I'm uneducated in Ozzy's history, hence why I am questioning.
I also know he published an autobiography, but I haven't read it.
If there's something from that book that would open my eyes, I'd gladly hear it!

Thank you so much!!

You guys are welcome to check out my Crazy Train solo cover in Slash costume smile.gif

He was the original singer for Black Sabbath. Iommi wasn't the most competent guitarist ever, but they did create the metal genre. Every single style of metal has a central riff that hearkens back to the original Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath. Even some of the crazier genres such as Black Metal.

Think about how the music scene was when this was released on February 13th, 1970. Think of groups like: The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, and Jimi Hendrix. Their music was pop/blues centered and even though some of it might have been heavy nobody had ever created anything as brilliantly dark as this:

Now you know how Ozzy got started. After this he could live on reputation. He chose instead, to bite the head off a bat, lick up other people's urine(Nikki Sixx) and even snort ants. When he departed from Black Sabbath he ventured and began playing with amazingly competent guitarists, such as the ones you listed. However, don't forget about his newest guitarist, Gus G. I am not a fan of his, but I have to admit that he is a great musician.

That is why Ozzy is famous. He literally carved the way for dark music and wild antics -- both on and off the stage.

BLACK SABBATH and many good solo albums have made him an icon from metal.

Another thing about Ozzy is that he is a great entertainer. I was lucky enough to see him live last year, and though I admit his voice isn't the best live he put up an amazing live show and sure knows how to entertain a crowd.
There are not that many guys who can do that, and the ones who can are usually famous biggrin.gif

Ozzy also owes a fair bit to good management and promotion by his wife Sharon (who is Don Arden's daughter - Don was the Black Sabbath manager). If I remember correctly it was Sharon who put together the band - and so recruited Randy Rhodes - for the first couple of Ozzy lps.

Yes, you are right. She co-ordinated his career from the ground up. She did a pretty amazing job too smile.gif

This. I'd also like to state that people enjoy going back to his solo albums because how different they all are. You got this straight forward in your face metal with Rhodes and Lee, then you got barbaric whiskey drinking jams from Zack Wylde and now you have an almost power metal sounding guitar in Gus G.

It's all a different experience with an bit of familiarity.

Yeah I think he's always been criticised on that subject but somehow he's made it work against the odds wink.gif
