Last Wednesday my hard drive crashed on my mac and due to me being a stubborn old dinosaur I didn't have anything backed up. I lost all photos and all my recordings. Moral of this story don't forget to back up your data.

I'm really sorry to hear this.

I had the same problem 2 years ago but I had the luck to recover everything from that hard drive. In my country we have some companies which recovers data from damaged hard drives.
So, I learned my lesson and periodically I make backups. Now I decided to try another thing which I think it's very useful, more comfortable and will save all the time that I usually spend doing backups.
I want to instal "Allway Sync". It's a very cool soft which every time when I save something on a hard drive he automatically make a backup on a different hard drive. If one of them will crash I will have all my things saved on the other one wink.gif I have friends which already use this soft and they are very satisfied.

Happened ish to me not too long ago as well. My computer crashed and just wouldn't start again. I tried EVERYTHING, but couldn't even get access to the hard drives from anywhere, so I decided to just format the whole thing, as suggested on the internet. I couldn't get to back up anything though, as I couldn't get access to my hard drives, even from another computer, it was very weird. But I considered it a fresh start in the end. I didn't have much of note on my HDD anyway, but I can imagine losing everything like that must be a pain in the butt.

I really should start backing up stuff as well.

Patrik, you may be able to retrieve those files, or try to at least. You can get a usb to sata cable (or a secondary HDD slot if it is a desktop model) and use a program like DiskWarrior to rebuild the structure if the drive still spins. DiskWarrior has saved a number of my old drives and recovered a faulty drive, even one with permanently bad sectors, just enough for me to gather what I could and save it elsewhere before ditching the drive.

And after all that hopefully restores your data ... do the 'time machine' backup for your Mac.
Even if you don't have it set for 'automatic' it will remind you every few days. It's very helpful.

Thank you for all your ideas, I will look into the "Allway sync" Monica, I have set up time machine and drop box and iCloud to automatically save my work files and I have two new external hard drives one for photos and one for my recordings. Thank you again guys for all your feedback and ideas. There is a company in Brisbane who specialise in data recovery but you have to pay between $2500-$3000 up front with no guarantee of any recovery so I just cut my losses, learnt my lesson and I am going to treat this as a new start and a reason to get creative recording again.

EGAD!! If it was a mac, it should have had iCloud installed by default right? Are you pix and such still up there in the cloud? If not, using Icoud and the free google drive and not so free dropbox are life savers. I use them all for different reasons actually. I have felt the pain of losing a drive with no backup. It's not something I'd care to repeat. sad.gif Sorry for your loss sad.gif

Todd

Well, don't put any compromising pix up there and you will be ok smile.gif I don't think anyone wants to blackmail you with your audio recordings? smile.gif

I use cloud too. I bought a sub to Office 365 which I know many will not like BUT the sub costs under £6 per month for 1Tb of storage. Cheaper than Dropbox but with Office 365 and free support.
As an aside, if you have Dropbox get Boxifier too. It makes life so simple wink.gif
