Hi everyone..

So, i have been practicing a lot these last couple of months, and of course the left hand fingers have a lot of hard skin (is it called that in english??)

Anyways, the hard skin on my fingers are beginning to "fall off".. not all at once, but it's tearing off slowly.
I am currently practicing hammer-ons and pull-offs, and pull-offs are very hard to do when the strings get between my fingertip and this hard skin that is somewhat falling off..

I cant rip it off because it will probably tear my whole fingertip off as well, and i need it to play my precious guitar.. I try to remove it a little at a time, but once it's gone, it will come back after 2 days.. it's especially bad after taking showers..

Well.. i cant be the only one having issues like this (i hope), so i was wondering if you guys have any tips, advice or hints to minimize the "flossing" of the fingertips.. Do i dip them in baby oil to keep them "whole", or is this "just the way it's supposed to be"?

Hope you can help,
-Zion-

I've had this since i started to play till now (more than a year ago) and it hurted sometimes a few months ago but now i can quite happily have a few layers of skin peeled off on my fingertips and not feel the difference. You could try any of the things you suggested but i'm sure you're fingers will toughen up soon. smile.gif

It used to happen to me- but don't worry it'll pass soon(ish).

Don't tear off the skin- that'd be silly..if you really want to try and moisturise your hands and make sure you're getting your fingertips in there too.

But honestly its not worth the bother- your fingers will become less likely to do it over time...many guitarists have some horrible looking skin on their fingertips.

It is normal for skin to regenerate. Actually your whole body (except brain) gets replaced after some years. Cells make new ones etc.. The only difference with that hardened skin is that you can actually see how it peals off in chunks instead microscopic leftovers.

The calluses on your fingers need to be toughend up, I myself at least make a point to make sure that my hands are completely dry when i play.

In my opinion don't play directly out of the shower, your skin is softer after being exposed to the water, wait for your hands to be completely dry.

My calluses don't peel at all really, they just stay firm and in place. If your calluses are peeling quite often maybe some altering the way you are playing is in order.

Make sure when you do hammer ons and pull offs that you are not over doing it movement wise. It should be a very subtle flicking motion, not a raking off of the string.

I realize that everyone is different but it sounds to me like you might be playing too aggressively.

Daniel

Try using some GHS Fast-Fret, it really helps.
And then it makes your strings last longer too.. laugh.gif

Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

hi Zion, when you practice very hard or maybe you wet them a lot and play!
its just normal, it happens to me when i study very hard
also depends on the stringthickness and how much bending you do!
i use 011-049 normal tuning and when i do alot of extreme bending
this can happen!
just wait it out!
i never put any oil or anything on my fingers!
cheers!
mats.

i've been playing for 3-4 years now and my fingers still look like they went through a chees shredder all the time and every once in a blue moon i have to use mosco pads becuase my fingers were hurting so bad when i got in the shower.
*I was going through a phase of wanting to be perfect dry.gif .....don't try it..it's really...frustrating..* laugh.gif lol but anyway just leave em' on their becuase i tried tearing them off once and it pulled some of the good skin off and it made it worse.
SO that's a big NO-NO! wink.gif ...Come to think of it i cut my fingernail too short on my index finger (left hand) and it hurts really bad when i play sad.gif ... rolleyes.gif but i just really love my precicous guitar rolleyes.gif

p.s. don't worry it happens to everyonem i believe. In a way it's a good thing so ur fingers will figure out exactly what u are doing w/ them laugh.gif
