Hi all,

I'm Art Culpepper and at 43 I am learning to play, again. I have to call myself a newbie because I don't play very well. I know a good bit of theory, but my skills are very rusty. I grew up listening to my father play acoustic (folk like Woody Guthrie and old country like Hank Williams). I learned some basic chords and to strum a bit from him, but didn't stick with it.

Years later, I learned a few power chords and made a lot of noise with my first electric. I just picked the guitar up a few weeks ago after literally years of not playing. I still remember a lot of what to do, but I have trouble actually doing it. I need to work on my speed and fluidity. My own tastes run from very melodic acoustic stuff to classic hard rock (like AC/DC, Aerosmith, and G n R), but I also really like punk. I find punk (Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.) the most fun to play.

I have two guitars, a Harmony with a humbucker and a Strat copy. I play them both with the same lack of skill.

cheers

Hey Art and welcome to GMC smile.gif

That's great that you're getting back into playing and decided to further yourself with it.

Are there any specific techniques which you'd like to improve at to help you ?

Punk ? AC/DC ?

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply. First, I've checked out some of your lessons, and you are an incredible musician.

Thanks for the suggestions; I had already checked out a few of Gab's lessons.

Since I'm so rusty, for now I'm working through Bear's beginner's lessons and mixing in a few of Gab's punk ones. I'm having a lot of fun with the Ramones-styled one.

Right now, that's what I'm comfortable with, but down the road a few weeks I'd very much like to join one of your classes. I may bug you with a few questions in the meantime.

I'm impressed with the whole set up here, and all of the instructors seem world class.

Finally, as far as specific skills are concerned, if you could recommend some exercises to help me build speed that would be great. I know running scales is one of the best things to do, and I am doing that daily. I'm not trying to be Malmsteen, but I want to be able to play up tempo much better than my current skill allows. I'd welcome anything that helps with either picking notes or making chord progressions more smoothly.

Thanks for all,
Art

That all sounds great smile.gif

For building up hand synchronisation and speed I don't recommend running through entire scales in a point A to point B and back again type fashion. I recommend choosing small licks designed to work alternate picking, although it will benefit you more if you pick maybe 2 or 3 that cover more than one motion.

For example, repeating licks on one string is good for simple out and out speed and synch.. but you'll also need to be able to cross strings too so covering both of these areas is good if you want a balanced technique. I tend to make up my own exercises to suit whatever I'm working on at the time but if you do a search for alternate picking you'll find tons of lessons here to choose from and just go for the ones that interest you most smile.gif
