Playing a small gig? Go for a 2 x 12. Big theater hall or outdoors? A full stack might be your answer. Plus you can get different sounds out of angle/straight cabs. They're a little more versatile and easier to transport than a full on combo (not saying the cab is any easier but combo vs. head, head is easier). It is better to have a head, so you can mix different kind of cabs in order to get different sound. Also the best option is to have a rack system with separate preamp/amp sections.
