Andrew,

as a thought would it be a good idea to perhaps separate out on the stickie - or separate it into two - the commercial (and often expensive) from the shareware/freeware daws, samplers, synths and so on? This way people would know from the start whether or not they would need deep pockets before investigating further smile.gif .

(OR as the Irish would have it: A scrouge like me with deep pockets but short arms can stick to looking only at the freeware laugh.gif )

Cheers,
Tony

Yes, a good idea indeed ! Drawing the line appropriately would be the hard part of course - Cubase is obvious, as is fish fillets and Audacity, but where does Reaper sit? Its commercial, but is insane value for money.

Maybe commercial isn't the best absolute guideline, we should base it on some notion of value for money?

Lets brainstorm a bit more then we can split the stickie up appropriately.

Hi Andrew,
Well Reaper officially is paid for shareware (rather than donation shareware or freeware). Regardless, to me it would sit towards the non-commercial end as for me commercial really entails full commercial cost recovery plus profit. The cost of Reaper presumably covers development cost and the web presence with little left over for profit. Given the actual market size for any daw I can't see there being that much profit once costs are taken out blink.gif .

More briefly - I'd place any shareware and freeware on one side and any full cost (including demos of such) on the other.

That though is my opinion.

Cheers,
Tony

Yes, my doubt over reaper was not that it is and should be paid for regardless of the fact that they don't force you to, but at $50 for something that gives Cubase Logic et al a run for their money it deserves a spot in the cheap and cheerful list, so I guess we agree on that one.

Ok, I'll split the stickie up and we'll see how it works out. I'm thinking "Full Featured Commercial" vs "Shareware, Freeware or Inexspensive" and I'l arbitrarily set $50 as the limit for inexpensive so Reaper slides under the bar smile.gif
