GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Winter Making Hands Sore !

Posted by: Ben Higgins Dec 10 2012, 06:20 PM

Hey Guys, time for another 'manly' thread ! wink.gif

Does anybody else get really sore hands and fingers in the cold weather ? Mine get quite bad and the skin even cracks and splits which is quite painful. What do you guys do about it if you get this too ?

Posted by: snackajacks Dec 10 2012, 09:32 PM

I have "winterhands" ( directly translated from Dutch )that means that if it gets cold outside, my veighns get tighter and my hands
swallow, this can also make more fluid in the knuckles of the fingers, I think somewhere is a picture on gmc of last year where I thought this was guitar related, Now this year I found out is was Winterhands but because I play guitar, the effects could be more dramatic.

But hey, We are men right biggrin.gif
Ill upload some pics if I got a cam to scare you guys biggrin.gif

Here is the topic of a year ago when the docter told me it was guitar and volleybal related and told me to calm down : http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=42350

I told this trick years ago when there was a "GMC ruined my hands" competition:

Use lotion for your hands. Ben, you have a girlfriend...chances are she is carrying around this stuff with her and uses it like once an hour.

Yes, that's all.

This last month here in AK has been extremely dry so I feel your pain Ben, not only with the hands but in dry itchy skin all around, I scratched my legs where my socks cover them so much they were raw, same problem with the hands getting so dry they crack and even bleed, not very condusive to guitar playing. sad.gif

Posted by: SirJamsalot Dec 11 2012, 02:26 AM

My hands don't hurt, but they sure do slow down!
There was a similar thread on another forum where they discussed wearing gloves when playing in cold weather. Sounds freakish I know. I thought about developing a 1/2 glove that only covers the backs of your fingers and hands, leaving the palm side of your hand open / exposed.

Would take some interesting material and something to adhere it with, and potentially painful to take off if you have a lot of hair on the back side of your hands, but hey! who knows!?!

Unfortunately, I have the same problem, Ben... I use a thing called Marigold/ Chanterelle creme - the little yellow flowers. They will help you!

Posted by: Ben Higgins Dec 11 2012, 12:06 PM

Well, actually.. I do use some Aloe Vera moisturiser that the GF has lying around.. I just... err... didn't want to be the first to admit it ph34r.gif

Jojoba oil, it's the closest oil to our natural oil our skin has, I use it as a moisturiser all the time.

My hands get all dry and sore when I've been handling cement for a couple of days. All I do is soak my hands in a basin of warm water. If I use moisturisers than my hands get too soft and are no good for rough, man-ish work type stuff!!

I never go out without gloves. It is quite helpful for me, never get cold hands or fingers.

Years ago, when I was working for the helicopter company, we did a lot of helicopter logging. Logging is seasonal in the North West United States, so the company found winter logging opportunities in the South logging in the swamps in places like South Carolina.
Our loggers were not used to working in the brackish water all day and complained about skin rashes. One of the loggers found out that his wife’s lotion (an inexpensive and somewhat fragrant lotion) worked good on the rashes. The next problem was leaches. Another logger found that his wife’s panty hose would keep the leaches from being able to attach to him.
So after that, every day a bus-load of loggers would stop at the local convenience store for lotion and panty hose before going to work in the woods. smile.gif

Gloves, God bless'em! Well, winter has hit Romania pretty hard already and last evening when I had to go downtown, I took my gloves along for the ride and I was darn happy about it when I realized what sort of a blizzard was going on outside.

The shoveling season has begun, unfortunately..

I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

MOUNTIES:
He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin'
And have buttered scones for tea.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.
He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing
And hang around in bars.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.
He likes to press wild flowers.
He puts on women's clothing
And hangs around in bars?!

He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

BARBER:
I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie,
Just like my dear Papa.

MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He wears high heels,
Suspendies, and a bra?!

[talking]
What's this? Wants to be a girlie?! Oh, My!
And I thought you were so rugged! Poofter!...

[singing]
He's a lumberjack, and he's okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

He's a lumberjack, and he's okaaaaay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

just stick your hands down the front of your trousers, that will keep your hands warm and you can quickly remove them should you need use of your hands........ or if someone is looking at you smile.gif

Well I know lots of burning stories from the kitchen and all of them are horrible mellow.gif

My fellow worker poured hot teriyaki sauce on her hand. When she realised what happened she couldn't get it off because teriyaki sauce is full of sugar and it just stays in your hand...and burns

But luckily I didn't burn my whole hand - only small parts, knuckles and near the nails. I'm able to play guitar though. wink.gif
