In my opinion he just plays a 16-note up-down stroke over the 4 high strings (and sometimes 5 or 6, he's not so picker-nickety...) What he does is to emphasize this rhytm: . 1 1 1111 1 1 1111 . with the point as bars, eg. two eight notes and 4 16-notes that repeats - but still the hand moves and he does it rather by muting the strings with the left hand (sorry, his right hand of course...)... hope this helps...... It's really some kinda funk-playing here.
//Staffay EDIT: He plays in A, even though it tunes Ab, and he probably uses the thumb for the low notes. Try a software like Amazing Slow Downer and listen to it at half speed, then You will figure it out for sure! (Amazing Slow Downer is free for trying out, but it plays just the first 30 seconds, but that will do in this case...) He plays the bass note with his thumb, and the rest up there, it's pretty hard with short fingers, but it's possible with practice. I learned to play this techniques by listening to "Here he comes" from South saturn Delta, now THAT is an awesome song (sounds similar to this).

Adrian has some great lessons for these groovy rhythm patterns. Maybe trying some of them will help you get the idea.
