Sounds good man! smile.gif

I'm trying to lay down a rhythm take but my kids are just not cooperating atm. I'll try to get something recorded soon.

Posted by: skennington Mar 6 2008, 05:06 PM

Hey Craig, Sorry for the delay man. Just having a hard time finding a good tone. The toneport has some good models for ac/dc but just not sounding good with my guitar. I took it to the shop for a Pro set-up and hope to have it back tomorow. I'm going to try and get something down tonight with my RX10 as it seems to sound a little better blink.gif Been playing my DK2M straight out of the box and I think it really needed a set-up. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 8 2008, 11:12 PM

Ok man, wanted to give you something to hear to see if i'm even close to the "Young" sound.
I've worked it out up to about the 2 min point and need to fix some mistakes but mainly wanted you to hear my tone at this point. Full rhythm upload soon!

Hi Steve smile.gif

Sorry for jumping in on your thread, just realised sumink ... you tune down right?? this backing I gave you is in standard tuning and I think Bondy is playing in standard too, thats why the bass sounds way out with your guitar.

good tone for the guitar smile.gif

Posted by: Bondy Mar 8 2008, 11:21 PM

yep iam playing standard tunning will download and have a listen

No probs man, your apart of this thread as much as I am. tongue.gif

I'm actually in standard tune. What do ya suggest. I'm using the H2H plug in gearbox.

Thanks Bondy. I'll record a take with your settings in a lttle while so you guys can hear. I imagine its getting kinda late over in the UK. Do you spring forward with daylight savings time tonight as well? I think you are 6 hrs ahead of my time.

Posted by: skennington Mar 13 2008, 02:48 AM

Hey man here's a take with your settings. Did'nt know what the base was set on so I left it at 5.
Still sounds muddy to me. I've worked through about 2 min of the song, still with issues but I'll get it.
Never thought it would give me this much trouble blink.gif And it's an ez one. You've prolly got the solo down already smile.gif

But thanks man, I've said it befor, this is forcing me to learn.

Hey guys, been playing around in reaper. Recorded this little piece to see if you guys think the sound quality is any better.

Clean track: EQ,lowpass filter and a little chorus.
lead track: just a little reverb tweaking
theres a third track in here as well. few chords recorded real low with no fx.

Also on the master:4b eq adjustment.

mind the playing tongue.gif just the sound laugh.gif

Chris, jump in here and give me your comments as well.

Posted by: Smells Mar 29 2008, 09:23 PM

quality doesnt sound too bad mate,

What is the input volume reading on the meter when your recording your guitars though?

Posted by: skennington Mar 29 2008, 09:34 PM

In gearbox the record send meters are fluctuating between -24 and -25 (green)

In reaper:

Master: -6-
Clean: -18-
lead : is just below -6-
track 3: -42-

all are just below the red line. I'm assuming that is the point where clipping occurs?

Posted by: Smells Mar 29 2008, 09:44 PM

QUOTE (skennington @ Mar 29 2008, 08:34 PM) *

thought that may be the case, you wanna reduce that some mate, I keep mine somewhere in the yellow on Reaper avoids that slight crackle sound you have on the clean guitar, give it a go smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Mar 29 2008, 09:59 PM

changed settings to where all meters are in yellow and then rendered again. See if this sounds any better. I've really got to get me some monitors. It's hard to tell with these cpu speakers and if I run through my amp then it's settings come into play.

Ahh I'am such a noob gonna need the solo without backing to add it to the rest of the recording
please Matt

Posted by: Matt23 Apr 2 2008, 06:27 PM

No problem heres the solo with out backing. smile.gif

Has everything been recorded for Highway to Hell now?

Not yet man. Is that the complete solo? It seemed to be a little longer the last time I heard it. but then again, that's been a while blink.gif

Posted by: Matt23 Apr 2 2008, 06:44 PM

It's whats on the gp tab. If you tell me what i'm playing wrong i'll record it again.

Posted by: skennington Apr 2 2008, 06:46 PM

At work at the moment man sorry. I'll have a listen when I get home this afternoon. You may be spot on. smile.gif

Posted by: Bondy Apr 2 2008, 06:52 PM

It fits in alright on the track only problem is it coming over dead quite and when i turn it up all the way it starts clipping gonna have to play around with reaper will get back to ya.Plus skenny whlie I'am thinking about it the backing track smells did for us is different from the original its not quite as long so where gonna have to improve here i think

Posted by: Smells Apr 2 2008, 07:35 PM

Eek sorry guys, want to see if I can get a longer backing for you? sorry didnt realise it was shorter sad.gif

Posted by: skennington Apr 2 2008, 07:47 PM

What do you think guys? Iprovise with this backing or get Smells to get the complete track?
either way is fine with me.

Posted by: Bondy Apr 2 2008, 07:49 PM

Just improvise with it we will just shorten the last solo get this in the can and start a new one thats my pennys worth

Posted by: skennington Apr 2 2008, 07:58 PM

I'm good with that plan

Posted by: Matt23 Apr 5 2008, 04:28 PM

I don't know the song highway to hell to well. What bit should I record?

Posted by: Bondy Apr 5 2008, 04:34 PM

Do whatever bits you feel comfortable with we will jointly choose the next song

Posted by: skennington Apr 5 2008, 04:37 PM

Yea Matt, work on what parts feel good to you. I'm working on it right now and have been for a while. Still not clicking for me yet! blink.gif

Posted by: skennington Apr 5 2008, 09:45 PM

What's up guys? Heres another attempt with a small part of the solo. Changed and ended it a little so we could improvise the shorter track. Still some mistakes blink.gif

Posted by: Bondy Jun 5 2008, 10:41 PM

Not sure whats happening at the moment think we should all get together and pick a new song as a band and take it from there what do you think Skenny

Posted by: skennington Jun 6 2008, 12:34 AM

I'm fine with that guys. Let's pick something fairly easy to get started like we did with H2H. Is Matt still in?

keep practicing Matt

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 02:54 PM

Not bad Matt. I would recommend also a little more vibrato as well. Great take man. Do you guys feel like the verse needs a little palm mute? I know the tab does'nt have it but just sound's like Richie is playing with a bit.

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 02:56 PM

the riff is played with palm mute and a couple of ph but you can get away with it if you want

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 03:15 PM

That's what I thought. Trying to work it out smile.gif

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 7 2008, 03:37 PM

Thanks guys for the comments. I'll listen to the actual song and not the gp tab and i'll upload again tonight. smile.gif

And perhaps as Nick says

QUOTE

we could assign different parts of the song to different people. Just think it's quite a good idea but i'm happy whatever. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 03:43 PM

I think we should assign parts. That way we can focus on a particular part and get this thing bagged fairly quickly.

Posted by: Nick325 Jun 7 2008, 03:53 PM

which tabs are we using?

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 03:57 PM

Nick, do you have gp? We are using Version 2 GP tab on UG

Posted by: Nick325 Jun 7 2008, 04:00 PM

ok thanks ill post something later when i got it down

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 7 2008, 04:17 PM

Thanks for the tab smile.gif ive been using the version1 and its quite different.

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 09:34 PM

Here's where I'm at so far.Got to work on a few more sections and get these tightened up. I think we should really assign parts.. smile.gif

 Skenn_Bad_Name_2.mp3 ( 3.75MB ) : 159

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 09:46 PM

I comfortable with any part will defo do the solo if you want

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 7 2008, 09:51 PM

Even though most parts of the song are easy it would be good to assign parts cos quite soon we will all probably be able to play the whole song, but if we assign parts we can all concentrate on individual bits and do them really well, finish this song quickly so we can do more, and its more of a band thing if we all add to the whole thing instead of us all posting the whole thing individually then mixing it as a band.
Still i am fine with whatever i think this would be good though.

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 10:00 PM

You kind of lost me there do you want to do individual parts or not i think it would be faster like you said then we can move on???

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 10:04 PM

Craig, you want the solo at the end and maybe the intro? Then we could split it up into verse and chorus. what are your thoughts guys?

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 10:06 PM

Well if you want i could do the solo and outtro iam good with that

Posted by: Nick325 Jun 7 2008, 10:10 PM

sure bondy can i do the intro soloy part

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 10:14 PM

That'll work man. Matt, you got a mic?
off suject but when you guys get a chance, have a listen to an original idea I had for an intro. It could go many different ways.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=attach&type=blogentry&id=7452

Play around with it if you like.

So who wants which verse and chorus? I've got the Intro and the chorus just about nailed so I could take those parts if you want.

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 7 2008, 10:21 PM

Ok i'll take a verse and a chorus, iv just about got those and no iv not got a mic sad.gif

Is that an idea for an original song? I like it smile.gif

Nick, I'll do the intro and work with Bondy on the vocals. ( I'm getting a mic so will see how I sound. tongue.gif ) You take the first verse and the first chorus. Matt, you take the 2nd verse and the 2nd chorus

Bondy will do the solo and outro, sound like a plan?

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 10:44 PM

Sounds sweet to me

Skenny forgot to say if you want the intro part to sound more like Richie Sambora use and octava only for the first solo part up until the first riff.

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 10:56 PM

Thanks man, I'll try that. These actives are tuff to tame!

Bondy, you talking about a Mic? In gearbox, I can only switch from axis, dynamic, or condersor. Been using the condensor.

Can I add it in the effects chain in reaper?

Posted by: Bondy Jun 7 2008, 11:00 PM

No Skenny he uses a Boss octave pedal to get that thick sound on the opening solo and the main solo which give it extra high octave overtones you should be able to get a octave pedal setting in gearbox look under effects. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: skennington Jun 7 2008, 11:33 PM

10-4. I'll try fooling around with the sub-octave box. Don't know if i'm going to get that thick tone out of these EMG's but i'll try. smile.gif

Posted by: Bondy Jun 8 2008, 01:03 PM

Liked it Bondy. Listening through studio monitors it kinda reminded me of a voice box, similar to the intro of living on a prayer.Might need to brighten it up just a bit. Might sound cool adding a little wah to it. smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jun 8 2008, 05:59 PM

Recorded this take with the 85. It has a little warmer tone. I'll try and add a little more mid. I actually took some out but the DAW hear's a little different than we do.

Nick, where you at bro? We want you in on this one. smile.gif

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 8 2008, 06:07 PM

Here's the 2nd verse and chorus. smile.gif I learnt the version 1 tab first by mistake and there's some bits in it i think sound better than the version2 tab, so mainly the bit leading up to the chorus is a bit different to the ver2 tab so if you want me to change it just say.

Yes Indeed man! I like that a bit better. One thing you might want to do is back off the prescence just a bit. Might eliminate some of the string slide. smile.gif If not, works for me. cool.gif We need to get Nick to work off of that tab as well so it will sound the same.

Posted by: Matt23 Jun 8 2008, 06:21 PM

Thanks for the comments guys, and Nick doesn't have to work off the other tab because this our cover of the song so we don't need to make it exactly like the original.

And skenny, is there any way i can put the presence down on reaper so i don't have to record again?

Posted by: Bondy Jun 8 2008, 06:42 PM

I have just put together what we have so far(please bear with me iam new to recording+mixing) to show how we are progressing i need the intro with no backing Skenny and we have the whole song

Matt, go into the EFX chain on that particular track. You want to add " VST ReaFir {FFT EQ+Dynamics}

Ok i messed around with ReaFir and this what ive come up with. It has got rid of quite a bit of sliding noise but it's changed the sound quite drastically and im not sure whether its better or worse so you can choose. smile.gif

Posted by: Bondy Jun 9 2008, 12:18 AM

Posted by: Bondy Jun 9 2008, 09:29 AM

Ok guys heres the first mix of the entire song apart from the vocal which i have tried to do with little success due to mic level problems and now my throat is hurting so if anyone else wants to give it a bash that would be cool i have also redone the solo due to smells completely destroying me yesterday with his allbut perfect rendition smug git LOL hope you like it i think it sounds much better

That's great. Good mixing and solo Bondy smile.gif

Posted by: skennington Jun 9 2008, 04:28 PM

Sounds good man! I would really like a stab at the vocals, working on getting a mic. I think we need a mix of vocals on this one for sure.

Posted by: Bondy Jun 9 2008, 04:41 PM

Thanks for the great comments guys skenny if you wanna do the vocals go right ahead i cant get my levels right sounds great while singing it the when i playback its much quieter to be honest iam plugging my mic through my korg i have to look at getting a lexicon or something like that

Posted by: skennington Jun 12 2008, 02:36 PM

Had a go at the vocals last night guys and I must say, I don't know if my range will support a quality vocal on this one. Jon's voice is great and it's going to be hard for me to put something down that sounds good. I'll have another go tonight and see what happens. smile.gif

Wht do you guys think about doing some ZZ for the next one? La Grange looks pretty easy. Heres a cool backing I found for it.

Thumbs up guys, I just heard your mix with vocals, it's cool! Nice job Bondy (Craig is it?)!!

Very nice, I had to do vocals for men in blues with another brick in the wall. I can say it's prety hard, and you nailed it Craig!

Thanks Kaznie means a lot that people liked it biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
