That's the chord progression of the song. The numbers to the left give you timing: 4 beats per measure in this case. Think of the progression as the rhythm guitar of the song. So in its simplest form, you'd strum Dm (D minor) four times, Bb four times, F four times, etc. The progression of the chords also gives you the keys the song is in at a particular time, which allows you to improvise with the correct scales.
Honestly, it'll all come to you as you practice the lessons (and read the theory forums!) Don't worry if it's hard at first. It really becomes simple over time. Use the lessons to improve your technical prowess and the theory will follow.
