I got asked to be in a grindcore band at school, and I don't really know much about the genre. What kind of guitar playing is in grindcore?

Generally extremely fast playing, tremolo picked riffs, dropped tunings. No polyphonics, basically no connection with the drummer or singer. Usually pretty short songs. No solos. No complexity, etc. Basically anything but creative. Correct me if I am wrong.

EDIT: Breakdowns every 30 seconds.

Well its very simple. Its deathmetal but kinda lamer. Tremelo picking.. with simple chord progressions at high speeds for the heavy. breakdowns can be anything really. id call parts of it shred because it can get quite complex but its rather simple.. I have a couple GP songs my friend wrote that r grindcore. Example of grindcore riff... tempo 175.. Sixteenth notes... 0 6 5 3 5 3 1 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0... on the low e string.. tuned down 1 step.. thats the verse riff.. i can't really describe it any better.. than fast. noise...

Throw in some pig squeels and you're there.

BREEE BREEE.

Distinct lack of melody and creativity but if you get it right it's damn heavy.

Grindcore bands of note:

Napalm Death, Mumakil, Waking the Cadaver...

Generally the lyrics are about mutilation, sexual domination and gore. Like extremely fast Cannibal Corpse its not altogether pleasant and I think they're generally rather sheddy.

And early Carcass. I like a lot of grindcore but early stuff like Napalm Death - Scum and Carcass - Reek of Putrefaction

Yeah, thanks everybody for the help. Its not really my favorite kind of music either. Sounds like Death Metal without the talent.

Pretty much sums it up...Thats why I we have the word "core" in music. Basically, no core= talent, all "core" except maybe "mathcore"= no talent. You can't be metal without having blazing, virtuosic solos, that is just a distinct part of the genre, until then, let's just leave it at "core."

I heavily disagree with most of these comments I'm afraid. I certainly wouldn't say grindcore is among my favourite of genres, in fact I very rarely listen to it but I will defend it in saying that its not all about violence and simplicity.
There are some extremely serious grindcore bands who play intensely complex music. Check out for instance my friends band Reth who play some of the most creative and diverse grindcore I've ever heard. Other great grind bands are Cephalic Carnage, Narcosis, Tangaroa, and Executive Distraction Tasks.
To play this style well (ie not in the style of bands such as Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer etc), my advice would be a lot of metronome practice, and just listen to as much music by the bands I mentioned as possible.

Hope that helps
David

Shame Narcosis split up sad.gif and Cephalic Carnage are awesome. And Napalm Death's first album is great Grindcore as that is pretty much where the genre started. Lee Dorian left to start Cathedral though and I much prefer Cathedral.

But some good bands you've suggested and Grindcore can have some very technical sections.

Yeah it was a real shame. My band had a show with them the week they split, but they broke up a few days before the gig and pulled out. sad.gif
