GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ New Instructor - Marcus Siepen
Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Mar 5 2008, 05:35 PM
Hi there,
It's a great honour for me to present Marcus Siepen from German metal band Blind Guardian as an instructor at GMC!
Marcus discovered GMC some weeks ago more or less by accident. He was blown away by GMC and our instructors and immediately signed up for an account. Here is what he says in http://marcussiepen.blogspot.com/:
QUOTE
Some weeks ago I discovered the site of Guitarmasterclass , an awesome webpage with tons of great lessons for guitarists. The lessons come in form of videos, with tabs and whatever else you might need to follow them and the variety is endless, from very simple things for beginners up to stuff that most likely I will only be able to play after 15 years of daily practice (and with some of the lessons I am not sure if those 15 years would be enough for me ;-) ) I immediately loved the idea, putting lessons from all kinds of teachers online in one webpage is just great and I thought it would be a great chance for me to also restart giving guitar lessons, and guess what, today I was accepted as a new teacher for GMC :-) So whoever is interested in learning new things, check out this page, there are awesome lessons online already and soon there will also be my first lessons.
Marcus quickly spotted topics which were lacking at GMC so - so stay tuned for his first lesson!
On a personal note I am very happy Marcus found his way - because I no longer had any excuse not to dive into Blind Guardian's music. I am currently listening to "A Twist in the Myth" and I am blown away by the tight guitars and atmospheric songs! Best part is - I have a total of 11 (!!) albums to check out!
So be sure to check out the http://www.blind-guardian.com/ - as well as http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=Search&CODE=show&searchid=333c0e23c89ee3100d72ca167663186b&search_in=titles&result_type=topics&highlite=Blind+Guardian.
Welcome to GMC Marcus!

God... 5 pages of welcoming me??? You guys are nuts :-) Well, all I can say is that I feel honored to be a part of the GMC family, when I discovered this site I was blown away and joined immediately... as a student! There are so many awesome lessons here, from a whole lot of incredible teachers, there is so much to learn, so much I can improve and add to my playing, I just loved it. And actually the abilities of some of the other instructors almost prevented me from contacting Kristofer and asking if I could join as an instructor myself, some of those guys are so incredibly good, so much better than I am as a guitarist, I was pretty intimidated for a while But well, I will do my best to give you some good lessons and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I enjoy the lessons from the other guys here.

Hi Marcus,
I have to admit something here and don't shoot me for this... but I have never heard your music before Anyway, I'll buy one of your CD's and listen to it. What would be your favorite one for me to get if you had to pick?
thanks!

@ Rethla: Wow, it is great to hear that Andre and me inspired you to pick up an instrument, I hope you will have a lot of fun playing guitar and don't worry about being an absolute beginner, all of us started like this
@ Jeff: No problem, you don't have to know Blind Guardian and you also don't have to like my band, everybody likes something different. But if you want to check out Blind Guardian I would recommend you go for either "Live", a double live cd, or our live dvd "Imaginations through the looking glass", both will give you a pretty good overview about what we are doing. If you are not into live stuff get Imaginations from the other side.
@ Maria: Haha, you have been spying on my lesson :-) As Angelica said, this is the privilege of being an admin :-)

Welcome Marcus, its funny, i first found out about BG on this very site, but i was back a good 9 months now i think. I think your music is great, but this also opens up opportunities for GMC. It allows for your bands songs to be learned, which is a big plus, and it also may attract other professional famous guitarists to the site
Im really looking forward to some of your lessons, but, please, buy an ibanez
Edit: By the way, when's the next tour happening, and is there any chance at all of you coming to Scotland.
And when i say Scotland, i mean Edinburgh, not Glasgow, becuase they get all the good gigs...

Good question, I would pick Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi, Dio has always been my fave singer and Iommi was my biggest influence when I started to play guitar, so it was pretty special to meet them.

Hello Marcus! Welcome to GMC! I'm very glad that you are doing lessons here. I still remember when I listened "Imaginations... for the first time in my walkman and it blow my mind. It would be awesome if you do lessons telling how do you work at the studio and also how you work your guitar arrangements and duets.
I saw Blind Guardian in Argentina during the "Nightfall in the midle-earth" tour and I was surprised of the presicion of the whole band.
It's a pleassure to have you here.

But i've noticed that on your album "Live", and your Live DVD, and when i saw you guys live, the crowd tends to sing the chorus valhalla for quite some time, The show i was at did it for a good 5 minutes
Whats the longest anyone has ever done it a show, Do you guys leave time in the show for it?

I guess Valhalla was "abused" the most at the Blind Guardian Open air (the one where we recorded the DVD), the crowd kept singing the chorus for several minutes after the song ended, and they restarted it after a couple of other songs as well. But the most impressive thing actually happened after The Bard Song at a show that we played in Düsseldorf on the Night at the Opera tour. The crowd kept cheering so loud that we could not continue the show for about 15 (!!!) minutes, whenever Hansi tried to anounce the next song the audence went even more nuts... I still get goosebumps when I think of that night, pure magic. But no, we don't count on such things to happen, we plan our setlists independent of such things

Sounds incredible, Would of loved to have been at the show!
15 minutes, Wow thats a lot!

It's a pleassure to have you here.
gabriel.-
Hey Gabriel, that Show was pure magic, the whole South American trip that we did back then was incredible. We were really sorry that we had to cancel the show in Buenos Aires last year because of that damn problem at the airport but we will come back for sure. About future lesson topics, I am just preparing my second one and I already talked to Kristofer about BG-lessons, we will see what is possible, would be fun for me for sure.

You wont beleive how im blown away by the fact that Marcus has joined GMC (im sure you guys are too). I dont know if its coincidence either because about 2 weeks ago i took this online quiz on "which type of metal are you?". End result- It said i should listen to the power metal band Blind Guardian. I had already heard Mirror Mirror, but after that, Ive been listening to even more of guardians song.
Im just wondering, what other bands influenced you guys? You seem to have very distinct music. Also could you teach us how you do those awesome speed metal riffs?
I guess youre never too old to skateboard.
Imagine how Pavel reacts when he finds out Marcus joined GMC!

... yeah, I also almost died with that f..... skateboard...
About my influences, Bands like Black Sabbath, early Iron Maiden, Queen, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy and Rainbow were all very important for me, to name a few at least.

Wow, that is some really good news.
I love Blind Guardian, the Blind Guardian festival in Coburg(2003) was awesome.
Thank you for this Marcus, it was the best Blind Guardian show I have ever seen.
btw, I've chosen my nickname by one of your songs
best regards,
Skalde

That sounds great Marcus!
If I'm not wrong you ere planing to play in Obras (Pepsi Music) that is a bigger place than the first time. I know that you'll have great time if you play in Obras in front of more than 5000 argentinians shouting the choruses...
Posted by: Marcus Siepen Mar 12 2008, 10:59 PM
Yeah, it would for sure have been great, but then we got stuck for 12 hours at this damn airport and couldn't do the show anymore

Also, I have a question for Marcus.
Me and a friend were watching the Blind Guardian DVD a while back and we noticed you were playing this one gutiar and we argued about it for a while, do you have a Les Paul with a Floyd Rose trem? I mean I'm no gear guru but, I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a Les Paul with a floating trem. The guitar I'm talking about is the one on Another Holy War.
Hope it's not a bother to answer all the questions from the Guardian fanboys
Next we gotta get Andre Olbrich on here

Hmm, I have to admit I don't exactly remember who had the idea to cover Mr Sandman, I think it was Hansi, but we all like to mess around with such songs, as we did with Barbara Ann or Sufin USA. And about that guitar on our DVD, this is a cusom built ESP, obviously based on a Les Paul, but with a Floyd Rose, it is from my times as an ESP endorser. It is a good guitar and I still have it, but I am not really using it anymore, I prefer my Gibsons.

Is your ESP Eclipse a "typical" Eclipse with a thinner body (in comparison with your Gibson Les Pauls) or is it a "Full Thickness"
Posted by: Marcus Siepen Mar 30 2008, 02:01 PM
No, it is a bit thinner compared to my Gibsons, though it is also no regular "stock" Eclipse.

Woa dude! Been away a while and what do I read when I come back?
Welcome Marcus, I grew up loving your music.
Had to give away my ticket to your 07 Düsseldorf show due to army service
Looking forward to all of your lessons!

Another good reason not to serve in the army

Fortunately I'm too unfit for the army lol. I haven't seen Blind Guardian as you don't seem to like us in the UK
Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Apr 1 2008, 01:54 PM
I couldn't get to your Koko gig in London. I saw Testament and also Stratovarius and Hammerfall there. I really like the venue. Any chance of you playing Nottingham Rock City? I live right by it
