I am finding this stretch quite tricky. Im used to handleing whole steps and beyond with pinky, ring and index (no middle finger). But I know the original author of this peice of music uses pinky , middle and index.

My question to more advanced players, how would you handle this stretch? smile.gif If I use pinky middle index my index finger slips off the D# onto the E note everytime!

Hope that makes sense smile.gif

For those dim7 shapes I guess PMI is the most reasonable solution. smile.gif

Like Muris I naturally err towards pinky, middle, index but I also tried pinky, ring, index and for a laugh pinky, ring, middle (ouch).

What I did notice Matt is for the PMI I moved my thumb quite a long way over towards the top E string from where it normally sits near the middle of the neck. For the other two I actually wasn't using my thumb on the neck at all but had brought it all the way round to the same side and it was no longer touching. I just found that this movement allowed me a little more stretch. I don't really use my thumb though to put pressure on the neck for notes, it's usually only there for position.

PMI for me. For stretches like these and beyond such as the diminished shapes I tend to slant my hand a little to a position that looks similar to thumb round the neck/bend/vibrato position rather than the classical, fingers-parallel-to-the-frets position but I still have my thumb on the back of the neck. Also, if this stretch is a little tricky try it further up the neck until it's comfortable and then gradually go down by one fret a day or something..

Just remembered something else that helps me with stretches:
1) those petrucci warm up stretches from his Rock Discipline DVD, especially the whole note between each finger one
2) take each finger in turn and do hammer-on, pull-offs in increments. So start at say 9th fret, index finger and hammer-on/pull-off with the middle finger to 10th then 11th then 12th then 13th then etc..., then do the same between middle and ring and then again with ring and pinky. Gradually the distance you can stretch increases.
3) Play the end of Paul Gilbert's Scarified

Hm, i have long fingers and both, PMI or PRI is ok. Somehow PRI is more comfortable as i have to turn my left hand lesser and keep it parallel to the neck.

I would use index ring pinky there, just the way I got used to playing.

Your thumb should be resting right in the middle of the back of your neck for this kind of exercise. That will give you more stability...

I think both are good possibilities. To me the fingering depends on what's next, maybe if I have to use rightaway the ring finger I'll use PMI but if I have to use middle finger I'll use the other combination.
I've transcribed some exercises that I used to practice to improve the really really wide stretches.

The left hand fingering on the first exercise is finger 2 (middle), finger 3 (ring) and finger 4 (pinky)
The fingering for the second exercise is finger 1 (index), finger 2 or 3 (middle or ring) and finger 4 (pinky). I used to do this one 1 2 4 and I left out the equation the ring finger.

I hope this helps smile.gif

Technical Difficulties, right? wink.gif (No pun intended)

I use PRI, just because it feels more comfy to me, and because I also get into the same trouble as you if I go PMI.

Guys,

Thanks for each of your inputs its very valuable input so thankyou smile.gif

The thing is, I have built im my enitre technique using the P R I as I have always found it far more comfortable and its always made more sense to me personally. When handleing long stretches on the lower frets I would use same P R I whole step shapes so it feels kinda odd to swap over! smile.gif

Thanks david, Im glad to know Im not the only person using this combination smile.gif

What I find with this particlar Dim shape is If I were to use P M I my hand has to move in order to fit the stretch.

Although I don't consider myself an advanced player, here's my €0,02 :

PMI seems to do it, but PRI doesn't seem too bad. Try what's most comfortable for yourself.
Have you considerd tapping ? Because to me it seems like a typical tapping arpeggio.

Anyway, I think you should it the way it sounds and feels best to you.

Pinky, middle and index for me too. I think it's just a matter of practice and maybe the angle of your fretting hand. I haven't read through the post, but I believe someone will have pointed that out before me smile.gif

Yes I am thinking its more to do with the angle of the hand more than anything now. I practiced this morning with my hand at an angle and it seemed alot easier! smile.gif
