Like Pavel I use Reason for some of my bass. Other bits I record it as guitar and then use Melodyne to pitch shift the notes down - also helps with small timing inaccuracies without necessarily becoming to robotic.
(Don't have Trilogy but if it's as good as Spectrasonic's Atmosphere and Stylus it would be a great bass Muris!) Links btw way are as follows (these are commercial software rather than free/share ware though):
Reason - great piece of software - a virtual studio rack that includes instruments (ie synths, samplers and drum machines) and effects and a mixing desk. Melodyne - amazing software for pitch, time and formant corrections - make a guitar into a bass, or a sax. So good it can even make my singing musical (well nearly ). Spectrasonics - Stylus, Atmosphere, Trilogy wonderful vst instruments. AMazing sounds and quality and wonderful grooves. Broomstick bass from bournemark - not too expensive and has a huge range of stringed and keyboard basses, and also an auto mode if you can't be bothered to write the bass line yourself.
Occasionally I use samples from the Kontact 2 Library. BTW, Melodyne is a superb piece of software as tTony says! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

I use a real Mexican fender Bass. I am thinking about selling it and buy a Line6 bass though. I need to try it first however. My thought is that achieving good bass sound should be easier with Line6 for a bass-novice like me! I have one and they rock -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Awesome - so you have both The line6 guitar and bass? Does the bass allow you to plug directly in the computer without anything in between - with good results? I have the Variax Electric, the Variax Nylon Acoustic and the Variiax 5 String Bass .... They all act just the same as a regular instrument in that you can plug a regular jack into whatever you need to , and with the built in modelling, the results would be the same as plugging a regular bass into your PC. They all need power of course, but you can either use batteries, or Line6 provide a breakout box with each intrument that lets you power it and take an output to whatever you need to. In the case of bass in general (and line6 basses are no different), just as with guitar, results are helped by some form of amp and cab modelling. I use the bass expansion pack on my pod for this. I haven;t done an awful lot of bass recording, because 9 times out of 10 its easier to sequence a backing track, but for those really special songs that you want to do an awesome job of I would play real bass. I have had good results withh the Line6 + modelling, and I would recomend the bass for its huge versatility, and it is a well put together instrument. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

For those who want a vst software bass amp modeller the IKMultiedia Ampeg SVX is wonderful - but not I'm afraid free IK Multimedia.
IK also do some great amp simulation (Amplitube and the freeware amplitube uno) and vst effects/mastering effects. They also do the Miroslav orchestral samples that I think Pavel or Muris recommended (I'm a fan of Vienna Sound Library even if I can't afford the amazing and amazingly expensive VSL CUbe ). Thanks! The reason I am asking is because I am a novice at compressor and effect sentings for bass - so I would just need a good, "working" sound. Definately sounds like this could be it! Also - I would want to use it for metal, rock, bluesy stuff - so I imagine a variax is required for that kind of versatility... Yes, I am a bass novice too - compression would be the most important IMO, and you have that in your DAW, so it should be possible to get a good tight bass sound if you record direct even without emulation. The Variax definately has the versatility you need, everything from double bass to funk and in between. The biggest difference is between the flatwound and round wound strings, I didn't appreciate the difference before I had the Variax, as it emulates both. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Not ideal but might give you guys a starter for setting up a compressor for bass if you need it - Alessis pdf for compression
Cheers, Tony ANd an explanation of the various controls/settings... compression Personally (experiemtn this is just what I like to start with) I'd start with a 4:1 ratio, 25ms attack (fast) and medium/slow 100-450ms release time. If you add too much compression at the higher frequencies the picking gets mushy/blurred. Pleasure Muris. Cheers, Tony If anyone is interested, in how I got the bass sound in my collaboration track, read on ... Frank had an Alembic bass, and I DIed it to the interface to get an unaffected clean sound. When I was mnixing it I used the Line6 Gearbox plugin set on the 1967 Silverface bass for AMP & Cab modelling, then EQed and compressed it. I'm still trying to get the hang of real bass mixing, but I think this one turned out reasonably well. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
