GMC Forum _ Theory (Muris) _ Little Help Please

Posted by: UncleSkillet Jan 29 2008, 03:31 AM

So, I have been working with this backing track (Joe Satriani “Just Look Up” from the album “Is There Love In Space”. http://guitarplanet.free.fr/backingtracks.htm). Good progress for me. I am working on my improve skills and trying to write my own solo over this easy rhythm (have never heard the original recording though. Refuse to till I am done with my version.). Figured out (by ear and all the new theory I have learned here) that jamming in E Major Pentatonic, Em Blues Pentatonic works really well. However, I am a lot more comfortable doing fast licks with 3 finger shapes. I was thinking about trying E Mixolydian and working that in to make things more intense and interesting (better 3 fingered options). What do you think? Am I on the right track, or would you suggest something different?

I'm not familiar with the tune you're asking,
stopped to follow Satch's work after Crystal Planet or som,I'm getting old sad.gif

First of all, don't be prisoner of E keys only, expand it to other keys as well, easier first.
Like A,D,G,B etc.
And then add couple more scales to your vocabulary.
Mixolydian is surely one from the list, then Dorian,Lydian,on and on. smile.gif

Thanks for the advise man, and I will do that.

Sorry my link was bad. If you get a minute, here is the good link.

I know your busy Muris, but would you mind at some point listening to it and maybe jam over the top with your new KILLER RIG (sounds great and congrats), then let me know what you think.

I will post a recording of my play for you once I get it finished. I just need to find a way to record my Flextone III Pus(Line6) amp through my PC. Any thoughts on that? Need to find a XLR to 3.5" adapter I think to plug it into the linein of my onboard sound card. A mic would be more expensive and harder to get the tone right. Then I could use "Movie Maker" or some other free software for now to record.

Thanks and sorry for the long reply

OK, after a thought or 2 I am thinking D lydian would work good for some Legato runs and piece it back with the Penatonic.

To be sure which scales to use you have to know root and chord progression. smile.gif
I just listen to the backing,it's obviously in key of E cause progression is
A,E,A,E etc then F#m,B,F#m,A,B.
so you can use E major scale and everything inside,
triads,E major pentatonic etc.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else.
And be sure to check out Andrew's theory lessons as well. smile.gif

You're welcome but I think it's E Ionian(major),not Aeolian(minor). smile.gif

Ask if you need anything else. wink.gif
