GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ New Gmc Video Chat!

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 24 2012, 01:39 PM

You might have noticed that since a few days we have upgraded the GMC chat!

We have added 2 way video chat, which we feel is a very important feature. It allows you to get direct feedback on your playing, in public or in private. It will also open up for various interesting interactive activities. Bogdan will soon post details on how this is done, but basically you need to click the http://content.screencast.com/users/kristofer7/folders/Jing/media/cd395bc2-47ea-413c-9594-c0f353ae8879/00000270.png.

We have also solved the following chat related problems:

* copy and paste is now possible
* you can now use the text chat from your smartphone
* we have added a countdown, to make it easier to understand the video chat session schedule
* it used to be difficult to follow a quick discussion, but you can now click "Open chat room in new window" and get a rezisable window

Check the new chat out http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/chat.

As usual we are very grateful for your general feedback and/or bug reports.

Hi guys - here are some details on how to use some of the chat new features :

How to start my video broadcast in the new chat?

1. Click on the "Publish My Video" icon here : http://screencast.com/t/wJuo5jlQmpFF
2. Allow the chat to access your camera and mic by clicking "Allow" here : http://screencast.com/t/mXSoYqUigieV
3. Enable your audio to allow others to hear you by clicking here : http://screencast.com/t/4r7S1bUHK4T

How to watch other students video in the chat?

To watch other students video in the chat, you need to click on the small webcam icon next to their name in the users list on the right, like this : http://screencast.com/t/B8Sv40c0A

Advanced options for audio setup :

1. If you wish to select a different audio source then your (Webcam) microphone, right click on your video window and go to "settings".
2. Click on the "Mic" setup tab and choose an audio source you wish to use from the drop down menu : http://screencast.com/t/PAXmmhv8N

Tips :

For best results we would recommend keeping your computer speakers on low volume or using headphones as that reduces the audio feedback. If you are watching several videos like instructor broadcast and student videos at the same time, we would suggest muting audio in other video sources and enabling it only on the 1 source that you are currently following, for example a student playing a solo, instructor explaining an exercise etc.

Muting of student audio (or adjusting its volume) can be done by clicking on this icon when hovering over their video window : http://screencast.com/t/p4Wf80PsM

Muting instructor audio (or adjusting its volume) can be done like this : http://screencast.com/t/GrOCYkle

The "New & Improved" Video Chat is awesome! Thanks Bogdan & Kris. Video chat was fun & informative before but wow, now it's even better! smile.gif

Totally agree with Gary, biggest improvement ever biggrin.gif

The only downside is that now we all have to wear pants during the chat and have to clean up our room first laugh.gif

Seriously, that was a great idea Kris and Bogdan.

Exactly, I had to make my bed before the chat started! laugh.gif

I could shrink the video windows & see everyone who had their cameras on. Very cool feature! It is really great seeing the others playing the exercise. I'm sure the instructors are REALLY going to appreciate this feature.

Now I just have to get over the "stage fright" when I'm "on"! huh.gif

Loving the new features guys great job! biggrin.gif One thing that would be nice though is if we could drag a students video window out of the chat window, off to the side and out of the way of seeing parts of the chat. Is this possible?

Unfortunately - it is not possible to take the video window out of the chat widget, but what I would recommend it to use this feature : http://screencast.com/t/tMK53m3Ceg

It opens up the chat room in a new window (pop-up) and you can easily move it around, resize to any dimension.
That way it is easier to fit in more video windows if needed and still follow the chat.

Posted by: AK Rich Nov 27 2012, 01:31 AM

Ah I saw that and will have to try it , Thanks Bogdan! smile.gif

Hi Bas I moved your post to this thread.

Are you seeing that screenshot when you enter the chat? (or is it after you have clicked around)

Have you tried logging in/out? Restart browser? Clear your cache?

Any more details you can give us that will help us recreate this problem is appreciated! (we want to see you keep rocking that video chat asap wink.gif )

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 29 2012, 10:00 AM

Ok Bas this should now work for you - the problem was on our end. It seems you accidentally got kicked out, my apologies for this.

The new V-Chat seems to be very popular and succesfull but I was noticing a few of the guys have been having issues with routing their audio when using plugins/software for their tone as I have been trying to help guys test and get setup so they can stream,so on behalf of those guys I thought I would bring it up here.
I first noticed it when Christian was streaming vid and his sound was a totally clean tone, although he was hearing the tone from his plugin on his end.
GregC was having problems getting it to work with plugins as well altho he did get it to work by letting his PC or webcam mic pick up the sound from his speakers but couldnt get it to work direct from his soundcard.
Hungry for Heaven seemed to be having the same issue and couldn't seem to get any sound at all to come through.
I have my tone processed before it goes into my PC so I havent had any problems other than when I had my DAW open ,then I too had no audio in my broadcast. I thought I would see if I could get a backing to come thru and play along with it in my broadcast was the reason I had my DAW running.
If anyone has any ideas for a workaround or a way to route their audio so that it can come thru using their plugins/software/DAW I am sure those guys would be gratefull. smile.gif

Very good point and feedback!
Unfortunately - there is no easy workaround for this as the issue doesn't really lie in any software used for chatting rather in the sound card itself.

To be able to accomplish this - the sound card has to have very good audio signal routing capabilities. Basically, it needs to have a versatile internal mixer software that will allow you to mix for example sound from daw, your guitar, mic and send it to one specific input channel - all mixed together. Then its just a matter of selecting that input in the video chat, skype anywhere.

I have sold my m-audio audiophile 192 sound card because of this as even though its a good card, it wasn't very versatile with this kind of thing (you just couldn't do it). Unfortunately, POD studio interfaces also have this issue with routing (you are just way to limited to do it).

I heard that EMU cards have good routing as well as RME. Not sure about the others, anyone has any advise?

I might be able to help here smile.gif I"m doing exactly that. I"m using OVERLOUD plugins for guitar and going from my DAW to the computer, then chat so its.

GUITAR > INTERFACE > USB to COMPUTER >

*SECONDARY OUTPUT > INTERFACE RCA/1-8th inch adapter in to sound card on computer.

This way your processed audio goes in to your sound card. smile.gif

IMPORTANT: You must use headphones when doing things and monitor the headphone out of your INTERFACE only. You have to MUTE the output of your PC audio or you will get echo looping.

Just want to make sure I understand this ,Secondary output = you are taking the output from your computer such as a headphone jack for example and routing it back thru your interface and into your computer again thru the line in for example on your soundcard?
Muting the output of your computer audio doesn't kill the signal going back thru the interface and into your computer?
I may be confused here rolleyes.gif

for Mac users, they can use Soundflower, which creates virtual input/outputs from programs. So I can use the output of my DAW straight to the audio input of the webcam or whatever.

Theres a similar program on windows called 'Virtual Audio Cable', theres a free trial for it that'll work I guess.

OK i just wanna say how i do it !

imac and OSX

Vchat

video with i face -- on board camera

sound or voice -- over Zoom G3 as line in (USB Interface) in Sytemsettings by using Garageband where you could integrate
any software for example Amplitude

output for myself at home my or any speaker system

so one sound direct to chat and one separate at home no echo prob.

Soon i get a mic too and this over Zoom G3 for conversation should work too , will see.

Zoom G3 on window i got no experience but would be interesting too .

I thought he meant the secondary out put from the interface. I might be confused as well. I had problems in vchat today. I selected my interface for the sound source but no one could hear me. If I use headphones from my interface, and run a cord from the rca out of the interface to the mic in on the computer, then select the mic as my input will that solve the problem?

Hm, that didn't work for me...on my Android, I can access the chatroom and have to touch the display to activate the plugin for video and chatwindow. The video works, but the chat window never shows up/loads when I push on "activate plugin". I updated my Flash, but it didn't work. I don't even get an error message.
Any other Android users having trouble with this?

It's no big deal if it doesn't work though.

Aha - thanks for info! smile.gif You were supposed to see a text chat in full screen and not the video window.
Are you saying you do see the video broadcast from instructor, going live?

Please let me know which phone is it and which version of android (you should be able to see it in the settings)?

Hi Bogdan,

I've got an HTC One V, Android Version 4.0.3.

Yes, I can see the video broadcast going live, but the chat window goes completely white. I tried open it in a new window, but with the same effect: the screen was all white, nothing happened. Just tried it at home via Wi-Fi to see if it was a bandwith problem, but it also didn't work.

The "Open chat in new window" is a great feature so I can see the video & audio feeds of multiple fellow members. The new chat is absolutely fantastic!

I know some are disappointed in the lag time from the instructors but when you think about what we are doing live from all around the world, it is really amazing. The chat is a great feature of GMC & just keeps getting better! Great job Bogdan & team! Thank you! smile.gif
