hey everyone

i have a question regarding bends; i can bend the string to the proper pitch, thats covered. the problem lies with somehow hitting unneeded strings. When i go do a bend the string above the one im bending is either pushed up with it or it manages to go ontop of my bending fingers and when i release the bend it snaps back to the fretboard making obnoxious noise. what is the proper way to bend?

You can't keep your fingers away from the other strings when you are bending. You have to try not to pick any unwanted strings and mute all strings but the one you are bending.

All that noise will go away with proper muting and more experience as you practice,
you'll get that "feel" how to bend without noise, work on, no worries.

There's a few ways to mute this, but a really aggressive bend is going to run the risk of causing that need for muting as you say.

One example, if you have time to mute this way, can be found in Piotr's quite-popular "Guitar Loves Piano" lesson and perhaps some beginner lessons if you search for bend and watch both of the instructors' hands.

I personally mute with either free "bar" finger (index or ring) or with the right hand's knife edge. I don't always get it right, but it seems like the right approach.

As Muris said, with proper muting techniques you will learn to maintain noise-free execution. Try to keep the fingers behind the bended note muting the strings above, just touching them slightly, or try to keep the palm of the picking hand on those strings. The muting will come in time, just focus on it while practicing.

That is something that goes with experience, you have better feel for that, not hitting the string. That will come!
