Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

*Here is a quick vid I did as an example of what I"m looking for in your Mission Video, Soldier! One pass of single picking, one pass of double picking, make sure I can see your picking hand and fretting hand, and using a simple beat locked in to each pick strike. Here it is Soldier!!!

And here is the DRUM TRACK!!!! Use this one to keep it simple!
 140BPM.mp3 ( 475.43K ) : 116

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is your link your personal training ground/HELL!

Hey, Todd! : )

I just uploaded the video of the first mission.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmaP_qUTR_o&feature=youtu.be

But I'm a bit confused. It seems like I recorded a different task. Have you reedited your post?
I'll record the second one as well.

Thats the right one Soldier! smile.gif I had recorded another vid to show another Soldier a bit of a close up. In the vid above, I"m doing SINGLE PICKING and then DOUBLE PICKING whereas the Tablature is done in QUAD PICKING. Here is the direct link to lesson one again just to confirm. I"m going to dig in to your video to see if you have enough BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS!!!! Congrats on drawing first blood!!!

Well played Soldier!!! Your playing here is really quite good. You have splendid technique and precision. Well done!!! However, I can't rank you up on this performance for one simple reason. While you are playing in a very even, precise manner, it does not seem connected to the metronome. It's as if the metronome is just going on in the background. maybe slow down just a bit as speed is something that comes almost for free once everything else is worked out.

Try to play so that each pick strike connects with a click of the metronome. You may need to speed up the metronome, but play slower. That way you can tell if each strike is happening with a click. As I always say, you have to learn to play like a Robot before you can Shred like a God!!

Onward!!!

Yes, I was a bit worried about that. The metronome in the video is not the one that I played over originally.
I recorded my guitar with Reaper and then added an audio track of a 130bpm metronome. I guess I didn't
manage to synchronize the both tracks. I will remake the video and send it to you, thanks. I'll add the metronome
before the final cut of the video, so that I'm sure it's perfectly synchronized.

See you on the videochat.

Whatever you do, please don't add the metronome in later. That defeats the entire point right? If you need some tips on recording the click, or making a click track and adding it to reaper please just let me know smile.gif

The good news is you can record the click with guitar. There are tons of ways to do this. Make SURE you record the metronome click that you are playing to or I can't really tell if you've accomplished the mission. Onward!

Hello, sir!

I finally made some time for practicing the shred drills. Here is my take of the task:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3U4QSl-NMNA&feature=youtu.be

Greetings!

You start of really strong on this one Soldier! But....about 16 seconds in you start to drift from the metronome and the timing falls down a bit. You've clearly made BIG improvements in you PICKING and MUTING!!!! Which is great to see smile.gif

TAKE ONE MORE TRY/PASS on #4 FOCUSING ON THE METRONOME.

Your pick strikes should be a subdivision of the "count" E.G. Four alternating pick strikes every time you count 1, another four strikes durin 2, same with three and four. Go ahead and count time and tap your food or bang your head. Timing (along with basic picking is the entire point of this lesson so you have got to stick the landing Solldier!!
