GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Engl Sovereign E-368

Posted by: Muris Varajic Oct 26 2008, 12:48 PM

Hello everybody!

I've been searching for a powerful and versatile
combo for a while, combo that has enough gain and channels
so I could use it for most of my gigs with just FX unit added,
no dist pedals,boosters etc.
And so I found this http://www.engl-amps.com/index3.html combo, did some research about it
and finally bought it,I should have it tomorrow
and will write a review as soon as I test it enough!

Oh and by the way,
our GMCer Chast played the very same amp before,
I asked him to try the amp for me cause there is
no Engl dealer here in Bosnia.
So he actually located this showroom model in store in Frankfurt,
which was less expensive comparing with new one, thanks Chast!! biggrin.gif

Cool looking forward to reading your review, I myself tried a Engl thunder combo the other week there good amps.

Hey you must be getting your ENGL from my local store Musik Schmidt in Frankfurt!!

Yeah,that is the one! smile.gif

I am pretty sure I played your amp there once and I actually liked it for it's versitality. Better than all those soul-less extreme highgain stacks by engl.

Yeah, that's why I went for combo instead of head,
combo usually has more "soul",that's true. smile.gif

that's why I asked Chast and some other guys
to test it a bit for me. smile.gif

Wow Muris, that's a really expensive amp. I was just looking at musiciansfriend $2899USD before tax, holy crap.

Posted by: Emir Hot Oct 27 2008, 03:08 PM

Make some short video please, I want to hear that amp. I also wrote to Engl yesterday about the possible endorsment deal.

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Oct 27 2008, 05:59 PM

If you have SM57 or some microphone to record that amp (and have a bit of spare time) we would very much appreciate it Muris. A small demo would be awesome smile.gif

Speaking of effects, the only thing this baby actually needs(as most of the amps imho)
is a gentle cut at 5Khz or som when using high gain,
G-Force has this cut option
and all that "buzzing" on high gain settings
just simply goes away.
Clean is just beautiful and drive is outstanding,
will try to record something asap. smile.gif

Ahh,I wasn't crying if that is what you're saying! laugh.gif Joking. wink.gif

This amp was really a hit,
so many options in one combo(plus FX unit),
less cables,faster response,everything works just perfect. smile.gif

Luckily Chast found this showroom model in a local store
and I got it for pretty descent price. smile.gif

Just an update,
more messing around with this combo
and I'm just shocked by reaction of its clean channel.
I knew that high gain would be great,it's Engl after all,
but clean channel is so sweeet!!

Oh,and I bought 2 extra handles for this hmmm....34 kg baby. biggrin.gif
Gonna do some drilling on Saturday, actually not just drilling,
we need to dig 2 holes, 15cmx10cmx1.2cm(LxHxD).
Luckily, the wood is 2cm thick so we will not end on the other side of it. wink.gif

Posted by: Tjchep Oct 29 2008, 11:06 PM

Do you think this sounds better than the mesa? or do you just like it for its portability?

Paal is on trading spree!!!! laugh.gif

Would love to explain how it should be done
but I'm not gonna do this by myself,
it needs some pro machines and tools
so I'm taking it to a pro guy in his shop to do it for me. smile.gif

Actually drilling holes is no big deal, you can surely do that by yourself,
and just simple tighten the screw,as Ivan did.
But I need to dig a hole, that requires special tools. smile.gif

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Oct 30 2008, 12:52 PM

Oh yes. I can drill holes but I'm a bit drill happy laugh.gif. I've banned myself from the drill usage biggrin.gif

I think I saw it in a local store the other week actually! Well I'm not 100% sure it was that model, but it sure looked like it!
The shop is quite close to where I work so will have to swing by there again to check if it was indeed the same and if so try it out!

Great Muris! We have been talking about this amps brand with Lian because we saw many important band using it. But we have the same problem than you... there isn't any dealer in Argentina so we can't try them. dry.gif

I couldn't try it either so I asked few people to try it for me.
It's not greatest solution of course but you can get some opinions after all.
Either way,I'm fully satisfied with it,
clean is great, drive is Engl-ish,you can't go wrong with it. smile.gif

you may get one even without samples,
this amp is just brilliant, tons of gain and with integrated Noise Gate
it's quiet as a baby. smile.gif

Yeah, there is everything inside when it comes to preamp sound shaping,
however I'm using G-Force in fx loop with it for certain effects and that's all.
