Anyone has any experience with small scale guitars?

what I wonder is if they can make good travel guitars. I might try one tomorrow (a jackson), them seem small+light enough but the short scale is what I worry most and while don't have much expectation on tone wouldn't want it to be too bad smile.gif

Probably will be fun for the first 5 minutes but wouldn't want to hate it after days...

I never owned one but I have jammed on them at local shops - it takes a few seconds/minutes to get used to the size differential.

Personally, I don't find the size difference enough to consider it more convenient to travel with (unlike the guitars you find without head stocks and extremely small bodies) but that's just my two cents.

I usually just lug around my standard size guitars tongue.gif

EDIT: although nothing is more manly than playing heavy metal riffs on a 3/4 scale hello kitty guitar tongue.gif

I have a Fender Duo Sonic that I tune A to A.
Technically it's not a 'travel' guitar. It's a student or young beginner instrument, or at least that was how it was marketed in the 60s. Smaller body, short (3/4) scale neck.
Cool axe. Really sounds great 'high' tuned.

A few years ago, Darek made a video playing on a 3/4 guitar. He succeeded to make a cheap Harley Benton to sound really awesome. Actually this was his purpose "You can adjust a cheap gear to sound decent". He really proved this thing but...anyway I'm sure his fingers can make any piece of wood to sound killer wink.gif

Here is the video:

Great info's, thanks smile.gif

The store also has a jackson js11 and I'll compare the weight and size (weight is more important to me). I use bus and subways so might also think of a cheapo I won't be sad if I bump it somewhere with a softcase or get it a bit wet when raining.

High tune idea is great, definitly sounds better than video's that install thicker strings I watched but such alternate tuning won't work for me.

Played the guitar smile.gif

It was a red jackson with dinky body, the store owner had already setuped it nicely. Funny but sounded very decent by any standards (with strings from factory and standard tuning), I'm guessing thanks to the ceramic humbuckers. Infact, its not for sale anymore as the store owner decided to keep it for himself biggrin.gif He was checking duncan pickups while I was leaving the store smile.gif

It was the same weight with a js11, the body wood on it is different I guess. first 12 frets weren't so hard for me to get used to but the lower frets, specially doing sweeps was harder.

There also was a pink fender, didn't feel or sound any good compared to the jackson. He said those guitars (jacksons) aren't produced anymore and they sell very well (usually parrents buy them). Quality was much better than the js11 although its slightly more affordable.

So, I'd recommend it but since the weight is the same and as chris mentioned the body isn't that small, its not for me. Was a fun experience though smile.gif

Since its Turkish here's the list; Sperzel locking tuners, brass nut, seymour duncan PU's, cts push-pull switches, treble bleed and the entire wiring is changed smile.gif

By the way, I pulled the trigger for a hofner shorty last week but got a phone call as it was actually not in stock although the website said so sad.gif not really sad as most of my friends didn't like the hofner when I showed them some photo's biggrin.gif

Lots of guy are using HB guitar in france, and everyone have good feedback from, even with lowend one, change some stuff like tuner, pickups and pots, do a good neck tuning and it's awesome.
