Hello Gabriel
Thanks for accepting me in your monitoring program .
sorry for the late reply btw.
here's some of info about me that might help you.
- been playing guitar since 2008 at first I was playing only classical guitar
you can watch some of my crappy vids in the links below smile.gif

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKVhBfCDSjQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPpHVtWyM_Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xqOFcgPaG0

I was always interested in electric guitar but unfortunately western music is not very popular where I live
so I was lucky to find someone who could teach me classic guitar just to get the basic knowledge of the instrument
then last year I decide to start looking on the internet to learn what I actually liked about the instrument.

I love a lot of kinds of music not only rock and metal
but in this area I like bands such as Manowar, Megadeth, Ironmaiden, Metallica, Sabbath, Dethklok,
zztop, the Georgia satellites, red hot chilli peppers, tenariwen, pinkfloyd, eric clapton, satriani, steve via. guns n roses I also like blues and folk metal but I cant recall any favorite band at the moment.
in five years from now .. I can't be specific about this but I surly want to grab my guitar and rock out real good ASAP smile.gif
maybe I'd start to make clean good covers of my favorite solos and bands .. compose some good solos and guitar riffs.. to upload on my channel !! since that's the only stage I can rely on where I live.

I can practice from 2 to 3 hrs everyday.

I havent played live before, no .. not even with my friends .. haven’t known anyone who share the same passion before.

what's my weakest and strongest points ? I guess I still know little about guitar to answer that properly.. but in a technical point of view .. Id say that my hands tends to sweat a little and that makes the whole playing experience uncomfortable .. but it doesn’t bother so much till now except in the summer where the weather gets too hot.

I know the basic stuff about music theory .. timing, major and minor chord construction, major and minor scales, the pentatonic scale ..

yes I can record my self .. I use guitar Rig and a cheap webcam .. I guess you've seen my vids in the Rec Room before
but once I guess better in playing I'll spend some money on a good cam and learn more about making good videos.

wanna c some vids ? watch the links above and you can also check my posts in the Rec room.

btw way I have worked with Cosmin before on the two lesson
and the lesson I'm working on right now is Ben's vibrato odyssey I'll upload my take here..
I’m not done with it yet I still have more work to do on it.
check it out and let me know what you think.

if you have any more questions plz let me know.

Tnx

Hi Anese! Thanks for this info! Your classical guitar videos are really cool. I think that having learn to play that stuff is a great background for you. I remember Zakk Wylde saying on an interview that he took classical guitar lessons and then when he switched to electric he used that technique combined with pick in an hybrid technique called Hybrid Picking, and he is a monster on it!

I've been also checking some of your REC takes, picking hand, power chords. Could you please post here the last take of each of the GMC lessons that you've worked?

Posted by: Anese Mar 8 2015, 09:21 AM

Hello Gabriel

Here's the link for my last takes on the the power chord and picking hand lessons

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szj66ofHRBQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNbO-6tekmI

I also anttached an Audio take I recorded yesterday for Ben's Vibrato lesson which I'm still working on

Thanks

Hi mate! Thanks for the links. I think that your take on the alternate picking lesson is good so you are ready for the next step on this technique. I was thinking on this lesson that combines legato with alternate picking, in order to incorporate the work over a new technique: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato_and_picking_beginner/

and in order to continue your work on power chords but on a more "musical" situation, I think that a lesson like this one can work: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Classic-Punk-Sex-Pistols/

I have many lessons in the style of at this level so you can check my archive to choose another lesson that covers the style of a band that you like more. Check my archive http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Gabriel-Leopardi/

What do you think?

Posted by: Anese Mar 11 2015, 07:42 PM

Hello Gabriel
I have looked through both of the lessons, and they seemed fine to me, I have not looked through all of your rock rhythm lessons yet, but if I found a one that i liked more I'd let you know. however, I'd rather finish working on my vibrato lesson and take it to the REC room before I step on the new lessons . so have you listen to my vibrato lesson take ? what do you think?
if you have other practice plans, please let me know.
Thank you

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 12 2015, 02:40 PM

Hi Anese, your plan sounds good to me.

Your vibrato work is evolving good. There are many parts that sound really good while some others need still to be polished. I notice that there are some moments the rhythm of your vibrato doesn't go with the groove of the backing (ex: 00:25), and there are also some pitch issues, mostly when you move to higher notes (for example at 00:12). The last notes of the lesson have more notorious pitch issues (00:55).

To clarify, I think that your take on this lesson is not bad, but you have to focus on this details to master it. Practicing over the original lesson can really help for this.

Posted by: Anese Mar 13 2015, 04:41 PM

Hello Gabriel
thanks for your feed back
I've playing the first three part here
can you check and let me know how is it. specially about the rhythm in the third part.
i also tried to upload the Guitarrig setting files that I use, to show the settings and amp im using but unfortunately
it says i can not upload these kind of files.
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 14 2015, 05:06 PM

Hi mate, rhythm is much better on this new take. There is still some room to make the 8th notes and triplets even tighter but you are very close. Practice the tune a bit more over the original lesson and then get back to the backings track, I think that you'll master this soon.

About guitar rig files, I think that you can share them if you first zip the files. Try it and let me know.

Posted by: Anese Mar 14 2015, 05:20 PM

Hello Gab
thanks for that
here's a zipped Guitar rig file attached, Id like you to see if I can find a better setting close to the original lesson
tone color, if you have please zip it and send it over to me.
I hope I can nail this one by the end of next week can't wait to start working on new stuff happy.gif
thanks

Hi Anese, what version of Guitar Rig are you using?

Posted by: Anese Mar 16 2015, 09:56 AM

version 5.0.2 (R2476), why ?

ok! to be able to open it because I don't use it! I'll check if there is a demo version to open your preset.

By the way, could you please share some print screens to let me see your current settings?

Posted by: Anese Mar 17 2015, 08:08 PM

hello Gabriel
here i attached two screens, this was a preset already included in Guitar rig, I had to change some nobs to get a better sound.
even though it seems complicated but this is the only one i could find which is so close to the original lesson tone color.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 18 2015, 01:34 PM

Hi mate, thanks for the print screens. You say that you can't get a similar color and it's normal because if you check Ben's lesson he adds in the description that he is using a Marshall amp while your patch is build based on a mesa boogie amp. Those presets usually have complex combinations of modules that can confuse so I recommend you to start a new preset build with a simple chain:

Guitar - Ov Pedal - Marshall Amp - Cabinet

Check out Ben's details about settings:

Gear: Marshall JVM 410H, OD1 channel (Red setting) Bass - 1 Mid - 9 Treb - 6 Gain - 3

There you also have the EQ balance that can be a starting point. Please try it and let me know what happens.

Posted by: Anese Mar 29 2015, 10:18 PM

Hello Gabriel
I tried some combinations of what you suggested I got some good sounds but I feel
more comfortable with the preset that I previously used.
however I was trying to work on that last B-string note of the vibrato lesson ..please listen and let me know
what you think.
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 30 2015, 01:51 PM

Well, this amp that you are using will have more sustain and mid bass frequencies than Marshall so if you like it more you can keep it since that's related to your taste and can help to develop your own tone/style.

The audio sample sounds good. The vibration could be a bit wider to reach the original but the speed is very close. How does it sound over the backing?

Posted by: Anese Apr 18 2015, 08:32 PM

Hello Gab
sorry that took a little while but did my best to make it sound as close as possible.
I played the last part along with the backing track.. there are several chops ..listen and let me know what you think
Thanks

Posted by: Anese Apr 19 2015, 10:25 PM

Hello Gabriel
I noticed that my guitar volume was a bit louder than the backing track and I thought it would sound better if i lower the volume.
here's another take I recorded today.
check it and let me know what you think.
thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 20 2015, 02:23 AM

Hi Anese, thanks for the audio. I can say that your vibrato is evolving well but the pitch that you are reaching is not precise. The slower vibrato is a bit lower than the pitch while the faster is higher. The timing is ok, but you have to be careful with pitches.

Does it make sense?

Posted by: Anese Apr 21 2015, 09:22 PM

Hello Gabriel
I hope this one is better, listen and let me kn0ow what you think
thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 22 2015, 12:46 AM

Hi mate, the first half is much better, the second (faster) is below the pitch now, so try a bit higher but not as high as the previous take. Ok?

Posted by: Anese Apr 30 2015, 08:48 PM

Hello Gab
how about this one
thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 1 2015, 03:13 AM

Hi Anese, it's again a bit better than the previous one. The rhythm of your vibrato goes ok with the backing, but the second one (faster) is still a bit lower than the correct pitch. Please keep on working on it.

Posted by: Anese May 2 2015, 01:22 AM

Hello again Gab
I tried to raise the pitch a bit more, do i need more ?
tmx

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 2 2015, 04:16 PM

Hi Anese, yes, this is better now. It still need practice to sound more consistent and regular but you are on the right track. I'd like to hear you playing the whole lesson, and if it's possible on a video. smile.gif

Posted by: Anese May 10 2015, 09:30 PM

Hello Gabriel
Check these two takes.
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 11 2015, 04:01 PM

Hi Anese! Great job! You did a very good job with this lesson. It's ok if you continue practicing it being careful with pitch, but you are now ready to start to apply this technique on more musical lessons and your own phrasing.

Congrats for the great and hard work!

Hello Gabriel
Thank you for rating me in the REC room.
Do you think I should move on to the lessons you suggested a while back ?
I checked both lessons and they seem quiet enjoying.
if you agree with me. do you suggest to work on both lessons simultaneously ? if not, then which one I suppose to start with?
or do you have any particular practicing plan ?
let me know what you think
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 14 2015, 03:56 PM

This depends on you, but if you ask me, I would work on both since they cover different and important topics. It's important to divide your time to work enough each one. You can work on 1 new part of each every day of the week and after a week you should have learnt both, then it's time to connect everything and practice.

Posted by: Anese May 17 2015, 07:27 PM

Hello Gabriel
here's my first go on the first part of the picking and legato lesson.
i used a slow downer to practice the lesson. the recorder take is at 95% speed.
is it ok to use such method for practicing?

Also while playing the legato notes i muted the lower string with my middle finger and kept moving it up to the next string as
I play up the fret beard. is that right or wrong ?

let me know what you think.

Thank you

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 18 2015, 03:38 PM

Hi mate, the lick on the audio sample sounds great, good job!

I don't get what you mean in your question. It's ok to mute the strings that you are not playing but I should see how you do it. Do you have a video?

Hello Gabriel
I don't think I would be able to get the angle with a video.
Let me explain here...
When you pull off a string u accidentally hit the next lower string by the pull off finger. So I muted that string with my middle finger of my picking hand.. And I as I move to the next string to play another pull off - hammer on line.. I (move /tilth) my picking hand slightly up and place my muddle finger on the string beneath the string which I'm playing the hammer on pull off notes on to muted as well and so on.
Get it??
Don't forget to tell me if it's acceptable to practice with a slow downer or not.

Thanks man

I was trying to find a good sound for the punk rock lesson.
check this preset sound i found on guitar rig. how does it sound ?
also tell me what do you think about my timing for the first two chords.

there's also my first attempt on the G scale part for the legato lesson, it feels a bit noisy to me .. listen and let me know what you think

Thank you

Ah ok, now I get it. I mute the closer lower string to what I'm playing with the index of my fretting hand. Even when I'm playing a fret with that finger, I use it in a way that besides pressing the fret, it mutes a bit the lower string, and also as a bare mutes all the higher ones. So this finger combined with the palm or my right hand for lower strings is enough to mute the strings that I'm not playing. Try it and let me know if you need help.

About practicing with slow downer, yeah! It's a great tool! Go for it.

The tone for the Sex Pistol lesson is ok, I think that I would set it with a bit less drive since it's not necessary to make it so dirty being a rhythm tone. About your timing, it's ok, maybe it's a very little before the beat but I'm being very strict, it's ok, just focus on it when you play it.

The lick sounds good. It has some little moments when the sound is dirty and it's related to the fact that you play the following string without muting totally the previous one. The more precise you are with this the cleaner all the notes will sound.

Great! You can check out this lesson about muting, which includes musical uses as well but that can give you an overall idea of this concept: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-lessons/basics-of-muting-101-tutorial/

About your tone, I think that it's good on the audio that you sent so I don't feel you need to do some specific tweak, however it's always good to experiment with this to get used to the different tones you can get modifying different settings. The only thing that I commented is about the quantity of drive, this can be lowered from the amp or from the overdrive pedal, just experiment with it.

Hello Gabriel
I will check the muting tutorial.. thank you for referring that lesson.. I was looking through youtube the other day about such a thing .. i didnt know that I could find something like this in here...

for the Punk Rock tone .. I understand that I can control the drive from the Screamer Pedal by turning down the drive knob..but while doing that I dont hear any kind of changes.. but while turning down the preamp knop from the amp .. I start to hear less distortion... so I believe that's the way to do it in this case.
I'll post a take with the preset screenshot later on.

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 22 2015, 07:43 PM

Yes! The overdrive reacts different depending on the settings that you are using on the amp so if you have a lot of drive on the amp, the overdrive will make the sound a bit dirtier and add sustain but if you lower drive from it, you won't notice a big change.

how are you >
have a listen to this part and let me know what you think.
now since I have to start working on connecting the whole thing together .. do you have any method or way to practice that ?
I noticed that as I progress to new part of the track my muscle memory tends to get weaker and loses track of the previous parts ...
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 27 2015, 02:10 PM

Hi Anese, it sounds great!

In order to start connecting the different parts, it's good to work on connecting 2 parts first. This means that you will start creating bigger blocks now, that then you'll connect again in even bigger parts. It should be a progressive process, does it make sense?

this take is at 85% speed playing along the backing track.

so what do you think ?

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for your feed back.
I missed some notes there but it's not a big deal the
Only thing I'm struggling to do it is the last vibrato note
On the D scale. it's kinda difficult to do a vibrato right after lagato.

The second thing im worried about is when I tried to play the first three parts over the metronome I couldn't do it. Well it didn't sound cool and I didnt want to force my brain to do something boring.
But when I tried to play over the backing track .,..bam!! Everything flew so naturally from the first go no matter what speed I choose.
So is that a problem??
Talk to you soon
Ah... Don't think I forgot to practice the punk lesson im working on that as well. .
Thanks

mm that's not a big problem, if you can play tight over drums, you should be able to do it over metronome after some little practice. Drummer divides the beat with hihat and that helps, so when you play over metronome, you should imagine the hihat sounding over the beat in 8th, you can use your head to make it easier. For example, if you move your head down with the beat and keep it moving groovy, the second 8th note will happen every time your head gets back to normal position.... does it make sense?

Great to see this one evolving! The legato sections are less tight than the picking ones, but you're on the right track, just keep on the hard work! smile.gif

and once again thanks for help.
have a good day.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 31 2015, 05:37 PM

Hi Anese! This sounds really good! Your playing is very tight and precise on the chords and melodic sections. You just have to learn the last measures and record a take for REC program. You'll be ready in a few days.

About your tone, I feel that it has too much distortion, maybe lowering drive could help to make it sound more classic punk style. Experiment and let me know what happens.

Congrats!

What other things are you planning to work?

let me take some takes for the last two lessons in the REC room first then we'll see what can we do next.
btw I recorded a take of the punk lesson today for the REC room, if you think it's good enough ill post it there and see what the other masters have to say/.

take to you later.

Hi Anese, the take is good enough for the REC. The only thing that I note that can have a bad reception is that your guitar is a bit out of tune. That's not very acceptable at REC. But your playing good.

Hello Gabriel
I tuned and recorded another take..
check the REC room.
I also need a new set of strings I guess I had these for about 4 months now ... tongue.gif
Thanks for your help.

Hello Again Gabriel
I recorded a video take for the lagato lesson.. I missed the last note but let me know what you
think in general.

Hi Anese, you are getting good sound with both techniques on this video which is not a small thing. However you need to focus on timing since there are many parts that aren't going tight with the backing. It's not something really big but it happens on small fragments of each part, in most of them so you really need to continue practicing trying to avoid it.

Other than that, this sounds very good, keep on the hard work!

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for your help
wink.gif my guitar tune is really bugging me... the sex pistol take on the
REC room is a new take i recorded after you mentioned that my previous one was out of tune.. and before I recorded that one
I made sure that each of the strings was exactly in tune. ( I tune with a guitar rig built-in tuner) .
however I was wondering if my strings are too old to stay intune.. so I changed my strings and I recorded a new take ..
and for my ears it doesn't sound much different.. I don't know what is the issue..
listen to this new take and let me know what you think ..
Thanks

Hi mate, the new take shows that there is something wrong with your strings... maybe they are a bit old, or maybe your guitar need some calibration. When has been the last time you did both things?

Hello Gabriel
I Have changed my strings with a new set of elixe strings right before
I recorded that take.
But I've never calibrated my guita. I had this guitar for almost a year now.. Unfortunately there are no guitar techs where I live.. Is it possible to learn how to calibrate it by my self?
Any how before we go any further with this I will send another recording playing each string at a time to confirm if the guitar is really out of tune or not.
Thanks

Hello again Gabriel
I was thinking maybe the preset that I used had something to do with the problem.
upon reviewing the preset components I saw this thing called (equalizer shelving), I dont know what that is, but when I turned it off
my guitar sounded a bit wider and less dull.
so I changed to another preset called (punky) .. have a listen .. does my guitar sound more in tune now ? or is it the same.
Thanks

Hi mate, the tuning seems to be better on this new take but it's not related to EQ. One experiment that you could do is to tune your guitar perfectly and then check each string pressing at fret 12, if the tuning is also perfect there, your guitar is calibrated, if not, it needs some set up.

Try it and let me know what happens.

Hi Gab
I was just watching some vids on Youtube about guitar intonation and I saw this 12 fret tuning check that you mentioned.
And when I tried that check on my guitar I noticed that some strings are just a mili fraction out of tune on the tuner.
Do you recommend setting it up?
As I saw in the video it's not a complicated process I just have to adjust the screws on the bridge.
This is the video I saw by the way:

I tried to calibrate it as I saw in the vid.

Hello Gabriel

after I read your comments about my last take there was a bit of frustration but at the same time I was glad that you pointed something
I was totally not aware of.

watching those strings goin up as i switch to some chords is indeed something need to be fixed.
however before I go any further with this I'd like to check the action of my strings.
The problem is i can't really decide if they are high or low or if they are quite fine and there's nothing wrong with my string action.
so I took some pics around the 3rd and 7th fret.
take a look at those pics and let me know what you think .. while I get lost in you tube and enlighten my self more about this topic.

Thank you

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 19 2015, 10:04 PM

Hi mate, it's great to know that the comments helped to discover an unknown issue. Now that you have it in mind, you'll be able to slowly avoid it.

About the strings action, from what I can see in the pictures, there is some room to set them lower. The problem can appear if the frets mute the strings when pressing, but if you set them lower and it doesn't happen, you'll find your guitar more comfortable to play.

Hello Gabriel
after viewing some vids about setting a guitar action, I did something usually known as the credit card - business card test, and it seems that
my action is fine there's no need to adjust.

Hi mate! Good job! It's great to see that your playing is improving from take to take! The tuning is ok now, so maybe it was a mix of things. I notice that you are doing less pressure with your fingers now so this could be the most important reason.

The only thing to pay attention is timing because sometimes you tend to go a bit before the beat. Other than that, this is very good.

Keep on the hard work!

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for your feed back.
you brought up something that I wasnt really certain if im doing it right.
I don't really have any practicing plan or routine that I'm following.
once I pass a lesson i totally move to the next lesson and start practicing to add my take on the REC room.
I'm not doin this on purpose .. I know that I have to practice the previous lessons as well .. but I always start my practicing sessions with the
new lesson that I'm working on .. and once I achieve my target tempo.. or i get close to that hard chord shift .. I get that feeling of achieving the most wanted goal of the day .. and don't feel motivated to practice my previous lessons ... I don't know if i explained this well .. but i think I have a problem on how to manage my practicing..

one thing that I don't like is that depressing feeling .. when thinking how long I've been seriously hooked with the guitar .. and what did I acheive ??
for my experience with this online society, I've been here for almost a year and yet i only managed to pass 3 lessons .. that seems quite
nothing compared to the time I invested.

finally I do not feel that bad about it. .. after all i enjoy what I'm doing .. but sometimes I just feel a little worried about it.

Thanks for bringing this matter .. maybe we can sort it out together.

Thank you

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 10 2015, 01:41 PM

Hi Anese,

I have to say that this plan is not bad at all, and that it's giving good results. If it keeps you going and progressing, it's ok. However, if you feel that it takes too much to master a lesson, maybe you are choosing lessons that are a over your current level. Again, this is not bad, but if you think that you'll feel more motivate by mastering more lessons, you could choose lessons a bit easier than the ones that you are choosing.
This doesn't mean that the lesson won't include new stuff for you, but it will take less time to master it... does it make sense?

Hi Anese! Good job with this lesson. It's sounding good. The only thing that I note is that your left hand fingers movement could be smaller. Try to focus on relaxing the hand and keep the fingers closer to the frets while playing this exercise. It will allow you to play it tighter and will be a good adjustment for future faster stuff. It's time to economize movements.

Other than that, this is sounding good, congrats!

Hello Gabriel
I noticed that my fretting hand look flappy as I play thanks for notifying that to so I can focus on fixing that.. I think the only way to fix this is by slowing it down and monitoring my fingers as I play.
anyway do you recommend taking this to the REC room? and which one is better the first or the second take ?
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 3 2015, 07:36 PM

Hi Anese, yes, you can share one of these (the second seems better) to receive more feedback about your playing from other instructors.

About the way to fix it, exactly! Slowing down to be able to think on these details.

Hello Gabriel
I tried to clone the tone of your set up for the arpegio part.
I added a tweetman amp with a flanger.
however Itried so many presets in the amp and the best one i think is close to your original lesson recording is the clean preset (with no flanger).
have alisten to the tracks attached and let me know what you think is best.
ha maybe the screen shot will help you to add any suggestions or tweaks which may make me sound better smile.gif

what about this tune for the lead part ?
does it fit ?
tnx

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 14 2015, 02:25 PM

Hi mate, your tone sounds nice on this sample. I like it. I think that you could add some delay to give a it some kind of ambiance and make it fit better with the backing when mixing it.

Posted by: Anese Dec 18 2015, 08:25 PM

Hello Gabriel
Please check this one for the first lead part and let me know what you think.
you will hear that i changed the tune a lil bit.

in this lesson the guitar has three tunes as I can hear
1-arpegio tune
2- first lead part tune
3- second lead part (distorted) tune.

how should i manage to change between these three tunes on one take ?

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 19 2015, 04:59 PM

Hi Anese, good to see a new take from you.

I can hear that your work on this one is evolving. The main thing to improve here is timing, mostly on parts 2 and 3 where the phrases are not sounding completely tight. Besides this, there is some room to make your vibrato and bending techniques more consistent. Your vibrato could be wider in some parts (some more sustain in your tone could help) and your bending is close but you are not reaching the pitch smoothly.

About this question, I don't understand exactly what you mean. Did you record this in parts?

"how should i manage to change between these three tunes on one take?"

Posted by: Anese Dec 19 2015, 06:26 PM

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for listening!! I will start working on the notes you mentioned.
And about my question:
"how should i manage to change between these three tunes on one take?"
I'm talking about the quitar sound "tone" I should have said. sorry bout that.
In the last lead part I will have to get some distortion.
And since I'm playing using guitar rig I don't know how I can mange to switch or chnage
The tone to distortion while I'm still playing.
I know that when using real pedals you can just hit the button with your foot and you're ready to go.
But how can you do this while on guitar rig or any other modeling amp software?
I hope you got what I mean now. unsure.gif
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 20 2015, 09:15 PM

The only way to do this without pedals is moving your volume pot with your left hand while playing. Experiment moving it and you'll notice how your tone can have more or less drive. Try it and let me know if this solves the problem.

If you mean the volume "gain" knop on my guitar.
Then that's not possible with the preset I'm using since I always Leave it at max.
I'm thinking of using different presets on guitar rig and switch between them while playing.
But the question is how? Maybe use the keyboard as a foot pedal..
Btw how did you do it when you recorded this lesson?
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Dec 21 2015, 01:41 PM

In those days I used to record with my Pod HD500 so I had it in my floor to switch tones. For guitar rig, you could use any kind of foot midi controller. Check out some videos with ideas: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=guitar+rig+foot+controller

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for the advice...the first https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRpnESK4H38 in the search result,
shows that it's possible to manage things with a regular keybord.. I did some more searching and it appears that
you can assigne other button on the keybord to functoin as an off/on button for any elements on your rig...
so you can add multible pedals and switch them on and off just by taping the assigned key.
once I start working on the last part of this lesson which need a bit of a drive (I'm not sure if Drive is the correct word, correct me if I'm wrong) I will do the trick and see how it goes.
btw have a listen on the attached file ..i was focusing more on the first two bend while i was playing .. let me know what you think

Your sample sounds good. I also think that the third version is the best one. Your playing is getting better! You just have to adjust the faster passages which are not sounding completely tight.

But this is on the right track!

Hello Gabriel

Hi Anese! This is a very good first take! You can play everything at tempo and most of the parts sound clean and clear.

You just need to give some more time to this to make the faster runs sound tighter and to give more "feeling" to you playing with the use of vibrato and a more consistent bending.

Keep on practicing and focus on details now.

Well done!

Hi mate,

this new take is very good! Your timing is much better now in the whole take. Your bending is precise and your vibrato is getting better and more connected with the groove.

There are two things that I think you should have in mind during the next days of work:

- Relax your hands and let your body go more with the groove. It's time to think a bit less about your playing and feel it. Move your head, tap with your foot, go with the groove.

- Tone Tweak: I think that your tone would sound warmer. The clean tone is not bad, it has some room to sound warmer, but the distorted tone is a bit "trebbly". You need to check if you can adjust EQ or maybe trying different amps to get a warmer sound.

I feel like I'm starting to understand this instrument more and more .. no matter how much I play each small part .. it feels different to my ears every time I play it and never get bored with it ... finally I started to enjoy something in this life
rolleyes.gif ... this might sound a bit over exaggerate to you but that's how I truly feel.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I can not guarantee that my sense to grove could get better tomorrow or today.. your a fine musician and you know
this will take time.

for the tone part .. i had some doubt about that trepply sound but I just wanted to try that pedal on guitar rig.
however on this new take I went back to the same old pedal and tried to make the solo part a bit warmer and as close as i can get to the original lesson.

the main problem I usually encounter about tone,is that when I first grabbed the electrical guitar I knew nothing about
amps .. nothing at all .. and till this moment I still don't know anything .. if it wasn't for the presets i found on guitar rig
I'd be lost ..
however if you can recommend how to get started to learn about amps and pedals and how to tweak them ..that will help me to refine my tune in the future lessons.
maybe you know a good book or a someone who make beginner stuff about amps and tone in this forum or somewhere else.

I can't stay like this I must learn how to use those knobs..

however here's my new https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNePU7vCAec .. I hope I'm ready to post it in the REC room and see what the others think ..

btw sorry for the long post ..

Thanks

Hi Anese, I'm glad to read this! Enjoying the journey is the most important thing. smile.gif

About getting better with amps, it's a matter of trial and error. I use plug ings as I would use the real thing so the more experience I had live and at the studio with my band, the better I've used plug ins. If you don't have real experience there are two things that I would try:

- Searching (google or youtube) for guitar set ups / rigs of guitarists that you like and replicate what they use and how they connect it.

- Using youtube which is full of tests and ideas regarding the use of amps, cabinets, mics and pedals.

Buckethead lesson is ready to receive some more feedback from the masters! However, besides the details that we have been working, I would tweak tuning on this one, I hear pitch issues in the distorted part.

Hello Gabriel
So do recommend to tune and record a new take or use the last take in the Rec room
Tnx

Yes! And be sure that your strings aren't old of your guitar needs to be set up.

Hello Gabriel
A new https://youtu.be/PmqSvvTIucE is ready!! Let me know what you think
It seems that the G string needed to be adjusted from the intonation screw.
When you change new strings that are not the same brand of the old strings does that usually affect the tone screws set up?
Thanks for clarifying what I asked about tone teakage.
It seems that tone is a journey it self..

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 24 2016, 06:26 AM

Hi mate, tuning is better now, but there is still some VERY little issue there that can be related to your guitar calibration or maybe extra pressure of your fingers. By the way, this take is ok for REC, it will be interesting to receive some more feedback.

Hello Gabriel
Last two months I wasn't able to renew my subscription on GMS so I figured I might find something to work on my self.
I simply just looked over youtube and tried to learn the Paranoid solo.
have look at my https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T38h6HVIf1s and let me know what do you think, don't bother and go in details just tell me your
impression about it
also what do you suggest to work on next.
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 29 2016, 06:33 PM

Hi mate!

Paranoid solo sounds very good! Your playing is tight and consistent on this one! Well done! smile.gif

I think that you are ready to take your guitar playing to a new level. I would start a routine that covers 2 elements:

- Technique

Continue developing the current ones and practice some new ones.

- Improvisation

Theory applied. Learning licks, jamming.

Do you have some lessons in mind?

PS: If possible, could you write here a list with all the GMC lessons that you've worked and put a status word like Completed, In Progress, Learnt but not mastered. ?

Posted by: Anese Jan 30 2016, 01:47 AM

Hello Gabriel

Thanks for the paranoid solo feed back my friend. smile.gif

here's a list for the previous lessons that i worked on ..
the status of the lessons are according to what I think about my playing .. if you recommend that we have to work more on some of the lessons below then please let me know .. however I keep practicing on those from time to time ..
but I always prefer new lessons to keep my self motivated.

- Picking Hand basics \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52903&p=695025&#entry695025 (Learned)

- Hard Rock Power Chords\ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=53247&p=699092&#entry699092 (Learned but not mastered)

- Ben's Vibrato Odyssey 5 \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54349&p=711224&#entry711224 (Learned)

- Classic Punk: Sex Pistols \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54717&p=715770&#entry715770 (Learned)

- Legato and Picking \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=55020&p=719557&#entry719557 (Learned)

- BucketHead Style II \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56530&st=0&p=726199&#entry726199 (Learned)

=====

I feel very enthusiastic about the new learning approach that you suggested .. as a matter of fact I was goin to ask you
to start learning some theory and try to implement them on a recorded improvisations ..or maybe participate on the GMC collabs biggrin.gif

I don't really have something in mind for a new lesson, I'll leave that for you to decide or you can suggest several ones
to pick from.
btw I enjoyed the Buckethead lesson very much it was the best thing that i felt comfortable with while playing. you did a really good job with it plus it covers a lot of areas.

for the past two days I was working on the legato lesson which we previously worked on.. on the monitoring program you mentioned a very important note which still rings in my head ( you mentioned that my fingers are FLAPPY on some parts of the lesson) and of course that's not a good thing and I should work my way to get rid of that habit.
for now I'm trying to amend my hand position in a way that my fingers stay close to the fret board and play the lines with less movements.

Thanks for your time

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jan 31 2016, 05:19 PM

Ok, based on the things that we've been talking, I suggest you start working on these lessons:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Warming-Up-And-Finger-Fitness/
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/BB-King-Blues/

and apply the concepts of this lesson to bb king lesson or any of the lessons that you've learnt:

Hello Gabriel

I've been working on the lessons that you suggested
the blues lesson seems full of new things to learn.
check this short https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1M_DLXelqQand let me know what do you think of the guitar tone also tell me if im reaching the correct pitches or not.
(sorry for those muted notes) I tried to improvise rolleyes.gif

I'm also working on the warming up lessons, it drawed my attention toward my hands shape.
I think that will fix how I will keep my fingers close to the finger board and make my hand look less flappy with a smooth motion
I'll try to make a video and see how that's going.

For the theory lesson I haven't checked that yet. I'll let you know in a while

Thanks buddy

Hi mate,

I think that your tone sounds good, but your guitar has some tuning issues. It's not perfectly tuned or maybe it needs some set up. Your bending is not bad, but more practice will make is sound more natural, and effortless. This is on the right track, but needs more days to assimilate the licks. Keep on working!

Posted by: Anese Mar 6 2016, 01:34 AM

Hello Gabriel
how are you?
Ive been working on the warmp up lesson recently, i thought this was goin to be an easy one but actually i'm struggling with it.
it's kinda difficult for me to make it sound tight and connected..I play this lesson with a 0.66 mm pick, I tried to use thicker picks
but they feel rigid for me to play faster passages it kinda slows me down so I find that the 0.66 mm pick the best for me.
this is how I practice the lesson : I play along with the lesson at 80% speed and speeds and start goin faster.
I couldn't exceed 88% speed. if I do try to play at faster speed my fingers crumbles and it does not feel comfortable at all.
anyway I find this very challenging even though the lesson doesnt sound musical to me but I really I wanna play it and
get through with it.

I uploaded a file please listen and let me know what you think. ( this is at 90% speed)
also let me know if you have any tips for better practicing with faster passages.

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 6 2016, 06:12 PM

Hi mate,

I think that the pick is too thin for this type of playing and I can also hear it. The notes are not sounding totally clear, and this issue will become more important at faster tempos. I know that it can be difficult at first to practice with a thick pick (1.00 or 1.5) but it will be an advantage for the future.

So do you suggest to switch to a thicker pick?
The one that I mostly use is Dunlop Maxgrip 0.88
What about this one?
Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 7 2016, 04:02 PM

0.88 is better. This depends on the style that you are planning to play and also on the strings gauge. For metal it's good around 1.00 mm if you use 010 strings. If you go thicker with strings, you can go softer with picks and the opposite. 0.88 is ok, 1.00 is better for hard rock/metal, but you can do your own experiment, try different picks and pay attention to the tone that you have.

and see how that goes.

Hi Anese,

I notice that your hands are a bit out of sync. Try to practice at a slower tempo and be sure that your hands are completely synchronized. This is not a dramatic issue in your playing but it tends to appear here and there, mostly in the first half of this last audio.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 12 2016, 09:33 PM

I think that you can adjust a bit your right hand movement. The movement should be smaller and more straight, more parallel with your guitar. Check out some of my lessons or Ben's and see how we move the right hand when playing alternate picking.

Try to adjust this and share a new video in a few days.

Thanks for the feed back Gabriel

while watching Guido playing this lesson you can see that his alternate picking style is way different.
he pivot his pinky and start picking,
the way I pick feels comfortable for me on all the strings except the Bass E string where it's kind of difficult because I can not rest my hand against the strings while playing on it. but for the rest of the strings it's ok.
however I tried to modify my hand movement a little bit (it still feels a little uncomfortable but I think I will adapt with it sooner). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qCdJuc9wyI

I also changed my pick now I use 2mm dunlop big stubby

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 13 2016, 08:28 PM

Hi mate, the movement in the new video looks much better. One little details to mark: try to hold your pick with the tip of your right hand thumb. It will provide you of more precision.

I haven't posted anything about my progress for a while. I was progressing very slowly on the last
Warmup lesson .. I hope that's normal ..check my last https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDXLctaoMyo

Thank you and Good Luck

yes, this is normal. Your take at 90 sounds good, you are ready to slowly increase tempo. I also think that you can combine this practice with some other stuff covering other techniques like for example legato. What do you think?

we already worked on the lesson you mentioned !! haha I guess that wasnt an impressive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hF_avD5OqpA

Ah great! I missed that one. One good work that you could do that would be totally helpful for me and this thread is to recompile list with all the lessons you've worked and the current status (mastered, in progress, bored of it, or whatever).

About the picking and legato lesson, there is a part 2, check it out and let me know if you think it's a good one for this moment.

The warm up lesson is on the right track! Just focus on playing it tighter and you'll master this one.

Hello Gabriel

Here's a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGXarSafGGkof the warmup lesson (for me this is more of alternate picking practice lesson) since it cover most of the
neck positions. the first two part sounds good to me, but on the last position where it gets at the end of the fret board i start struggling a little. im still working on smoothing up the last part.

I prepared a list of the lessons that you asked me for (I previously posted this list for you but consider this is an updated version) : the number beside the lesson status is the score on the REC room

- Picking Hand basics \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=52903&p=695025&#entry695025 (Learned) REC score : 9

- Hard Rock Power Chords\ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=53247&p=699092&#entry699092 (Learned but not mastered) REC score : 8 (kinda bored with it)

- Ben's Vibrato Odyssey 5 \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54349&p=711224&#entry711224 (Learned) REC socre 9.3

- Classic Punk: Sex Pistols \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54717&p=715770&#entry715770 (Learned) REC score 7

- Legato and Picking \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=55020&p=719557&#entry719557 (Learned) REC score 7.7

- BucketHead Style II \ http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=56530&st=0&p=726199&#entry726199 (Learned) REC score 7

== now these are the lessons that Im working on at the current time ====

- https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Warming-Up-And-Finger-Fitness/ (almost there)

- BB's blues lesson (almost there I also posted some vids and you said its going on the right direction)

- https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Your-First-Phrases/ my first Theory lesson ( I found this is more about phrasing rather than theory and improvising) however this could be good as
an introduction to improvisation. I watch the lesson every now and then and try to mimic the techniques in the video.

I think it's better not to work on any new lessons till i sort out the ones that im currently working on (bb's blues and warmup alternate picking) lessons.

I've been here for more than a year now .. and sometimes I wonder if im doing good or not .. and how far have i gone in
the guitar learning journey

so what do you think my fried? how am i doing over here ? considering GMC the only learning source that im depending on to learn the guitar and I invest no more time in learning anything else rather than the things i work on here.

Thanks

Hi mate,

Thanks a lot for this complete report. I notice progress in your playing and can see that you are going forward. We are on a stage in which the main goal is to develop your overall technique and start finding your voice on guitar. We will be slowly moving more and more to the "creativity" direction (as the your first phrases lesson) in order to get to the main point of everything: making music.

I also think that it's a good idea to take some more time to master the lessons that you are already working at this moment to then decide the next steps to go.

At the same time, it's essential to apply the concepts shared on the first phrases lesson to all those lessons included in this list.

Hi Anese, your videos are perfect for this purpose. wink.gif

It's great to see you polishing the warming up lesson. It starts well, and shows some timing issues in the second half, maybe because your hand gets tired or something like that. It just needs more days. Besides this, I think that you could dedicate some minutes every day (10 minutes) to repetitive short patterns, which is the best way to become faster. Here I'll share with you some recommended exercises for speed: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=44163#

About the phrasing work, that sounds good. I'll wait for that video.

Hello Gabriel

Thanks a lot for the exercises they seem pretty effective ..

This is how work with them .. I open the GP file I play along each lesson at 80 bpm and gradually raise the tempo to 100 pbm then

move to the next exercise on the list.

Im also still working on the warmup lesson here's another https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uip0EZHdH3M i recorded two days ago. let me know what you think

Thanks alot man

Hello Gabriel
Thanks for your feed back.
Here as I promised I recorded some chops of the lessons that we worked on with the phrases
that I learned in the "your first phrase" lesson.
I recorded each part twice, once as it's played originally in the lesson and another played by adding a phrase.
have a listen to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WH4ie8OlW4c and let me know what you think.

I also recorded another https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szTVJySRWs8 for the warm up lesson.

I've been working on the blues lesson as well.. a new take will be uploaded withinin the next few days

waiting for your feed back

Thanks for your help I really appreciate what you are doing for me smile.gif

That's so cool Anese! I love your phrasing video! It's very interesting too see how a small change can make the phrase of your own. I'd love to see you playing longer samples and over the backing track. Is it possible?

The warm up lesson sounds very good. You can keep it in your diary routine, to be played twice every day to keep on playing more and more relaxed.

Congrats on your great job.

Hello Gabriel
I'm glad that you liked my work on the phrasing lessons.
your suggestion is a good Idea but i think it's still early to make recording of my own phrasings right now. I dont know enough tricks yet ... maybe later on when I learn more good stuff .

I've been working on the blues lesson check this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fnX1v84Om0 and let me know what you think. is it good to post it in the REC room and

Hi Anese! Sharing the lesson at REC is a good idea. You already can play the whole thing really well and now there just a few details regarding tone (more sustain) and bending (there are just a few moments in which you don't reach the pitch perfectly) so it's interesting to see what the other instructors have to say.

Let's go for a grade!

Hello Gabriel
How are you doing ? I hope you enjoyed your trip
I did as you suggested I posted my first take of the blues lesson and it seems that they had a good impression about it.
I'm kind of satisfied as well. I will try to fix those minor bends and try show more dynamics as you and the others recommend.

Man sometimes I feel kind of frustrated when I think about what I've achieved on the forum compared to the time I spent here. I think my progress is very slow even though that I practice around 2 hour a day.
Let me know what do you think about this.

by the way here's the last lesson we've been working on :

1- Warming up lesson: we agreed that I should keep this on my daily practice routine
2-Your first phrase lesson: I posted a take where I applied most of the technique in the lesson over some of the lessons that
I previously learned
3- B.B's blues lesson : we've been discussing a lot about it lately.

so what do you suggest for now ? I Cant wait to start working on some new stuff biggrin.gif

Thanks for your help and have a nice day.

However I think that maybe we could try setting weekly/10 days smaller goals in order to keep motivation. What do you think?

Hi Gabby
Usually when i get new lessons to work on that keeps me motivated.
The thing is that Sometimes I just wonder if Im on the right track or not, or am i practicing enough
Or should i work harder.
I just wanted you to clarify weather I'm doing good or not.
However if you ever notice that my progress is not as good as it used to be please let me know!! wink.gif.
For Now what do you have in mind to start working on?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 18 2016, 03:41 AM

Ok! This is the plan that I suggest:

ASSIGNMENT #1:

Goals:

- Improving your bending technique.
- Incorporating bending into your phrasing.

TASK 1:

- Work on this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginner-Bending-Workout/

TASK 2:

- Use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh_pYY6UYIw to practice bending technique over the backing of Beginner Bending Workout.
- Improvise over the same backing, focusing mostly on bending.

Exam and deadline:

By July 28th you'll have to share 3 videos:

- A video playing beginner bending workout (4 coins)
- A video applying Ben's video approach over the backing track (2 coins)
- A video improvising over the backing focusing on bending technique (4 coins)

Each of this videos will be evaluated (check the coins value below). You need to get at least 7 coins to pass. If you pass, we can continue, if you don't you will have a second "call".

Hello Gabriel
My finger is almost healed now, i started prpacticing yesterday so i guess ill have till next monday to
Submit the videos.
Id like to ask if theres a way to make the strings more
Sleek when i bend them because i feel like theres extra frictions against the frets when i bend the strings.
By the way do you recommend getting a real good guitar or should i stick with the one i have.
Thanks

I'm using elixir strings guage 0.23 0.28 0.41 0.61 0.81 1.07
Sometimes I use Ernieball strings but I don't know what guage are those

0.23?? The thinner one? Are you sure?

Ah ok! those are 09 - 042, good choice. We rarelly use the mm when talking about strin gauges.

It's a good gauge for bending.

Hello Gabriel

Its Good to hear that. the reason I asked if there's something I can do about it, is that I see some vids on youtube of guitarists talking
about adding graphite paste on the guitar nut to ease things up or to keep the guitar more in tune .. so I was just wondering if there are
other things or tricks.

Beside that I've been working on the (Bending workout lesson) today is my 11th day I guess and I'm not even close to finish this one
perfectly, it's a tough nut for me. probably those parts at ( 00:53 - 00:56 in the original lesson) I find hard to bend to the right note.. and even if I miss the right note slightly I get a terrible sound like in the one you will hear in the attached file .

However, is there a special name for those kind of bends? I might need to search more about it, maybe ill find something helpful.

I've been working on the trickiest part of this lesson, have a listen to the attached file and let me know what you think about it. how im doing in general ? also tell me if you recommend anything about the preset im using does it fit the original tone color of the lesson?

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 27 2016, 09:31 PM

Hi Anese,

I think that you are talking about double string bends which are usually more difficult than single string ones. I've checked both audios. The first one shows the wrong bending, and it seems that you are doing the double bend that I'm talking about.

Then, the longer bending audio isn't bad at all! There are some bends perfect, and some others pretty close! Once again, the problem is more important is in the double string bending.

Regarding your tone, it sounds good on this. I don't think that you need to tweak it.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 4 2016, 09:35 PM

Hi Anese, there are some bends that reach the correct pitch while some others don't do it. I think that it's around 50% each.

Posted by: Anese Sep 11 2016, 12:11 PM

Hello Gabby
I think it would be better if split this in two parts and work on each one separately.
Please have a listen to this one.

Hey Gabby
I tried to fix that part you pointed out, with the aid of the built-in tuner in Amplitube, I can see how far or below im goin to the target pitch.
Then I turn off the tuner and try to do it by my ears... the problem I'm facing is that my brain has to memorize many pitches while im bending through out the whole track.
anyhow listen to this and let me know if im doing ok.
while learning this lesson i found my self playing that lick at end ..dunno where it come from ..

Hi mate, good job.

This is getting better. Now we have half of the bends on pitch, while the other half is close. This means that your technique is still irregular but that you are very close. The secret is to isolate each of the problematic bends, and practice playing the target note and then bending to it. Doing this diary is the way to go now.

Hi Anese, this is GREAT!

You are extremely close to master this one. Most of the bends are perfect and some aren't wrong but there is some room to polish them. As this is very slight, I've decided to write down each one that presents very small pitch issues.

00:22, 00:27, 00:31, 00:40, 00:49, 1:10.

That's all. Polish a bit more this parts and this will be an 11 at REC grade. biggrin.gif

Thanks for your feed back mate
I guess the new guitar is making this sound a little bit better as well.. it has good intonation and stays in tune all the way up.
unfortunately Im getting some troubles with the floating trem.. it stays in tune the whole session but when i put the guitar down and come the next day to play it gets sharp and I have to re tune it again .. im also thinking to change the string gauge that came with it its 08 I guess.
I bought 09 strings today and I hope things will get better .. Im also searching the internet to learn how to keep this thing in tune after I play with it.

Ill get back to you once i settle this matter

Thanks

Hi Anese, I can say that this new take is a bit better than the previous one but there is still work to do on the bends that I've marked previously. However, I don't think that you need to bore yourself playing this one over and over. We should move forward and keep this lesson to be played twice every day, what do you say?

Yes Gabriel
I can agree with what you've suggested.
however, I added another take here, have a listen and tell me if we are ready to take it to the REC room yet or not.
about the the tuning issue that I mentioned previously about my guitar that it gets sharp after a while, it turned out that the problem
is with my sound interface sometimes it gets a static noise and when i start tuning with Amplitube built-in tuner without turning on my sound monitors or putin my headphone on, so all notes shows as a full step sharp because of the static noise from my sound-terfrace. laugh.gif I noticed that today when I hit the high E string to start tuning it showed F sharp on the Amplitube tuner but for the first time my ears told me that this is an E not an F# as it shows on the tuner so then I discovered that the problem is with my sound interface and all I had to do is just to restart it and everything was ok.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Nov 17 2016, 04:12 PM

Hi mate, great to know that you've found the problem! I think that this new take is similar to the previous one. It's ok, but it has pitch issues on double string bends and some others. By the way, it's always good to share takes at REC since you receive feedback from other instructors, which is very valuable.

Do you have any lesson that you'd like to learn?

Hello Gabby
Darius pointed out an important thing i guess regarding bending and floating trems.
I searched about this and it seems that there are quiet different ways to deal with it.
some choose to balance the trem with their picking hand other use tools.
in the attached file i tried to balance the trem with my picking hand to reach the target pitch (have a listen and let me know what you think.)

I also ordered the (ESP hand adjuster) trem stabilizer it seems like a good choice and it works well.

I wanted an (ibanez backstop) trem stabilizer but unfortunately they dont make those anymore here's in this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQVcFj7MIJA&t=127s steve vai talks about it
showing it attached to his main guitar.

for our new lesson ill see what's out there and ill get back to you, but I wouldnt mind if you have some suggestions as well.
anyway I prefer not to start working on a new lesson till i get my (trem stabilizer) and see how things will work which might take a week or two till I actually get it.

see you soon

see you

Hi Anese, yes, I can hear that the problem with the double stops is smaller but it's still there . The bends at the beginning (00:04, 00:10) are not completely precise so I think that the trem stabilizer sounds like a great idea. I don't have experience with it, but I think that it can be fundamental for your practice.

When is it arriving?

first of all let me wish a new year full of joy and great music and I would like to thank for
all your efforts for accompanying my musical journey last year.
I received the ESP arming adjuster last monday.
I was already goin through the internet and sucking all the information about trem stabilizer before the item arrived.
I installed it, and with little tweaking and trial i think I came to the best set up i can come up with.
here are some photos below and please check the attached file where I play the second part of the bending lesson so you can hear the double stop and the unison bends at the end.

- Beginner Bending Workout (learned) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY8rNENwvDc REC score: 9

besides the lessons that we will start to work on, I would appreciate it if you consider adding something as a start
to work on my improvisation/music theory (please note that Im an absolute beginer for that)

Thanks a lot for your patience and guidance

Hi mate, thanks a lot for the updated list. This really helps me to visualize your whole progress so please keep it updated and post it at least once per month.

I think that we are ready to get into scales and improvisation. We can use some of our theory threads as a guide. I think that a good place to start is at the Blues Theory Guide.

I'd like you to read the points 1.1 and 1.2 and learn the scales shared there. There are some lesson links shared there that you can use to learn the scales. But once you learn the pentatonic, and then the blues scale in the whole neck (you can use any gmc lesson or the scale generator), please practice it over this backing:

And what about working on this one?

It'll take some time and practice to be able to do it better.
I'll start working on the other stuff that you recommended as well.
Thanks Gabby

Hello Gabby
how are you my friend ?
been noodling around the neck with the blues and pentatonic scales for a while now.
I even learned maybe a trick or two to how actually use them and connect the shapes together.
here's a short vid i uploaded
what do you think ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 21 2017, 02:12 PM

Good! That's a nice take. I can hear that your phrasing is connected by ear to what's happening in the background. The next things that you could work to keep on improving your phrasing are:

+ Trying to get out from playing licks that sound like playing the scale box up on down. How? Here are some ideas:

- Practice the scale on 1 string. Learning the scale all along the fretboard on 1 string and create phrases using the same string can provide some fresh air. You can try this with each of the 6 strings, and also experiment creating melodies using 2 or more strings but with a more horizontal approach.

- String skipping: Try skipping strings when phrasing.

- Learn new scale sequences. Learning and practicing different scale sequences can provide new ways of running scales when playing fast licks.

+ Develop expressing techniques:

- More use of bending, vibrato and dynamics while phrasing. You can search for some lessons at GMC covering this topics to incorporate them in your practice.

Hello Gabby

Thank you for your advise, Im glad that take went good.

I tried to implement the points you mentioned in this new take.

have a listen and let me know what you think

Thanks for your help smile.gif

Hi Anese! This is awesome! I can see tbat you are starting to apply the concepts that I've suggested working. Your improvisation starts to sound like a solo. Well done! This is definitely the direction.

Please experiment with the same concepts over this backing and share a new take in 3/4 days:

Then, I'll give you some new tips to work over this one.

Hi Anese, this is going on the right track. The take has important tuning issues. I think that your guitar is out of tune on this one. Please record a new take with your guitar well tuned and then I'll give you a new tip/task to do over this one.

Hello Gabby
I had new strings on that night, to be honest i usually use ernieball slinky but the local store ran out of those. so i had to use
the Didario strings and i didnt like them at all.. dry.gif haha
anyway I retuned and made sure that everything is well centered and I even checked the intonation and everything seems well.
please recheck this take and let me know if everything is ok or not..
Thank you again

Hi Anese, this sounds much better. Now your guitar is on tune so your soloing connects better with the backing track.

I have one question, do you know the Caged system? In other words, do you know the major and minor chords in 5 positions/shapes all along the fret board?

Second questions, have you ever learnt the triads?

Posted by: Anese Apr 7 2017, 02:21 PM

Thanks man

Caged system ? No man I never heard that phrase in my learning journey before.
let me add this: in my last take you can see that I started with a chord, I simply just saw that all those notes are in the same A minor pentatonic scale so I said lets play them together...and it seems that it worked for my ears at least.

and for the "traid" ? No I never heard that before either huh.gif

so lets learn the caged system and traids I guess.

Thank you my friend.

Yes, let's get into the caged system.

This system is based on 5 open shape chords: C - A - G - E and D.

OK, to make this simple, for some shapes, it's like moving a bar chord across the neck.
i completely understand the core principal and how these chord shapes can be moved across the neck to get different
chords.

beside the youtube video that you recommended i watched this one :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH44CeVzvCM

but I wat I didnt really get is at the end of the youtube video that you recommended
I can see that the instructor somehow utilizing this CAGED method to play "scales" up and down the neck.
and that seemed a little bit of a struggle to comprehend.

so, I understand how to utilize CAGED system for chords, but I still dont really understand how to utilized it for scales.
if you think that's enough and it's good to understand it like this and we don't need to go further with it "for now" then it's ok for me.

Thanks buddy

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 21 2017, 01:57 PM

Hi Anese, being able to understand the concept based on chord is a great first step! These shapes will be a guide to see other stuff around them. That's what happens at the end of that video but I don't want you to get confused. Let's start slowly with 1 shape.

You already know the major chords in 5 shapes all around the neck. This means that this shape will be familiar.

A Major
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

And if you move it... you get other chords. The name is based on the root (note in 6th string).

G Major
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

B Major

Does it make sense? Is this what you've undestood? Could you please do similar graphics for the other 4 chord shapes to let me see if you understand it well?

I've used our scale generator: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator/

Yes yes Gabby
I completely understand what you're trying to explain to me.
the shape you used is the E major shape.
and i can do this with all the other shapes.

and what I do not understand, is how I can use the CAGED system to play scales.
that's what I was asking you about.

if you think it's too early to study CAGED system to play scales, then we can pass this for later stages

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Apr 22 2017, 05:03 PM

Well, as you already know each of these 5 shapes and the concept behind. This is the next step.

This shapes will let you find on the neck the notes that form a chord. So in the case of this shape:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Those notes form C major chord: C E G (Root - Maj 3rd - Perfect 5th) Is that clear?

So now let's see how C major Pentatonic is form. A major penatonic is a 5 notes scale. The scale structure is Root - Maj 2nd - Maj 3rd - Perfect 5th - Major 6th. So if we'd like to form C Pentatonic major, we should use the notes: C D E G A. The scale shape would be:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Can you see how this scale shape is at the same part of the neck than the previous chord called C major (E shape).

Play the scale, play the chord, play the scale, the chord... do it many times and try to visualise how the chord is inside the scale, try to see both things overlapped. Notice how a major chord is build by (Root - Maj 3rd - Perfect 5th) and notice that the Pentatonic scale is build by (Root - Maj 3rd - Perfect 5th) + (Maj 2nd - Major 6th).

Once you'd done it, transpose that chord to another root. Let's say A major.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Let's build the Pentatonic Major scale around it:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

This same concept can be applied to the other chord shapes, and then we will apply it to every chord family, and scale.

The more you practice this, the easier will be to find the Pentatonic scale around that E shape chord... and that's the purpose of the CAGED system. It's a system to be able to learn, find and connect chord and scale shapes as well as some other stuff like arpeggios, triads, etc.

This is not anything that you'll learn in 1 day. It's a process of learning that will take weeks, months. But it's the way to go if you want to understand the fret-board in order to improvise and compose your own music.

Does it make sense?

yes Gabby it's all clear biggrin.gif

I dont really have an organized plan.
for the last two weeks I've been working on the (pentatonic scale + the CAGED system)
and I also tried to learn this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sogp1Fs9YIs.
I didn't want to play the whole song so I edit a guitar pro file for the song and made it as backing track then I tried to rip off the best chops i like out of the song.
you will notice that in some parts i get out of tune. but i guess I will do better than that as I polish my technique with time.

and for now.. my schedule will depend on what we are going to learn next.

let me know what you think.

Well, let's work on a musical lesson that uses Pentatonic scale in order to incorporate new licks into your vocabulary and work on technique in a real music situation.

Sounds like a good one to me, I'll start working on that one.

my practice plan will be working on this new lesson along with getting around the pentatonic scales plus refreshing on some of the old lessons that we worked on before.
by the way what do you about the offspring song thing that I did biggrin.gif it's ok if it was awful just let me know haha

Thanks buddy

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 2 2017, 01:45 PM

That's a perfect plan!

I've missed the link! I've thought that you where just linking the original song. Your version sounds good. It's a good plan to play full songs like this since it puts you in a real band situation. There is some room to adjust the first riff, and some details from the solo (bending pitch) but the overall sounds good. You are ready for the stage. smile.gif

Hello Gabby

sorry for the long absence, I had some issues to get full access to the lessons, but thankfully that was solved
last week and I was able to be back.

however, I want to let you know that I didn't stop playing and practicing during that time.
and for now I will continue working on your last suggested lesson.

Hello Gabby

I'll send a take of the bendy blues lesson once I'm ready, but for now, please have a listen to this first part of the lesson  bendy_1.mp3 ( 629.39K ) : 100
and let me know what you think of the Tone, is it suitable ?

And for the pentatonic scales, this is how i work on it: i play various pentatonic scales around the neck and try come up with a lick or two. here this take to refresh your memory, i posted it before as im working on the pentatonic scales

I'm also working on https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/15-Blues-Licks/ which you recommended before as workout for pentatonic scales but I didnt start working on it until now.

And for the caged system we discussed it on this thread and I learned the 5 shapes around the neck.
then I learned how to form major pentatonic scales around the Major chord's Root, 3rd and perfect 5th, and see the notes of the major pentatonic scales around the chord shape (Root, major 2nd, major 3rd, perfect 5th, and major 6th).

finally I would like you to recommend a beginner Sweep technique lesson, I see this technique is very important in modern guitar styles, and I think it's very important to start working and polishing it gradually.
what do you think?

Thanks

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 17 2017, 04:40 PM

Hi Anese! Great stuff!

The bendy's tone sounds good. It works for the style. I feel that the reverb could be warmer. What about using a room/hall rev, or adding some delay that adds a different kind of ambiance?

About improvisation, well, your method is ok! Have you worked on Pentatonic minor scales? You need to experiment with minor pentatonics, and add the B5 (blue note). Then, Dominant arpeggios based on the CAGED system.

Sweep Picking?

and then: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Masters-of-Sweeping/

Hello Gabriel

how are you,

I've been working on the bendyblues lesson lately, it's a tricky one and has some difficult areas.
however here's an unfinished take  bendyblues_take1.mp3 ( 1.34MB ) : 123
, have a listen to it and let me know what you think, I also tried to tweak the tone a little bit, I added some drive and reverb.

Thanks for the suggest sweep picking lessons, I started working on my sweeps, I'll try to post a video of the beginner sweep lesson in a few days so you can see how im actually doing it and if there's any mistakes that need adjusting before i go any further with my sweeps picking technique.

Hello Gabby
I'm glad that one went well and you liked it.
What about this one
?
Do you think it's good enough for the REC Room?
Let me know what you think.
Thanks a lot man.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 24 2017, 11:51 PM

Hi Anese! Great to find this video!

There are many positive things to say about your playing for example the good job with bending, the cleanness of your phrasing and with your tone. So I think that this take would pass at the REC section.

However, I also think that there is more work to do with this one in order to adjust timing which is a bit irregular, and tend to be before the beat here and there. It's time put all your focus on going better with the groove of the track. It's not an easy work with blues playing since the phrases include many different note values and duration.

There is also room to work on dynamics but this should be one after adjusting timing.

By the way, you can move forward if you are feeling bored of the lesson. Just let me know.

Posted by: Anese Sep 25 2017, 12:14 AM

Hi Gabby
Thanks for your notes, I'll post this take in the REC room and get more feedback.
I'll focous more on timing and try replicate the dynamics from the original lesson.
Hopefully I'll post a new take by Friday and see if things get better, otherwise we have to
Move forward.
Thanks man

Hi Anese!

Yes, timing is better on this one! There are just a few moments where you could play with more groove, for example, at 00:12, 00:16 and 00:34, but the overall is much better! There are also some bends that are not perfect (but not bad!) for example the one at 00:24.

Congrats on the great job!

Check it out, and let me know what you think.

Hi Anese,

I can say that many parts are sounding smoother on this new take. The next step is to polish details regarding bending pitches and timing. I note that many bends are close but not perfect (most of them are on the same times that I've commented before), do you identify them?

There are also some parts in which the rhythm is slightly different compared with the original lesson.

I recommend you two things.

1. Play the lesson along with the original lesson to imitate rhythm and pitches.
2. Isolate bends and trickier parts to polish details.

Hello Gabby

How are you

it's been a couple of weeks since my bendy blues lesson take .. oh wait haha, Happy New year man and I hope you had a joyful christmas holiday with your family and friends. I wish you a great year full of happiness and success.

so I was saying that I guess we made some decent progress in the blues lesson, do you think we can move forward ?

the previous days following the bendy blues lesson Take, I started working on both of these lessons:

- https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginner-Sweep-Picking/ (I asked for this) and I started working on it in parallel as I was working on the bendy blues lesson.
Im almost done with it, so I'll post a Take in the upcoming days.

- https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/15-Blues-Licks/: you suggested this lesson a while back to get some ideas from it for my improvisation skills, but
even though that the lesson's difficulty level is 2, i see that there are some tricky stuff regarding bending and vibrato that i can benefit from.

- finally, as you know that i have this bad habit of leaning aside from the practice routine and get hooked on those
youtube lessons, I tried to learn the opening riff from Chuck Berry's Johny B. Goode (may the lord bless his soul) and the other one is Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb ending solo, here are two videos I recorded, watch and let me know what you think in general.

oh damn i wrote so much that started to get tired, sorry for making you goin through all of this.

so here's what I will do, in the upcoming days I will post two takes, one for the beginner sweep lesson, and another for the 15-licks blues lesson, i think I get through them from the first take since they are not that tough, Hopefully!! tongue.gif

following that I will update you with a list of all the lessons that we worked on so we can decide what to work on next.

Thank you for your time Gabby, you always know how much I appreciate your guidance and support.

Have a nice day smile.gif

Hi Anese! Great to find news from you!

I don't think that learning songs from youtube is a bad habit. If you enjoy it and it keeps your playing, that's great!! I've enjoyed both new videos. It would be good if you keep on practicing these songs to polish details.

Regarding your plan, it sounds great. I'll wait for your vids and list of lessons to play how to continue here.

Happy new year mate.

Hello Gabby

How are you

As I mentioned before that i will post takes of the two quoted lessons,
the sweep picking lesson was not that hard, but the blues lick lesson
was a bit tricky, even though it's a level 2 lesson and it sound straight forward to get but it really was one of the most difficult lessons that I had to work on here, there's nothing seemed hard technically but the details are kind of hard to get.
however I posted two recording of both of the lessons,

let me know what you think.

Hi Anese!

Great job with both lessons!! The Sweep Picking one sounds perfect, I don't find any issue to fix on it. It's played tight and clean, well done!

The blues licks are also sounding good! I only think that you could put some more focus on expressing details, mostly to articulation and dynamics. I also feel that the tone doesn't help with this, I would try a bit less drive to be able to manage more dynamics in your playing.

Hello Gabriel

Thank you for your feed back

for sweep picking I started to work with https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Masters-of-Sweeping/ which you suggested as a next step after the begeinner sweep lesson, this one will go to the REC room once Im done with it.

also thanks for the less drive tip for the tone in the blues lick lesson, and for the dynamics I will try to focus on that along in the future lesson

do you have any suggestions for new lessons?
also please indicate something for theory. just to remind you that we worked before on the he
CAGED system, and A minor pentatonic scale.

Hi Anese, could you please write a list with the lessons that you've worked and you consider "passed"?

Regarding theory, it would be good to start applying those concepts and gradually incorporate new ones. What about recording an improvisation over this backing:

Hello Gabby

in the updated list of the lessons the we worked on there are some takes i previously recorded as an improvisation in Am, should make some new ones ?

Hi Anese, thanks a lot for the list. Please keep it updated so we can build your customized program on the way.

Regarding theory, you already know Caged System related to Major Pentatonic scale, and you've said Minor Pentatonic. Can you see minor pentatonic related to caged system too?

Besides those things, we need to get into major and minor scales, three notes per string shapes, triads, arpeggios and modes. But not everything at the same time, I'll guide you.

Related to technique, and musical lessons, let's continue with lessons that I consider the next steps.

For example, I would like to suggest these ones:

Yes Gabby, If for example i play A minor pentatonic starting from the A note at the 5th fret on the low E string, then I move the same fingering one full step I will get the B minor pentatonic Scale! (isn't that correct ?), or you meant something else ?

Well, there is a lot to do with Pentatonic scales but I think that it could be a good idea to start learning triads / arpeggios. The next goal is to learn major and minor arpeggios all along the fretboard, related to the caged system.

Learn those shapes and practice over a one chord vamp (backing track), one minor for Em and other major for E. Share some vids here after a week.

Yes, the idea is to balance your practice between soloing techniques, expression skills, but also keep your rhythm on shape. We'll get back to blues stuff, and also some more melodic rock stuff, but I'd like to see you playing some metal rhythms. With the pass of time, you can keep these lessons are part of your diary session to keep your overall technique.

Hello Gabby
I'm glad that you liked the minor arppegio jam, now here's the major jam let me know what you think about it.

Also as you know that I'm working on the Masters of sweep lesson, please take a look at the first part of it and let me know if you have any comments or notes about the tone and technique.

Great job Anese!!

Let's start applying those arpeggios to real music situations. The first backing track that we are going to work is Am - D.

The idea is that you start by following the chords with each arpeggio. Work on one part of the neck at a time, trying to visualize both arpeggios as well as A minor Pentatonic.

This is what you would visualize between frets 5 and 7.

Am Pentonic
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Am Arpeggio
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

D major Arpeggio
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Do this same thing along the whole neck. Play over the backing track. Start by playing the shapes up and down to get familiar, then create phrases combining everything. Start and end phrases using notes from the arpeggios.

Let me know if this is clear.

Regarding the Sweep lesson, it's going well but your right hand needs some adjustment. The "sweep" movement should be smoother and more natural. Check out the original lesson and compare the right hand motion with yours, try to emulate it.

Hello Gabby

How about this one ?

Thanks for the notes about the sweep lesson, im still working on it.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi May 30 2018, 09:00 PM

Hi Anese! This is a lot better!

I can hear how now you start to go more connected with the chords. The next goal is to make a more phrasing oriented solo, with a rhythm work less related to the chord changes. It can sound weird at first, but the idea is to make your overall phrasing smoother, using the chord tones as target notes, but not always starting phrases at the same beat that the chord change happens.

However, your video shows exactly how you need to practice this by now to get familiar with the chord tones, so please dedicate some more days to this, and share a new video in a few days, if possible longer to let me monitor your progress. Deal?

Ok, Gabby

In the uploaded video I intended to change the (arpeggio/sclae) chords simultaneously with the backing track chord changes as you explained here

did I misunderstand something there? or I did exactly as you explained ?

For the next video I understand that you want me to come up with something more connected and has less stops and you dont want me to change sclaes/arpeggio at the time the chord changes with the backing track.

I can hear that in my uploaded video the over all thing sounds like it's PROGRAMED .. or a ROBOT is playing because of the way I change chords with the backing track.

however It wouldn't sound weird to me to play Am (arpeggio/ pentatonic) over D chord or Play a D arpeggio over Am chord ..
this might be a little hard to explain but I understand that it's musically right to play anything from Am or D at any point of the backing track since Am and D rhymes over each other.

I know my overall explanation is mess .. laugh.gif

lets wait for my video and see if i got what you're trying to teach me

You did it perfectly! That's exactly the task of the assignment by now and that how you'll start working over new progressions in the near future. But once, you get familiar to this, and you can visualise the chord tones at every moment, the idea is that you continue developing this in order to make the things sound more musical.

Your explanation is CLEAR! And you are on the right track.

Please remember that we are at a "practice" stage now, so this tasks are not exactly what you'll be doing all the time when improvising in a real situation. You need to be able to go strictly with each chord, to then decide when you don't want to do it to get a different feel and melody.

Dedicate 6 minutes to watch this video where Joe explains it clearly:

Hi Anese! Congrats on the great job that you are doing here.

The progress on both directions (improvisation and sweep picking) is very clear here. I'm amazed on how much better are both things.

Your Sweep Picking technique is much more natural now, both hands are more comfortable, being your left hand the one that still need more time to be more relaxed while playing the different shapes. It's not a bad idea to dedicate some time to other similar SW lessons, in order to explore other shapes and combinations while you master this one.

The improvisation exercise is also a good step forward. If you compare this new video with the previous now, you'll notice that your phrases are now clearer and less predictable. This is the right direction, there is more work to do, but you are on the right way. In order to avoid boredom, we could go for a new backing, what do you say? This doesn't mean that you'll forget this one, but it's good to work on different backing to practice over different chords and grooves.

Everything sounds great here. You can continue with the Masters of Sweep lesson if this keep you motivated practicing, and I don't see why it can be a problem to dedicate some days/weeks to jam over those songs that you like. I've checked some of them and it's interesting, It sounds a bit "exotic" to me being from Argentina, and that makes it fresh.

Let's go for it and share here some jams to let me see how it goes.

For the sweep lesson im almost two thirds through the lesson at 90 BPM.
also as i mentioned before I was working the Metallica for beginners lesson, here's a take I recorded yesterday
please check and let me know what you think.

I picked this song to start working on, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0On7yBg7p8
I dont think there's enough space left within the song to able to jam along with it,
but as a start i tried to figure out the three chords of the songs and they are "D major at 5th firth, G major at 10th fret and A major at 5th fret"
do those chords sound right ?

I uploaded a part of the song where I jam along with it by strumming those chords. I added some tremolo to spice it up a little bit.
have a listen and let me know what you think.

Hi Anese! Great job here!!

Metallica style lesson is very close. The rhythm sections sound very good, There are not relevant issues there to fix, well done!!

The solo part is not bad but there are a few details to fix. The lick at 01:13 can sound more precise, and the bend at 00:18 is not reaching the right pitch. I would also try to make those vibratos sound less nervous, and more related with the tempo of the track. Your vibrato technique is not bad, but it could sound more natural.

I would also dedicate some time to polish your tone for this one. I feel that it sound with too much high frecuencies, it needs more low end. What amp are you using and what settings?

Regarding the song, I've checked the first chords and these are: D minor, G minor and A major. I'm listening to the audio that you've uploaded and I can't hear your guitar there, is it there?

I use Bias Fx as a plugin in reaper, I downloaded a preset for Metallica's Master of Puppets song, i think the preset still need some more work to sound tight.
anyhow from what you said that the sound has more high frequencies so all I did was that I reduces the high frequency knob in audio setting equalizer as you can see in the Amp screenshot highlighted by the red circle. (so does it sound better now ?)
if you want to recommend any more tweaks then check the screenshots of the other pedals in the chain.

Yes those are the chords im using, i just got confused and typed Major instead of Minor for the D and G chords.
And yes my guitar is there. check the other file i uploaded where i raised the guitar track volume so it can be more obvious when you hear it. ( I added some tremolo and chorus effect to it).
if you still can't hear it check the original song here maybe that would help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0On7yBg7p8

Hi Anese! Great stuff here!!

The new Metallica take is a lot better. Your playing on the solo section is much more precise and enjoyable now. There are only some pitch issues with some of the power chords. Maybe there is a tuning issue... or too much pressure?

The tone is also better. I would try adding a bit of presence, and maybe mids from that Hetfield Match Amp since I feel that the tone loose a bit of definition. There are lots of sections there so you can experiment with many different variations. Even the "tone" setting from the Tube Screamer could be a good thing to move and see what happens. Try with slight changes, and compare all the time with the original lesson or any Metallica's song.

Also, your guitar could be louder in the mix.

Regarding the song, I can hear your guitar now. It's sounding very good!

and here's the next part.

you might notice the that tone sound different in this part from the previous one, i had to raise the gain because in this part there are bends with long sustain.

Hi mate, great stuff here!

Metallica's lesson sounds better now! I still feel that maybe a different amp could give you a bigger sound, but it's good by now. I recommend you to dedicate some time every day, maybe at the beginning of your sessions (with fresh ears) to polish your tone.

Regarding the chords and knowing the key, please check out this thread: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=3160.

The Sweep Picking lesson is going really well! I can notice that you are starting to feel more comfortable with the technique. I don't notice any issue with your technique, just keep on the great job!

Hello Gabby

Thannks for the the recommending that guide.

in the last section Andrew talks about identifying the Key of a song by figuring out the Tonic chord.
here's a small paragraph that explains this technique:
[ in music there is always a tension and movement between different chords in the song, such that when you get to the tonic or root chord, there is a feeling of resolution, or being back on home ground.]

so in the song that i'm working on i have these chords D minor, G minor and A major. and by listening to the song i feel that the key of this song is Dm.

I even tried to play Dm minor scale over the song, have a listen to the uploaded track and let me know what you think.  FakrounJam1_.mp3 ( 876.73K ) : 118

I'll keeping working on the sweep lesson, I'm glad that it still sounds good till now

Thanks buddy

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Oct 2 2018, 02:18 PM

Hi Anese, how are you?

Yeah, that's right. Your song is in D minor. That resolution is easy to note because it's the chord that your ear feels as the most suitable to finish the tune, that one that gives and ending, or conclusive feel.

At this point, your thoughts are correct, but there is more to be learnt. You could hear that your tune is in D minor, but there are different "minor variations" so this could not be the natural minor that we all know. This is more advanced but I want you to know that there are more minor scales. Here is a list with the most relevant:

- Natural Minor (Aeolian)
- Dorian
- Phrygian
- Harmonic Minor
- Melodic Minor

Each of these scales are based on a root chord which is minor, but the other chords of the tonality are a bit different. This is a lot of material and you should go slow in order to avoid feel confused but it's important for you to know that maybe Natural minor is not the best option for you in this situation.

Talking about that song. Your chord progression is Dm - Gm - A.

If you explore the chords that form D minor tonality, you will not find one of those chords. Check it out:

Dm Emb5 F Gm Am Bb C

As you can see, there is no A major chord in D minor tonality. The other chords are there, Dm and Gm. This means that you need to make a variation at least when A major sounds. The best option is D harmonic minor, which includes A major instead of A minor.

Experiment playing D harmonic minor only when A major chord sounds and then tell me what happens.

Hello Gabby
Thank you for clearing the confusion.
I felt that there was something wrong with the previous recording, I didnt know what it is exactly, but after i read through your explanation it became all clear.

Now i made the same recording with the same licks that i was trying to perform but i changed that one single note that made all the difference C#. Everything feels more aligned and harmonized together now.
here have a listen to this  blady2_001.mp3 ( 814.69K ) : 144
and let me know what you think.

The next step for me now is to find a good tone to go with the song as I try fill the gabs with different licks between the song verses.
any ideas how to come up with sad/bluesy licks in harmonic minor?
I know this is more about experiment but I think it might sound better to just stick with harmonic minor through all the song instead of playing the minor scale on Dm and Gm chords and playing the harmonic minor scale on the A chord.

Thanks man

Hi mate,

yeah! now we are talking! Your new improvisation sounds good. I'm glad to know that the explanation helped to clarify this issue. It can be tricky and confusing at first, but it's very important to understand this concepts.

Regarding your question. You can play harmonic minor along the whole progression and it will sound good, however you can lose the effect if you repeat too much that C# note. So I would also try focusing on notes from the chords, using its triads (arpeggios, and focusing mostly on thirds and sometimes fifths or roots. You'll get a more melodic solo by doing it.

By the way, the best that you can do is to experiment with all the notes and see how each one sounds over the backing track. That's what I suggest doing at this point.

Hello Gabby, how are you?

sorry for this quiet long absence, i was working on that sweep picking lesson that finally Im done with, I'm at 90% speed, I need a bit more time to able to play it smoothly at 100% speed.

however, lets go back to the song that i was jamming with.
I odnt know if you can still remember the song and what we talked about, because it's been almost a month now,
so lets refresh your memory

this is the song i intended to jam along with:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0On7yBg7p8

after i learned that the song was played in the key of D minor (with the chord progression Dm Gm, and A) by listening and finding the main chord the song settle around was the Dm chord.
then when i posted my first take something sounded wrong as i kept playing the Dm scale over the song, and As a result you told me that the A major is not a part of the Dm scale and it would be a better option if I play D harmonic minor since it has that A note.
so here I uploaded this new video where I play both D harmonic minor and D minor scales, while avoiding playing Dm scale when the A chord is played.

so please check and let me know what you think.

Thanks buddy smile.gif

Hi Anese! Great to hear from you mate!! smile.gif

Thanks for the update regarding your Sweep Picking practice. I would really like to see a video of you playing it at the current tempo to be sure that there is nothing to fix regarding your technique. Feel free to share it this week!

About the improvisation, yes! I remember this very well. I can say that now your note choices are correct and that everything sound in tune and scale here. There is a new element that I would like to mark which needs work and it's timing. There are many phrases in your improvisation that are not going tight with the backing's tempo. The first thing that you should do is listen to this improvisation and try to detect these moments, and then tell me if you find them.

I would also like to know if you'd like to continue focusing on this backing to work on timing or maybe you'd like to work on a new one...

Hello Gabby

For the sweep picking lesson I have shared two videos playing the first part and second part of it at 90%

here they are :
pt.1 https://youtu.be/1xMoqEOkC28
pt.2 https://youtu.be/5m7yS4Joj6k

should I just upload the last part ? playing it at 90% ?
or you recommend to record the whole lesson in one continuous take at 90% ?

The only thing I can hear is that there are some phrases that might sound they started a bit before the rhythm chord.
but i can not really hear if the phrase is being played at the wrong tempo or whatsoever

i do not mind if you help me to appoint those issues and start working on them, BUT if you see that we better change the backing track material for a better learning musical environment then I do not mind at all.

Thanks Buddy

Hi mate,

The Sweep Picking lesson is sounding very good! I think that's it's ok to work on the next part at 90 and record a video. Then you can connect the whole thing and see what happens. Your technique is good, just try to make the right hand movement smaller to be able to play at faster tempos in the future.

Regarding the improvisation, the rhythm is not wrong, but it's not completely tight. These are some moments that I've marked: 00:10, 00:22, 00:38, 00:56. Listen to them carefully and try to notice what I mean. You need to identify the time figures that you are wanting to play and practice them tight over the backing.

I think that this lesson could be really helpful:

Hello Gabby

Hope you're enjoying your holiday and wish you a great new year. biggrin.gif

I've been working to play the third part of the sweep lesson at 90% speed

Please check and let me know what you think

Hi Anese! Great job here!

Everything sounds clean and clear in your take, and there are no technique or movement issues to comment. Everything is going well. You just need more days of practice and you'll master this one at normal tempo.

Keep on the good job mate!

Hello Gabby

How are you mate? been a while since last time i posted an update, i]ve been trying so hard to master this one.
here's my first full take in the original tempo.. let me know what you think.

playing three minutes continuously while trying main the tempo and different bend pitches was another challenge to me.

it feels great that i came close to this level anyway.

Thanks man

Hi Anese! Great to find news from you mate!

I can see that you’ve been working hard on this one. You can play the whole thing clean and without serious issues. I only notice some hand sync problems in the alternate picking section, and some cleanness and timing issues in the last licks.

I also think that your guitar has tuning issues when reaching the higher frets.:: maybe old strings?

Other than that, this is going well!

One tip that I’d like to give you is to check out some Yngwie or Jason Becker sweep picking videos to see how they do some kind of circular right hand movement when sweeping the strings. One of my first guitar teachers taught me this and it helped a lot to make sweep picking sound smoother.

Hello Gabby
How are you?
Thanks for your feedback,

I tried to work on most of the points you mentioned specially on the last two licks, and the alternative picking section.

Regarding the tuning issues on the hight frets

I think it's because the high frets on my guitar aren't as weary as the lower frets since I never played on those frets before, and i think that might cause some tuning/intonation issues. i'm not sure about that.
however i tuned again before i recorded this take and I noticed some high notes are a bit sharp but not to the point that make it musically unbearable.

I couldn't really find some videos that show this kind of technique with clear details. but i tried to work on that on my own.

Here's another take i recorded yesterday

Let me know if that was good enough for REC room.

Thanks buddy, I really appreciate what your doing for me. cool.gif

Hi Anese!

Congrats on your great job here!

I notice improvements regarding any of the elements that I marked. It’s nice to see that you are starting to do the right hand circular movement that I suggested. It will become more natural with some more time. It’s important to try to make the overall movement smoother and smaller.

I don’t remember any video that explains the circular movement but it can be seen in any Yngwie’s video played at slower speed.

Regarding the pitch issues, it sounds better however I recommend you to send it to a luthier to set it well. It’s very important for you ear training and overall practice to fix it.

This one surely passes at REC. It’s always good to share it there to receive feedback from different instructors.

Keep on the good job!!

Thanks Gabby

I'll post this in the REC room. I will definitely some good feed back that might help me polish the whole thing in the future.

Let's see how that goes in general then I will let you know what i'm planning to work on next.

Thanks

Great! smile.gif

As I'm checking your video again at the REC section, I would like to suggest something else.

I notice that your left hand fingers tend to separate too much from the freboard. You can check it for example at 02:34. This is not affecting your playing at this tempo but it can be a problem for faster licks. It's safe to get used to keep the fingers the closer possible to the fretboard, even when they are not pressing (or going to press) a fret.

Hello Gabby

Thanks for your note

I spent the last weeks trying to polish this lesson more and more and I even started to work on the BONUS licks which Ben added at the end of the lesson.
those Bonus Licks are played at "crazy fast" tempo i guess, but I'm approaching them slowly to while focusing on my fretting hand distance from the fret board and my hand posture as well which Kris asked me to work on it in the REC room.
(I'll post some videos in the future to let you see how that goes)

during the last weeks I went through some of my old blues lessons as well.

If you think I'm ready to move forward then i have some things on my mind to work on, just let me know and i will post them for you.

Thanks Master biggrin.gif

OH I forgot, on the days while i was practicing the Sweep Lesson, I brought my old guitar and tried to learned the intro of Little Wing, the tuning is not perfect but here you go

Thanks happy.gif

Nice Anese! That Hendrix song can be a good warm up! Keep playing it every day. smile.gif

What are your ideas to continue?

Posted by: Anese Jul 17 2019, 03:29 AM

Ok, here we go
I watched these two song vids a while back and i really wanted to learn both of them..

I suggest that maybe you can see what kind of techniques both of these songs have and find some lessons that cover those techniques.

and for theory (i'm not sure if this falls under theory or not) i want to work on this arabic song and try to play the singing line as a melody over a backing track which hopefully I will find somewhere on the internet or I'll end up trying to make my own backing track for it

so what do you say ?

If you have other suggestions that suits my current level of playing then let me know

Thanks buddy biggrin.gif

Hi Anese! Cool stuff!

I've watched both songs and the main techniques used there are:

- Alternate Picking
- Sweep Picking
- Legato
- Right hand Metal Rhythm
- Vibrato

We have lots of lessons covering these techniques in those styles.

For rhythm:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Thrash-Like-Mustaine/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/rhythm-guitar/power-galloping/

Alternate Picking:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Linear-Shred-Zone/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Yngwie-Malmsteen-Runs/

Sweep Picking:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Yngwie-Malmsteen-Arpeggios/

Legato:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato-stamina/

Most of these lessons are a bit advanced. You can use the licks as exercises to slowly increase your technique speed, or we can search for easier lessons covering these concepts. OR we can do both! Let me know what you think.
