What is up with the metronome lies. How on earth does it help increase your speed. All you gotta do is practice picking faster. A few weird sounding consistent beats wont help you acheive speed.

If you think wrong please post and give a reason.

Im not trying to argue but just need an insight into this theory.

For speed, then yes, you don't need a metronome. However, if you want good timing at high speeds, then the metronome is needed! And it's also great for keeping track of progress, etc, at least thats what I assume.

First off, there not lies. I use a metronome everyday to great effect. It has given me awsome control and timeing over the licks i play. Think of it like this, praticing correct timeing to a metronome gives you CONTROL and accuracy over you playing. Forget the speed, thats just a side effect (and a rather cool one at that).

Im guessing you havent yet studied any timeing theory yet. I would suggest you go over to the "time 101" series in the theory forum and take a peek. Failing that, try and play any of the GMC lessons without metronome practice and see if your playing sounds exactly the same wink.gif

The key is keeping your playing regular. To do that you need to practice in a regular way, not just "practice picking faster". If you practice without a metronome, sure you can get your speed up but your timing will likely suck. Practicing to backing tracks can help with the regularity issue, but you can't slowly speed them up to push your speed and control, and doing that is less intense conditioning because you usually end up just jamming instead of isolating a particular technique or run and practicing it exclusively.

So, it gives you:

- Regularity
- Timing
- Controllable speed increase
- Focus

If you think we're lying about it, try it yourself for one month, then come and tell us if we're lying smile.gif

I wish they were lies since I find the metronome very annoying. But I cannot argue with the results. I do not use it as much as everyone here tells you to but I do use it and it does help, especially if you are like me and have no rhythm or timing at all. I prefer using software to slow down and speed up a track, but even that as Andrew hinted at can be distracting from actually learning, since you do just become impressed with your self and start jamming, which is not a total waste of time but it is not the same discipline.

I get the point. Yet how could you tell the type of notes (like 8th or 16th) with tabs. Cause metronome plays at one beat intervals and you have to proportionally play your notes.

What type of metronome should i buy?
Electric or one with a needle pendulum thingy?

Thanks, i hope i can get control.

Thanks for showing me the light. Maybe using the word lies was too harsh, it was just a misconception in my noobish head! lol

Metronomes are a great tool smile.gif its the difference from being a fast guitarist and a fast guitarist who stays in time smile.gif. my example here is Herman Lee compared to ... John Petrucci. Petrucci is always in time AND reallllly fast. Herman lee is fast but hardly in time during his solos. this really shows. metronome practice makes staying in time easier and makes songs go smoother smile.gif not a lie about it smile.gif

You could get a software metronome or an electronic one - I don't think anyone uses the mechanical ones anymore around here but I could be wrong. If you do a search on metronome wyou will probably turn up many recomendations - I have a boss one, but use software now.

You are right about tab not giving you the correct timing, and it can be an issue. One way around that is to learn a little musical notation as tabs often come with music as well.

I always find that instead of just using a straight metronome, its a lot easier for me to use GP, and play along with songs, using the GP metrenome, and turning off other instruments and stuff!!

I dont like software metronomes. I use a Korg electric metronome, but I would prefer to buy an old-fashioned metronome. Also, non-software metronomes are easier to transport, and I like the idea of seperate devices. smile.gif

Also don't forget the ass kicking aspect of a metronome... the same as in sport you need somebody or something that makes sure you keep the pace....

Record yourself practising speed WITHOUT a metronome and you will notice only later when liscening to it that without a metronome you get slower as time passes.

The metronome constantly reminds you of your pace and makes sure you do not change it !!!

Also how are you going to measure your speed? How can you say you are fast or slow if you have nothing to measure it with?
