Recording Interface

Hey,

I just got a new computer, and want a recording interface for it. Something I can just plug the guitar straight in and get a good recording tone from, and has to be compatible with reaper.

Can anyone give any suggestions on a good setup? It has to work in windows vista 64bit. An option to take mics as well would be good, though it'll need to have some amp/effect sim software to be useable for me, as I'm trying to keep external parts to a minimum, I have a tube pre-amp I could stick infront of it, but thats it for the mean time, I'm a bit short on physical space you see.

EDIT: Line 6 POD Studio UX2 USB: I've looked at this and am interested, anyone have any opinions on it?

-Adam

The line-6 POD devices work with Vista 64 (I'm using one myself, UX2) but one guy I know is having a problem getting it to run in VST mode in Windows7; that is using it to re-amp a dry recorded signal. It works fine in application mode. The GX takes a quarter inch input, the UX models have a bit more as you go up in number and price.

The m-audio fasttrack is an equally popular alternative, and I also only know one guy that had trouble with it: GMC user Bnosam, if you want to PM him and ask about his feelings towards m-audio. I assume these also have more inputs/outputs as you go higher in price/model. Not sure.

There's also a behringer "guitar link" that seems to have mixed reviews as well. This one takes only the quarter inch jack, no XLR or fanciness. Also quite lower in price.

I think you can get better devices then UX2 mate. UX2 is only 2 channel interface although it tends to look like it has 4 channels. And it has a bit latency. If you tell me whats your budget I will be happy to give some suggestions.

OK, well my budget is only about 200 quid, maybe up to 300 at the most if there is something that I decide would be worth the extra money.

It has to have fx processing/amp modelling, as I want to use this system for practicing/recording without needing to mic up my guitar amp, and have minimal pedals etc. in front of it, as I'm short on space where I practice and also have to record/practice through headphones 90% of the time.

What would you recommend I look at?

EDIT: That's UK pounds, so about 350 USD I guess?

I would check with Guitar Rig products.
I have both the littl session interface (2 inputs, 2 outs, great quality) and the floor pedalboard as well.
Really good stuff!

The problem with Line 6 POD Studio models is that you are limited to their own modeling software POD Farm. Because of the latency, other modeling software is running poorly. Also, POD Studio UX1 is better option since it also has two channels and it is cheaper device.

Guitar Rig Session might be worth checking out, it comes with a much nicer bundle including Cubase LE 4, KORE PLAYER, and the KORE SOUNDPACK POP DRUMS.

I don't feel any latency with my UX2. In fact, the low (none?) latency monitoring is one of the biggest selling features.

Let's also be clear about the number of channels available to the audio workstation, and the number visible in podfarm. Podfarm will process 2 at a time (balanced xlr or their standard line-in) and either one of the Instrument or PAD.

However: the other 4-6 inputs are still available at all times in the workstation for sources that don't need to go through podfarm or to simply record more dry signals if you prefer to reamp with podfarm or some other plugin.

I wasn't aware of the UX2 ability to send 6 streams of audio into DAW. Thanks for clarification Jafo.

Low latency monitoring is applied only to POD Farm tho, If other modelers are used I found the device managing barely to keep one session of guitar rig opened on separate FX track.
Direct DAW monitoring has around 50ms of latency which is too much.

However, if only POD Farm is used, the device works great. I've used UX1 for quite some time, and it served me well. It has only 2 inputs, and it can process them at once creating 2 channel stream.

Ahh, yes that's probably true that only the monitoring of the 1-2 signals from podfarm are low/no latency. I didn't consider that. It may still serve this particular user's needs if he doesn't like the other options but that's a good point; anything else going only through the DAW is at the mercy of standard ASIO latency.

Thanks for this discussion Jafo now I can try to give a more defined answer to Adam:

- if you plan to use POD Farm and nothing else, and want 2 inputs, get the UX1

- if you plan to use different guitar modeling software products then you must tell us if you want USB or PCI version, how many inputs, do you already own some modeling software (since it must fit into the budget..)

Well, to be honest I probably will only use the podfarm processing software, I don't think I'd need any other processing at the moment, so long as podfarm creates good quality effects/models of amps and such.

I had a copy of amplitube 2 and a stealth-plug interface/adapter for it, but I lost the registration details for it and it wont run under vista without downloading an update (which I need the registration info for, hehe). I wasn't that keen on amplitube though, mainly just because I found it hard to find a sound that I liked and I had to run the output of the device back into the PC's input so I could hear the guitar and the backing track together through my headphones, which was really annoying. Also, it plugged straight into the guitar with this silly fat dongle thing that got in the way all the time, it'd be better for me to be able to use a simple guitar cable with 1/4" jack.

I don't have a band or anything so I wouldn't need to record more than just my guitar and perhaps vocals at the same time.
