GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Do Cats Like Guitar?

Posted by: Procyon Mar 1 2012, 11:50 AM

I usually close the doors when I am practising because my wife seems to be - hm, let's say bored when I am playing the same piece on and on... and because I have three cats living in my house I used to think that it would be better to keep their sensitive ears away from heavy noise...
So I shut the doors, cranked up the volume and made my guitar scream. After about half an hour I decided to take a break - and was really shocked when I realised that my little cat was sitting on my bookshelf during the whole session! It made me feel so bad... I still wonder if this could have caused some damage to her ears? Ond the other hand she didn't seem to try to leave the room - maybe she even enjoyed it? Did I finally made it to get my first groupie? rolleyes.gif

I'm absolutely sure cats don't mind Heavy Metal. My former guitar teacher's cat was sitting on the top of his amplifier, while he was playing on full volume, and the cat could hear normally, without any problem.

We have a cat at the mastering studio. She likes to attend sessions smile.gif .

That's possibly the coolest thing I've ever heard ! biggrin.gif

Yeah, in all my time of witnessing music & animals I honestly think cats and dogs love metal. smile.gif

Hey guys, thank you for your replies! Awesome story with the cat on the amplifier... And I can say that my cat behaves absolutely normal (as far as this is possible with cats... biggrin.gif ). You seem to be right - they really may love music and even heavy metal! If EMI had known this they would have replaced the dog in their logo (label "his master's voice") with a cat! laugh.gif tongue.gif

My cat always sits in when I practice even trying to squeeze on my lap between the guitar and me. Every cat I've had does it An old cat I had Called Hendrix was always with me too and this cat Llwyd as well. So ye in my opinion cats love the guitar wink.gif Or it could be that I sound like a cat playing the guitar huh.gif

Cats do like music - but they have some different tastes to what they like, it was proven by scientists.

They prefer fast beats over slow beats, and deep tones rather than high-pitched notes. This means mostly hard rock they enjoy, where as, heavy metal music blasted at loud volumes might be upsetting to them.

They perfer piano over the guitar, but might like both?

The owner didn't teach the cat any tricks to do this...

That's pretty funny! Maybe your cat is a reincarnation of a guitar player!!!! It seems like you have a start.... Maybe Hendrix? LOL smile.gif

I've got four cats but "my" cat Ellie always sits with me when I record. She is always right behind me on the chair I sit, tucked in a ball with whatever space she can find.

That's funny because it seems my cats don't really care for my music! ohmy.gif

Thats awesome Alex! I have two chihuahuas and they both like my guitar playing! One of them even tries to sing along, since she sometimes comes into the room I'm playing in, stands near the amp and starts to howl!............at least I hope its a howl of approval!! tongue.gif

I will echo what everyone has said. Cats definitely like the guitar. In general I am much more a dog person, I love my dog more than is probably healthy. (I think I may have to take a month off from work he when dies)

But, the two cats my wife and I have had both seem to always be around when I am playing. Our first cat, who recently died from cancer, REALLY loved my guitar, and would literally just sit next to me the entire time I was playing, and would normally start rubbing on the headstock and purring. No joke.
