Well, I found this particular concept to be of great use in life, after seeing its usefulness in martial arts and yes, it can help A LOT in music making/ guitar playing!

What am I talking about? Simply put, Zanshin is the state when the mind is fully vigilant and aware of its surroundings; when the mind remains still without being attached to anything and is totally present during every moment and action in the here and now.

In life:

The concept of Zanshin is that one should be fully present in whatever action is at hand. When I eat, I eat. My mind is fully engaged on the action of eating. When I fight, I fight. My mind is fully engaged on the action of fighting. I am in the here and now, totally immersed in the task at hand, and I will complete what I have started.

In martial arts:

Zanshin means being aware of one's surroundings and enemies, while being prepared to react and being unaffected by pain. It is a state of mind that takes years of training to develop.

In music/ guitar playing:

The attention to detail and focus on what you are playing, while anticipating what's next, in order to be fully relaxed and perform without being nervous or unsure.

Whenever I am playing something, I listen to myself and I always sing what's next, in my head while becoming aware of what's next. It feels relaxing and great to be in control smile.gif

So this is how I am trying to use Zanshin in music and I thought it might be a good thing to share with you guys!

Cosmin

Yes, Zanshin is really what we're designed to do... experience life at its fullest at every moment.

When people say 'Live life to the full' most people think they just mean go out and do as much as you can, amazing things, travelling etc.. yes, it can mean that for sure but it really means to be fully present in your life at all times to reap the most benefits out of every moment. smile.gif

If you're having coffee.. take some time to reflect on how lucky you are to have that coffee, how good it tastes, appreciate your company if you're in any, and also reflect on where the coffee originally came from and how it ended up in your cup. Loads of moments for the mind to appreciate smile.gif

I actually had someone mention this to me a couple of months ago. If you start practicing Zanshin at a no tempo pace whilst relaxing as much as possible, your level of 'talent' will increase dramatically. It makes you so good so fast, you wish you had tried it sooner.

EDIT: That is actually why I have been gone. I have been studying with very little distraction. I went back to work so I could buy new instruments(I just bought a brand new Les Paul yesterday), but whenever I study, I hide myself and shut down both my phone and the internet! It really does help to utilise Zanshin!

Mate, well, not letting yourself distracted by the things life throws at you occasionally or more often than that, is always a good way to follow Zanshin.

I'm curious to see your new guitar! Congrats biggrin.gif

Fascinating that you post this as I've mentioned to you in my thread I've gotten to a hump I have to get over. That my mind must connect with my hands, Body and Mind (Soul). I didn't say it in such words as Zanshin but what I was implying of myself is the same. It's not so much Mind over Matter, but perhaps Mind in Matter. I have restructured my practice as you suggested to slow it down allowing me to apply a visual and physical mindfulness to the mechanics of that with which I struggle. To let go the imagined difficulty, to simply re-visualize harmony and fluidity, to be in control. Freedom from that which binds us. To literally re dialogue the mentality, after all the mind believes what it's told.

At the risk of exposing my self may I share with you all some thoughts on the topic?

In one of my threads Cosmin, you were mentioning my timing and jokingly I stated "Is there such a thing as real perfection?". In reflection I came to realize that Creation and all that's in it, is perfection and is something the Mind discovers! It is found within, in the quietness of One's Soul of Mind and Heart, Zanshin, Enligtenment. Ben is very correct in saying "It is what we are made to do" we are mad to be Illumined. Cosmin you are right in mind, how you conceive to apply this in all your life, to be in control and at Peace. Dieter how wonderful that you will apply this to your guitar playing. It is available to all. We are made to discover our potential in the Unlimited Perfection of Creation and enjoy the beautiful Bounty that Creation is. To enjoy being Human, to unfold our Unlimited Potential. The Soul of Creator is though out and within.

Perhaps One could also imagine Zanshin as a Fabric of Soul or Spirit, an Intelligence of Self Knowing, a Fabric of the Unseen. A Supreme Universal Fabric of Spirit through out the Universe, that is literally the Creative Intelligence of the Cosmos, of which we are the same and part of. The Intelligence that knows all. We are One with in the Whole and the Whole is through out even though we are individual, we are never separated. To put it another way what's the difference between the Mind and All That Is, other than the limitations we think upon it? There is also the ignorance of the World since the beginning of time that is cast upon us. So in this way with Universal Mind, at first there is no Dust and now there is a Galaxy as in, at first there is no Thought in Mind and now there is a Manifestation. An Idea materialized. A song that is now played. Spirit has no concept of size only beauty. Reach for the stars we are the same! Do we believe?

I ask, what is a true Warrior at Heart? Is he simply one who is Fearless and ready to respond or react to any extent? Who is the last man standing? Is he simply the one with the strength or forethought to have done one more thing than the others, to stand in Victory Absolute? The question becomes, are we Fearless enough to believe in self, to believe Zanshin in self? On the Path to Self Realization, Enlightenment, and Self Fulfillment, are we not all Warriors, to be Fearless?

'course though, don't know if I'll ever play a guitar worth a darn laugh.gif

You bet is works! It is to Believe.

Very interesting post Geo smile.gif

I would agree with you that nature already built everything perfect.. we added the imperfections with our thinking.

I have another way of looking at the concept of 'perfection' in the arts of creation of performing. I believe true perfection does not and cannot exist, for it is a matter of perception. I think perfection should serve as something to aim at and if we aim for perfection we can at least attain excellence ! smile.gif

In terms of fearlessness, it also does not exist for there is not a human alive that is immune from their natural instincts which is to flood the body with adrenaline when it perceives a threat.. so even the toughest guys still feel fear. However, what makes the difference between one who achieves and one who doesn't is somebody who goes ahead despite the fear.. that is true living ! smile.gif

Wise words Ben! I have a funny story regarding the way in which we see perfection - My girlfriend always tells me she doesn't like something about the way she looks, you know how women are smile.gif But to me, she is the most beautiful and amazing woman in the world. I always tell her that her perspective would be rather different if she could see herself the way I do. So that old saying: 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' is very true in a lot of cases smile.gif Not that she is not beautiful on the inside and out, but sometimes, we dont see the forest because of the trees tongue.gif As we in Romania would say.

Nevertheless, great post Geo ... and as Ben said, you went on and fought your fears by exposing your thoughts here to us and hey, I for one am glad you did smile.gif There's a warrior in each of us, standing ready to 'fight' when the moment comes. We are the only ones who can decide if he stands or runs away!
