Got an RG1570 over the weekend. It's aweeeesoooommee. It's my first ibanez, until now I've only played strats/custom strats.

I got it second hand from ebay for just under £300, which I think is aroudn $200 USD? Anyhow, it's awesome. Except for one tiny scuff on the paint, it's in perfect condition. I got a mirage blue one, which looks quite nice. Not the best finish in the world, but it's still pretty cool.

I was planning on making a custom job from it, by refinishing it and putting a vine inlay neck on etc. But because I saved so much buying it, I might just stick new pickups in it and call it done, then spend the rest on the next guitar which I think will be a custom jem DNA swirl. I've already got a neck on order so I'll probably use the neck for that one. But who knows, things never seem to go to plan with guitars I buy, but it always seems to work out well in the end, even if it's not what was orginanly intended.

The edge trem was a massive pain to setup, its my first locking trem, so took a while to get it just so. But it's quite good now. I was going to put 10 guage strings on, but without adding another spring it wouldn't have it. I didn't want to add another spring as I wanted to leave that stopping 'bar' that holds the springs into the back of the bridge. I tend to get a bit over zealous with the trem arm, and it's happened before that at a gig the springs have just popped out of the bridge at teh end of a song, which takes ages to sort out, so I wanted to leave that bar in place, just to be safe. So it's got 9's on, but it's setup with a ridiculously low action, and never seems to go out of tune, i love it!

had one of these for a while now, I paid about the same for it 2nd hand as well, its an excellent guitar, as you mention able to set it up with a really low action, the only thing I didnt like was the stock pickups but I`ve since swapped them out, its one of my main guitars, I absolutly love it as well smile.gif

Gratz on an excellent purchase smile.gif

what pickups did you go with/what sound do you get from it? I bought this because I'm quite into shred, vai, malmsteen etc. at the moment. The stock pickups are actually ok if you drop them away from the strings a bit. The way it was setup when I got it home, the pickups were exerting quite a bit of string pull onto the strings and making it sound really metallic and horrible, but they're not the best I've ever heard.

I was considering dimarzio evo H and S in the neck/middle positions and a evo2 H in the bridge, though I've been hearing a lot about breed pickups as well? Not sure which way to go with it.

The ''Standard'' pickup choice for shred RGs is as follows:

DiMarzio Evolution Bridge - because it's just the best DiMarzio pickup^^ perffect for almost any style; shredders choice
DiMarzio Yngwie Malmsteen Single Coil middle - High output coil to match the humbuckers
DiMarzio Paf Pro Neck - THE neck shred pickup, if you want more output take the Paf Joe (Satriani modell)

I'll put some pictures up tommorow, will take some tonight and post them in the morning!

Yea I think I went the wrong way with my currency conversion there, d'oh! I thought it was a good deal on it though, it's only 1 year old (it's a 2006 model but the guy says he bought it from new last year) and had hardly been played. The frets on the neck are in perfect condition.

Thanks for the pickup recommendations. If I wanted to get a nice stratish clean sound (e.g. eric johnson) what pickup would be good for the middle coil? I figured I'd want the versatility if at all possible and have 2 shred buckers and a single coil for that softer bluesy/shredy sound a la eric johnson. Or is that not really possible on a guitar like this?

Think you might struggle with the higher outputs of the shredbuckers and a more vintage voiced neck pup, it wont be very balanced when switching between the two.

as Zakk wrote, the Dimarzio`s would probably be considered the classic replacements, depends what your budget is though.

I went with a set of Kent Armstrong pickups in the end and was very pleased with them over the stock pickups, I found the stocks broke up a fair bit using lots of gain, the Armstrongs keep their clarity, I have since swapped out the bridge for a Lace Dually pickup (Silver/Red combination) which imo sounds pretty sweet, so much so I`m going to try a dually (not sure which combination yet tho) in the neck, I never use the middle single coil pickup so I`ve left the stock one alone smile.gif

If you choose a vintage coil and high output humbuckers you will get a hugh diffrence in pickup loudness when switching and mixed positions will sound weird...

A maximum of versatility is assured with handmade pickups like Kent Armstrong or Bareknuckles, their pickups will sound better while covering a larger range of sounds but the sure are expensive (you will have to pay as much as you paid for your Ibanez for 3 pickups!)

Ah right okykoke, yea I think I'm trying perhaps to get too much out of the guitar. I suppose I've got strats I can use to get those sounds, so it's not too much hassle to just switch guitar.

I think I'm settled in my mind on an evo in the bridge, I suppose the neck pickup is the trickier of the two for me to decide on, either a PAF/PAF Joe as suggested or the evo 2. I guess I've always prefered vai's tone to satriani so that'd be a good indication to go with the evo2, but I suppose the only way to be certain would be to play guitars with them in and see. Not sure that's possible to find in a guitar shop though, places round here carry very limited stock on ibanez guitars, always seems they're more geared towards fender/gibson.

Attached are the pics from the auction, I forgot about these! I'll get some of my own up tommorow:

the bareknuckles are expensive but the Kent Armstrongs are reasonably priced, I paid £35 each for mine, and thats new, not 2nd hand smile.gif well worth the cash.

the Evo`s are definatly a good switch if you`ve settled on those smile.gif

I've heard mixed reviews on the lace pickups, it seems people either love them or hate them, so I'm just a bit warey of jumping in and actually ordering one!

EDIT: oh and what model armstrongs did you go with?

Yup agree on the Lace pups, I wouldnt say they are loads better than the Armstrongs, but I was pleased with them smile.gif

For the Kent Armstongs, in the Bridge I went with the "Super Distortion" and I think its called "The Rocker" in the Neck smile.gif
