Hello all, I just got my guitar dismantled because I'm planning on giving it a new paintjob. I have a pretty good idea of how to do it but i was wondering if anyone here has any experience with painting guitars. I'm also thinking about getting some new pickups for it sinse its already dismantled. I'm thinking of getting some emg pickups but I'm not an expert at pickups so I'm up for suggestions.

heres a picture of it right now. and no those dents/scratches were not caused by me. I bought it used about a year ago.

I will greatly appreciate any suggestions/advice ya'll have for me! biggrin.gif

Well It all depends on the kind of paintjob you want to do. So before I can advice you a little bit I would like to know what kind of finish you had in mind.

but the tip I can certainly give is: sanding, sanding, sanding and throw some more sanding in as well. And once you've reached the point your satisfied sand even more.

hope to hear more about what you have in mind though.

Cool!

All of these guitar update threads - scalloping the neck, painting the guitar has encouraged me to get my old Hohner Strat copy out and give it a total remake.

I'm using car paint for it, and for the designe I'm thinking of some kind of tribal stripes across the top and bottom with the stripes being whie and the rest black.

In that case I would sand even more. And after that thoroughly clean it with a duster and vacuum cleaner, we don't want sanddust in our paintjob.

Make sure you use a good undercoat before you actually paint the thing. And always sand between stages. If you are using a paintbrush make sure you cover evenly. You might even want to consider thinning the paint down, just to make sure the paint is applied even.

When you want to do tribal logos consider the following. Are you good at freehand painting (painting something with just a small brush)? Otherwise print the logo's and put them on cardboard, remove the parts that you actually want painted carefully, I would recommend using an xacto knife for that (But watch out, cause I can shave with those blades) and use them as a mould, then just use some spray paint to spray over the mould and onto the guitar and your logo's will come out nicely.

Hope this helps,
J

Heres an update of what ive done so far...

i used wood filler quite a few times on the dents and sanded it down after its dried. I'm thinking of using a dremel and smoothing out the edges slightly.

I'm sorry to say it like this, but that is far from sanded well enough. you'll have to see all of the wood, except for the bit where there has been routed.

The edges from what I can see look good though.

Should be sanded more, yes. Stripped to the bone, so you can see every part of the wood without no paint being left.

Yes, I brought out the electrical sander as well. It still takes a lot of time though. When you've sanded it roughly you need to do it again with a finer quality of paper to get it perfectly smooth.

Indeed.

Oh, and wear a mask or glasses when doing it! It can get very dusty and that's not healthy!
