Hello guys! This time I have a question for you. I've been searching for good midi drum tracks in styles like rock, metal and all the sub genres but I haven't find something cool. I use to create cooler riffs when I'm jamming over interesting drum grooves so that's why I want to have a good library of grooves. If you don't know where to find midi but audio please post the links by the way... 
Do you know where I can find it?

Hey Gab,
There are a couple of things you can do. If you can think of a beat that is familiar to a real song - do a search for that song's midi file online, then download and you can easily change bits and pieces to make it fit.
Also, I have purchased quite a few bundles from Groove Monkey. They have some killer off-time stuff. All these midi notes can be used with EZ Drummer too.

The expansion packs offered by TOON TRACK are quite good. They are only about $25 euros each. Have you checked out the toon track site? They offer wads of midi packs. www.toontrack.com

Yea Gab - all these midis I'm suggesting you run them through the EZ Drummer expansion packs. Like Drum Kit From Hell, Metal Heads, and Metal Machines...
These are the kits they've recorded for the midi notes...

My favorite kit is MetalHeads - the green one.
So regardless of how cheesy the original midi sounds, as long as the track the midi is on is assigned to the EZ Drummer expansion pack - it will sound like that kit.

this site is pretty awesome. I didnt know you could add this kind of thing into ez drummer! I just installed the free pack and its really good. you get a very decent amount with it.
Im totally buying the progressive pack.... and a bunch of others probably

yeah! this is how I used to do it. I will search for some midi files at google to see if I find good rock/metal ones. Do you know any site where you can find good quality midi songs?

One interesting way that I find to write drum grooves is to write polymetric rythms having say a x/16 pattern in the hi-hats/cymbals with a z/16 pattern in the bass drum and a 4/4 in the snare. Probably not something for your drummer to play unless he's/she's a proper beast, but something I guess it could be possibly. Here is an example file.
First it's 13/16 over 5/16 over 4/4, and then 9/16 over 7/16 over 4/4:

: 70
Of course, this might be more math than music, but it creates some interesting patterns at least.

The groove that you've got with this technique is very interesting. Don't worry about applying some math to composition, it's very applicable to rhythm patterns in progressive styles. I'm sure that guys from bands like Periphery, Protest the hero and Tool work use to work on drums in this way.
As we are talking about cool progressive drums, have you ever seen this video?

Speaking of Tool - I just read this morning where Adam Jones opened up a little about the law suit they have been going through for the past few years which has tied up the new album.
He also said that they have been using 7/4 time signatures - I can't wait to hear it.

I've never heard much Tool, but aren't they generally using all kinds of odd time signatures? At least "Schism" kinda jumps to mind when it comes to odd time signatures.

Oh, this was the real reason why we don't have Tool album finished! I'm glad to know that they finally could solve it.

His videos are great, it explained a bunch of questions I had. One major difference I see is how in Logic Pro the piano roll is how you write but all of the keys are just keys. I really like the idea of having the drums named. Anyone change the appearance or setting to get logic to behave that way?
