Yeah playing a gig will definitly have him motivated.Make sure you record that gig so you can maybe examine his performance and show him eventual problems.Band need to play and rehears a lot in order to sound tight as a whole.
One thing I was wondering, does he show same problems (not listening) when playing guitar and bass too ? When playing bass he needs to listen to the drummer , I don't know how he manages to ignore him smile.gif

I will defintly jam with him more, and tell him to try and focus on what me and the drummer are doing.

He better jam with the drummer instead of you. Drums and bass go together, you on your guitar listen to them. Don't interfear with the beat.

Sorry for sounding disrespectful or offensive. But I've done several gigs and in almost all of them we had to switch places an something positve has never come out of it. It takes time, you might start fighting about who plays what and when and bwah... just brings back bad memories from my gigs.

Well it's not the exact problems, but their similar.

When he plays bass than he focuses only on his playing because his too worried to hit every note, and when he plays guitar, it seems he just completly ignores the rest of the band, expecting us to catch up with him, or the opposite, to slow down for him.

Micke: When on bass, sure, it's most important he jams with the drums, but when on guitar he needs to play with both bass and drums.

Oxac: If it will turn for the worst, than avecourse we won't keep up with it, but so far it's going fine, we havn't fought about anything, because we both agree that I can play some stuff better than him, and vice versa, and we like it, because it gives our band alot of diversity, but if fighting signs will start rising and we wont tame it down than we will probably stop.

Smikey: I find it hard to bealive you'r band didn't win only because of instrument switching, and I don't want to play shred, I never felt the need to shred, and I just prefer more melodic play, again, like I said, I want to be a good musician, not guitarist.

Being able to play all styles on guitar is one of the characteristics of a well rounded musician...

For instance look at our instructors here - most have a good handle on most genres. They can play neoclassical shred but they can also play 12 bar blues boogie. You know what I mean?

I have, little to no interest in jazz music (for listening purposes), I have delved into jazz guitar for its improvisional techniques, unique chord voicing’s, and interesting rhythms. This has had an overall profound influence on my guitar playing in other genres...

I didn't say I can't shred, I can shred some when I really need to, but it's just isn't my thing, whenever I write something it ussually doesn't involve shredding, and when I play it it just isn't the same as when he plays it, becuase he feels connected to it and I don't, and the same thing for more melodical and vibrato/bending driven stuff, he isn't connected to it at all.

Basicly, it's a matter of personality and way of thinking.

Not to worry Iluha, as soon as you get your first gigs, and start rehearsing more I'm sure you will overcome that problem fast. As everybody suggested occasional jamming is great for practicing to listen to other bandmates. So the more you do your jamms, home rehearse, and studio rehearse it will be better and better.

BTW have you spoken to him about this matter yet?

Yeah, and I was happy to find out he's aware of the problem..

I'm also gonna give a sort of bass lesson on our next rehersal, I'll just show him how he needs to be in sync with the drums, and how to pluck the bass so that he sounds more like a bassist than a guitarist on bass tongue.gif
