Cubase wont get you better sound in that sense.
It's just software that makes the recording procedure alot easier There's tools and plugins that can EQ, compress, noisegate etc. your guitars in cubase though. But if your soundcard isnt any good, then you wont get that much better sound by mic'ing up. The mic has to go through the same soundcard. What soundcard do you have btw? -------------------- Guitars: Schecter Stiletto Classic, Jackson SLSMG, Ibanez RG-380 Japan, Gibson Les Paul Studio

well when i check it it says the Manufacturer is Reltek and the Soundcard is a Reltek High Definition Audio.. all i know is that it doesn't sound good with anything.. even playing songs just on itunes or w/e.. so now that im explorering recording a little bit option 1 comes to recording to my computer and so im trying to get my computer ready to handle it.. unfortunatly im on a laptop too soo changing hardware isn't very logical You can always buy an external USB or a firewire soundcard (with a addon-pcmcia firewire card if your laptop lacks it) This post has been edited by Trond Vold: Mar 31 2008, 10:07 PM -------------------- Guitars: Schecter Stiletto Classic, Jackson SLSMG, Ibanez RG-380 Japan, Gibson Les Paul Studio

Reaper is very cheap and extremey functional - I replaced Cubase with it. Plus TOny has a whole forum of lessons for Reaper!

I'd recommend Cubase, but there's many good programs out there...

I definitely recommend Nuendo/Cubase DAW.
ALso Trond is very right, you need a better sound card. Integrated solution is not good for recording. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

I definitely recommend Nuendo/Cubase DAW. ALso Trond is very right, you need a better sound card. Integrated solution is not good for recording. Yea, it will get you started but no more. You don;t have to spend a lot on this, but get a soundcard specifically made for recording and the results will be a lot better in quality and latency terms. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

As Nemanja said, converter quality on the card is the most important thing to watch for. The next thing to have is some DIBox or mic preamps integrated or external on the card based on what you gonna record with it.

Smikey,
Nimanja and Ivan are spot on wrt the quality of the conversion - including, or perhaps especially the AD/DA. As Andrew says there is a big difference between gamer type soundcards and those aimed more for recording (whether home, semi or pro). One of the major aims of a recording soundcard is neutrality - so that it doesn't artificially alter the way you perceive your recording. Gamer type cards are almost the opposite - they set out to enhance certain frequencies to provide a particular type of aural effect. Regardless of this the on-board Realtek soundchip isn't up to what you want to do so needs upgrading asap. WRT the sequencer - all the major sequencer platforms have some very happy users and some disillusioned ones. None, to date, is perfect. What is arguably best - rather like choosing a guitar - is to find one which you are comfortable working with and that fits your needs. One BIG advantage with Reaper is that you can try the full, uncrippled version before you decide to buy or not. Just on the subject of Audacity - it isn't really a sequencer but is an audio editor - that may be part of the issue you've had with it. Keep the program but use it for sound wave editing.
