As is usually happens at the end of the year, there are lots of balances and I'm curious to know which are the albums that you liked more from this year. In my case I have been listening to a lot of old music, so I can't say that there are too many albums from this year that I have been checking.
The first that come to mind: Daft Punk - Random Access Memory // Black Sabbath - 13 // Queens of the stone age - Like Clockwork
What about you? Which are your favorite albums and why?
Posted by: MonkeyDAthos Dec 26 2013, 10:05 PM
i got my hands on this album. Void Mother by Obscure Sphinx (Kind Sludge/Doom/Post-"metal") i wouldn't called it best of the year, but i really enjoy it.
here's a couple of songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjr7MnwLpPs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwqxXOG_0r8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAY5KV-W9A0
I really like the whole Doomish Athmospheric vibe and the vocals, she goes from very powerful melodic lines to harsh hardcore.
Edit: I also loved the latest Steven Wilson's album, "The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories)"

Interesting stuff guys. I haven't listened to this albums, just some songs by Alter Bridge and AIC. Thanks!

Carcass- Surgical Steel is my fav of the year too.
Joe Satriani- Unstoppable Momentum, The Reckoning- Hell Kisses the Earth, and Steven Wilson- The Raven That Refuse to Sing are in my tops as well!

Id also vote for Carcass and Amon Amarth, both had really cool albums this year.
I also really like 'Time tears down' by German melodeath band 'Parasite Inc'
And one of my favourites from 2013, '10 Foot Wizard'
An honorary mention for Insomnium, their http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKtlvdXN2aQ was damn good. Looking forward to a full album from them next year.

The AIC single - 'Voices' is in my playlist DAILY - I don't know what's up with this tune but I simply can't give it up And YES - that Daft Punk album is KILLER - I think they hit the jackpot when they decided to collaborate with Nile Rodgers!

Yea, Parasite inc was really impressive. I enjoyed that album.
Keep em coming folks Pretty sure I missed out on 90% of the good stuff that was released this year.

Well I usually don't listen to djent-like stuff too much but this dude did something I love - he wasn't afraid to make such a cool styles connections and he's got a great sense of harmony and rhythm variations. Whole production and arrangement is impressive.
My type is Bilo 3 by David Maxim Micic

I'm not sure how many 2013 albums I listened to but these come to mind
ADTR - Common Courtesy Jason Isbell - Southerneast Keith Urban - Fuse Altered Bridge - Fortress Nashville Soundtrack Season 2 Vol 1

Great choice here by Posterboy and Darius! I heard about Maxim from a friend of mine a few months ago and I was blown away myself! He had some Andy Timmons like sensibilities in the phrasing and all combined with the djent stuff.. pff! Just great!

Ooo just remembered
Close Your Eyes - Line in the sand
And the unforgivable one I forgot

A few other cool albums of this musically awesome year:
The Strokes - Comedown Machine (By far their best album, far more groove and punch and not as linear IMHO) Phoenix - Bankrupt! (guilty pleasure maybe, I saw them live and they're a solid band for a pop-rock act!) Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks Junip - Junip (very acoustic, soothing band) Foals - Holy Fire Arctic Monkeys - AM (though a lot of people tend to hate on this band, this album is pretty cool, and pop-rock) Oh and hum hum Dream Theater - Dream Theater (but I think most of you guys already heard it )
And don't forget Paul McCartney - New (not bad at all) and David Bowie - The Next Day (Nothing new really, though some cool songs)
BTW this is all personal taste, so don't start bashing the bands guys
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Dec 31 2013, 01:02 PM
I love the eclecticism in your selection A broad mind develops nicely in any field, not only music! I am not personally fond of bands such as Arctic Monkeys, but I took the time to listen and understand what they have to offer to the listener and I found things that I like.
When I went in the mountains with the band, last week, we listened to the old DT albums.. man that was music! Again, personal opinion, but they are sorting out albums nowadays simply because they have to do it, unfortunately.
I thought that might be you would like this guy's music:

This is a very intersting list. I loved NIN album, it's an amazing journey to listen it. I also enjoyed Artic Monkeys album. I still have to listen to the other ones, specially the ones by Paul and David.

Tell me about it, man my favourite albums are Images & Words, Metropolis Pt2 and Octavarium (because you got to dig the Rudess ) Very cool song by Ben Howard, thanks Cosmin. A friend had shown me his Call Me Maybe cover, this dude really does have some original musical ideas!

They definitely have some really cool arrangements, Plus since their 3rd album they have been close friends with Josh Homme, you can feel the QOTSA influence on some sliding guitar licks, and Homme even does backup vocals on two songs off the AM album. Just like the lead singer, Alex Turner, did for ...Like Clockwork album !

Hehe! And FINALLY someone who likes City and Color I am A HUGE fan!
This is my favorite these days:

City and Color are amazing!! I will admit I was not a fan at first but they grew on me LOL!!
The Girl is a great song but I think my fave off 'Bring Me Your Love" would be this...
The second verse is sung by one of my all time favourite singers Gordon Downie from The Tragically Hip. Not sure if you are familiar with them but they are simply brilliant (Well to most Canadians anyways ) Here is one of many favourite songs by them although it was hard to chose which one to post as so many great songs... so I picked 2 Picked a live one cause they are amazing in concert!!
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 8 2014, 10:03 AM
Can't see the City and Color song as it's saying it's not available in my country... The other tunes, hmmm, I think that as you said, they have to grow on me, as they didn't strike me immediately Will listen some more and see what happens..

Posted by: metalheadlady Jan 15 2014, 01:05 AM
Well, it's more of a mental list, but I guess I can think of some. I wouldn't mind some recommendations of Ayreon. Turisas, Mercyful Fate, Menhir, Waylander, Dream Evil, Tyr, Eluvietie, Falkenbach, Iced Earth, Wintersun, Primal Fear, Stratovarious, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Rammstien, Therion, Grave Digger, and Angra are all bands that I have at least one song by on my iPod, but I could use more and I'm not sure which ones. Sabaton, Svartsot, Moonsorrow, Skyclad, Elvenking, Avantasia, Firewind, Manowar, and Satavage are all bands that I've heard of in one way or another, but was likely too busy listening to something else to look them up. There's more, but I can't think of them off of the top of my head. Also please excuse any band name typos, autocorrect is really upset right now lol

Uh oh Aside ONE song from Firewind - which is actually a cover version, I don't listen to this sort of stuff it seems that Ayreon and Devin are the only points of meeting

Yeah, lots of power and folk metal sort of stuff. Living in America, it's sort of hard to find people that listen to metal who know what I'm talking about when I mention most of them, not sure how it is in Europe. I like some death metal as well, although I don't have much of a list in that area.

In Europe, there are a lot of folks listening to this sort of stuff. In my country at least, there's a BIG community. My problem with them is that they don't want to listen to anything else I'm the sort of open minded guy who can very well appreciate a GOOD pop song, rather then be 'WHAT'S THAT?? POP??? NO WAY MAN, I ONLY LISTEN TO METAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLL!!'
Kidding aside, there's a lot of nice stuff influencing folk metal for instance and there are a few bands performing this sort of music that I have a slight hunch you might enjoy
