Need Some Direction, Beginner who is interested in acoustic blues |

Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself! I have been playing for about 2 years, mainly learned from you tube, truefire courses and jamplay. The problem is that I don't get any feedback , so I am exited about joining this community. The following video has no rhyme or reason, just a bag of stuff , mixed chords that probally dont go together, offbeat strums and at the end, I stopped to think of some blues lines, so that is why the pause. Im just looking for some direction to go with the acoustic and what to practice. I have such a passion for this guitar but i feel that I am not improving or getting anywhere. Thanks for responding , Im hoping you guys don't boot me ! Dont ever feel you have to respond right away, sometimes, I will just get a hair about a new technique and post it. Anyways, thanks for your suggestion here is what I was thinking you suggested https://youtu.be/bogrzlARfPM It is so nice to actually get some feedback , everything has been bottled up in me for so long that it is nice to get it out and ask questions. You asked, what I hope to accomplish . I really just want to not be embarrased to go out in my backyard and play. Do some guitar playing with the wife so she can sing , karaoke style for are own enjoyment. Im 51 and have no inspiration that i would ever be good enough to perform in public , starting this late. Yeah!!! That's a big difference, I can tell you were already aware of these things. There might also have a been a bit of stage fright in the mix - you seem more confident in vid #2.

I don't know of any other way, then to actually go out there and perform in front of somebody. That's basically what you just did, and we were your audience. And see how much better yout second attempt was!  Can you image what it will sound like after 10 attempts? I would strongly recommend you to submit a lesson to the REC section of our site. Hey Slimfinger, nice to see you in the forum and meet you in the video
That was a really cool intro and I like your goals of playing nicely on the porch. I have listened to your playing and what I'm noticing is that you have pretty good sense of time keeping and you got those chords and changes nicely. How here come my personal suggestions and impressions What is missing, since you are aiming for solo performances of acoustic blues without vocals, is going pass regular chords strumming. My advice would be to first go for a bit more traditional blues shuffle rhythm and progression. For example this is a great lesson for that: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Intro-to-12-Bar-Blues/ (to internalize the 12 bar blues progression and practice that shuffle feel which I think you already can play). The next step I'd take myself would probably be one of the following : - Learn more blues sounding chords (Dominant 7 chords) to spice up your blues improvising: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Dominant-7-Chords/ - Learn some cool blues licks to add to regular strumming, this is what makes acoustic blues cool sounding to me : you can blend rhythm and lead playing. This is a good lesson as an example of that: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Expand...c-12-Bar-Blues/ Some future goals could be : - Learning some chord inversions (these are same chords but played in different notes order and in differnet positions of the neck) so that you can improvise in different positions on the neck. - Experimenting with bass + lead kind of acoustic blues line (I think this would be the delta blues genre) : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Finger...Blues-Patterns/ Hope this helps, please keep us updated with your progress, videos and follow up questions

As Kris has already said, that video shows a good based. I notice that you can change chord smoothly and can keep rhythm at tempo. However, the strumming is not very clear, mostly when you play with your fingers so you need to practice more this kind of playing trying to improve the tone that you get with your fingers when using this hybrid picking technique. I assume that you like Tommy Emmanuel, don't you? We have a lot of acoustic and clean stuff here, you'll finger finger picking, picking and also hybrid picking lessons that will help you to polish your rhythm skills in order to be able to play cover songs, and maybe start composing your own tunes if you want. If you want to receive feedback from different instructors here, you can join REC program and share your takes on GMC lessons to be graded and also receive comments and suggestions to improve your takes. Also, I consider very important to have a well designed practice plan based on weekly practice routines that cover different aspects based on your main goals as a guitarist. So from my point of view, these are the next steps to do here: Choose 1 or 2 lessons that you like from our archive (Acoustic lessons). Learn and practice them for some days. Then, when you feel comfortable, record yourself and share your take at REC program. You can also send me a PM when it's ready. Well, there are many ways to play this kind of stuff. I really recommend you to give a look and work on some lessons from Nicola Mandorino, who dedicates to mostly acoustic guitar lessons and gets a very warm and defined tone with his finger picking technique:
