GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Steve Vai & Andy James

Posted by: thefireball Jan 23 2012, 02:42 PM

...I heard something interesting!! I heard the exact lick that Steve Vai does in Building the Church - or perhaps my ears deceive me. Have you guys noticed this? I was wondering your thoughts. This is apparently something Vai created. And http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2_o1YKJ3kQ speaks of that, but...

First here is Steve Vai. It's the intro I am speaking of.

Now here is Andy James. It's around 1:52. It's a really short phrase.

I just found this cool and interesting. I own the newest Andy James album as of yesterday and it's so awesome. smile.gif

Not really surprising, Andy James is a big Steve Vai fan after all.

yeah, it sounds very similar but it's so short to consider that a plagiarism. I really like Andy's playing, I have his first album and will get his second one soon... smile.gif

Remember that we have this Steve Vai idea covered here: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Steve-Vai-Building-the-church-tapping-section/

Nice comparison, but the solos often tend to be very similar, and I don't think that this could be plagiarism in the true sense of the term!

It always makes me LOL when I see the fans in a Steve Vai, Andy James, John Petrucci, Yngvie show versus say a metal band like Metallica. Metallica gets a mosh going, whereas the neoclassical fans just stand there staring at the fretboard - the rest of the band could be sleeping and the fans wouldn't know it biggrin.gif

biggrin.gif I wasn't saying it was plagiarism. I just thought it was cool that it sounded so similar.

so does this mean I can copy the lick at

2:16
?

biggrin.gif

man, that sounds cool, so space-like, cosmic of some sort

biggrin.gif War March has become my most favorite track of this album. Yay. smile.gif

I'd much rather be in a band that has cute girls dancing in the audience, than be a virtuoso with a load of guy guitar players just waiting for me to screw up

Just as well really!!

As Guthrie Govan says, "Copy from one person and it's stealing, copy from many people and it's "research" "

All 3 Andy James albums are great, the first 2 albums have some great ballads. He has alot more to offer than just shreding, which is what the first two albums really show.....

But

Really, If you looked hard enough you could find many, many similiar ideas, licks, phrasing, pick attack, articulation of what Andy does compared to Nuno Bettencourt, Yngwie, Satch, Vai etc

This is the beauty of listening to an Original artist like Andy who himself has been influenced by some of my fav guitar players....

This is one of my ultimate fav Andy songs.... not what you are expecting? tongue.gif

That's a really nice song by Andy! The melodies are beautiful as well as the tone. Which album includes this song?

That's his second album, "In the Wake of Chaos" track seven....

So many licks and riffs and solos have been played, I don't believe these guys steal intentional like that. It's a coincidence IMO smile.gif
