Trouble Muting

I got a new guitar a while ago (ibanez rg350dx) and have trouble muting with it. With my old guitar the bridge wasn't right down near the strings but with this one it is so i can't mute very effectively and since the are only two places i can pick in its hard two mute well because the one closer to the bridge is to close and the one that is far away is too far away.

I know alot of people have this guitar so could any one tell me how they mute with it?

"the bridge wasn't right down near the strings but with this one it is" what do you mean by this? Do you mean its closer to the neck? The strings go through the neck.

How are you doing your palm muting? Make sure that your palm rests right near the bridge. So it should be behind the bridge pickup. Also don't press to hard it just needs to rest and make sure that not too much of your hand is resting on the string it should work

No.

Your hand should be lightly resting on the bridge. Not over any pickup, on the bridge.

but when ever i rest my hand over the bridge my pick goes over the middle pick up and i always seem to hit the pickup since the action is so low.

How close is the pickup???

You may be using too much of your pick to pick then.

The action on my BC Rich is low that I have fret buzz on the 1st and sometimes 2nd fret and I not have this problem.

I've also never heard of anyone else having this problem so I'm not really sure what else to tell you. Try looking and seeing how much of the pick you use. You may have to 'choke up' on it a bit.

i let the pick stick out about half a centimeter. But if you have ever seen the guitars there is a single coil pickup between the two humbuckers thats where my pick will be when i try to mute.

Ill see if i can gets some pictures to help.

Yeah i understand your problem. I used to have an RG370DX ibanez. It has that Floyd Rose bridge so it makes it hard to palm mute (it interferes and pokes your hand). Sorry, thats just the way the guitar is, the floyd rose isint designed for palm mute since its mainly meant for whammy bar and lead.

Use the best of your guitar. Practice Pavels whammy bar tricks lesson and do some shreds. Thats something most guitars can do.

Theres this guy who did palm mutes on the same guitar:

Hope that helps

My RG350DX arrived tonight and I see what you're talking about.

I just move my hand a little further toward the neck so that my pick goes between the neck and middle PU and it seems to be good for now.

Well guys, as you know I have a Jem wich is extremely similar to the RG350 - a couple of points;

1. When I palm mute my pick naturally falls between the neck and sincle coil pickups - I guess its down to the size of your hands, but I res the heel of my palm on the bridge, that is all

2. Even when I deliberately move my pick over the single coil pickup I still don't have a problem ... when you are picking you should aim to only lightly touch the strings and not dig in too much so I suspect you need to be a little more delicate and relaxed, which will help no end with speed.

Hope that helps ...

Hey John -

You should just play the $%#@ out of your guitar! You will naturally find a place that works for you on palm muting. Just keep trying different spots, near the bridge, and you will naturally progress to the position that feels and sounds right to you.

I don't think there is a all-in-one answer for this one, sorry. I've seen many players play differently and make it sound muted. It's really just about getting to know your guitar! smile.gif
