GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Doug Lanes' New Guitar!

Posted by: Doug Lane Nov 5 2013, 03:15 PM

Hey everyone, hope y'all are doing great!
Some of you might have heard of the tragic loss of my Peavey void 1 guitar. Though it will be missed, I have moved on to find a very good replacement. In light of the holiday season, I treated myself to a new BC Rich Mockingbird Pro X!

Posted by: Darius Wave Nov 5 2013, 03:40 PM

Yes...it was really shame...but I hope New one will compensate all the pain after previous loss smile.gif

This will be my first time owning a medium/high end BC Rich, I've heard great things about this line. It is currently shipping and should be here within the next two days! I'll be sure to make a video demoing it, will post to this thread later.

Hey guys! I've got a quick update on the new demo recording. I've been overhauling my songwriting process, and I've found a very efficient method of songwriting and recording on the fly! I've written an entirely original track to showcase the new abilities I've gained as a guitarist in expanding and modifying my gear and audio workstation. the video may have to come a little bit later, but I promise the song will be here very soon!

Edit: here it is! I'm afraid its lacking a bass track, but I think the super low tuning of my washburn almost kind of makes up for it. Enjoy the Axe Grinder!

Hey mate - it says here that the link isn't working .. sad.gif

Oh, that's odd... It's working just fine for my friends of facebook! try this link to my profile on soundcloud, the song should be the only thing on there.

Now it is working here as well! biggrin.gif

Hmmm smile.gif What have you used to record? I noticed that the low end is a bit muddy - more like a Slayer sort of tone - did you want it like that?

I'm recording with guitar rig 4 into audacity. The rhythm guitar tone was a subject of much contention for me. I managed to make it sound decent on my own speakers, but when I tried mixing in with the headphones it kind of fell apart. I honestly thing the detuned guitar sounds much better in the mix for the last half of the song.

A TON depends on your speakers/monitors. Also on your headphones. If you need to keep volumes low, I'd say get a really nice pair of headphones. Something like the AKG MKII series, or the SHURE PRO series smile.gif Use something like earbuds and desktop computer speakers only when the mix is balanced and ready. The cheapy desktop speakers and ear buds are just for checking what the lowest common denominator. Neither is adequate for actual mixing IMHO.

The good news is your playing is spiff and your guitar RAWKS! A few tweaks to recording and BAM!

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely consider some good studio headphones for my next equipment purchase! I already have some relatively good monitor speakers, TASCAM VL-S21 model. My laptop is equipped with BEATS audio, so the speakers on here are somewhat good, but I'm getting the impression that the software that controls the audio output might have skewed my ability to make good editing decisions. I'll try disabling it before I do any audio editing next time.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 13 2013, 03:45 AM

Sadly, you can't trust those speakers for mixing. sad.gif Those are "desktop computer speakers" that fall in the same category as "ear buds". To be used to check a mix to see how it will travel. You really need a pair of actual "Monitors" and good pair of headphones smile.gif

You can get a pair of KRK ROKIT 6 inch for about $300

Or a pair of Alesis control one for about the same price.

I've got a pair of each and they are a good, cheap way to get started with actual "monitors". smile.gif

They also have built in amps so you don't need an amp to power them.

As far as headphones, might look at the AKG 240. IMHO, they are about as "flat" (uncolored) as you are going to find for the price. They are not "bassy" like the Beats stuff, but instead have a somewhat neutral response which is better for mixing smile.gif They can be had for about $100. I've got a pair of AKG 240 MK II which is in the same line. This entire series is quite good and hard to be for the price. smile.gif

Todd's advice is great!

Having a set of studio monitors or studio headphones is a must. I havetested the KRK RoKIT8 which are the heavier relatives of the Rokit 6 due to the bigger speakers. They sound a bit sterile and more fit for electronic/bass beat driven music, rather then rock/metal.

I got myself the Yamaha HS 7 set, which sounds a lot more organic and fitting for guitar based music, then the KRKs, but it's a bit more expensive - I payed about 450 euros on the pair.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 14 2013, 02:01 AM

Those are very nice speakers and a fine choice!!! A bit more expensive though, so the KRK or ALESIS is usually a good "starter" set smile.gif Also, once you add a nice subwoofer to either pair of these cheaper speakers, the sound really comes alive and becomes much more organic sounding. Also, the KRK in particular have a high frequency knob on the back to help you find the sweet spot on treble.

So a lot depends on your budget. If you are looking to keep it under $100, I"d say skip the monitors for now and just get a pair of nice headphones like the AKG smile.gif Your mixes will thank you!!

Todd

Thank you Todd - you are right - start with something that will fit the budget AND do the job FOR NOW smile.gif It's important to start working as soon as possible - I for one regret a bit, in respect to the fact that I haven't taken the time to invest in a pair of monitors earlier smile.gif But ..as the say, better late then never!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Nov 15 2013, 01:28 AM

Very true! Never to late to add monitors smile.gif Like most folks, I started trying to mix on just whatever I had around. It really does help to have something more neutral sounding to mix on.
