Fantastic work, I gave you 10 for it you really nailed it! Now that we got REC out of the way tell me how did you find that triads lesson? Would you like to continue working on theory harmony and chord vocabulary or would you like to switch to some playing techniques in your future assignments for January?

Thanks Pedja, you're too kind with my RECs. smile.gif

Those triads lessons were interesting. It's nice to extend my vocabulary. I still need to check the cadences and substitutions a lot more because I still don't have them memorized.

Currently, what I do the most is improvisation over a backing track or over a loop I record. I would like to improve the way I improvise so it sounds less repetitive and to be able to record better loop or track with more structure, two line of guitar and to finally create a full song.

I am really always composing/improvising/creating and not playing a lot of full songs/cover. So I think I need both, theory and techniques. Not sure how you organize your lessons but if we can do both it's great. wink.gif

I certainly need to improve my speed, accuracy, tempo, rhythm, legato, etc... etc... etc...

A lesson that summarize quite closely my goals is this one :
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Angus-...-Billy-Gibbons/

I am probably not very clear, am I ? smile.gif

Keil I really like the way you lay out things here. I am going to assign you besides chord vocabulary, theory and harmony more assignments that are improvisation based so that you can accomplish your goals above. 2nd assignment will be posted soon so stay tuned.

Keil we continue with your 2nd assignment for January. This assignment is sort of like an essay or written theory behind your current level of knowledge. This will help me totally understand where you are at right now. I will give you couple of topics from which you can choose one (or more if you want to!) and write me as many things as possible about it. The deadline for this assignment is 17th of January. Here are the topics for your 2nd assignment :

1) Tell me everything you know about major scale. Construction, intervals, harmony and everything else you feel I need to know.
2) Tell me everything you know about cadences in major scale and its modes. Use C major scale for explanations.
3) Tell me everything you know about major scale modes?
4) Tell me everything you know about modal harmony?
5) Tell me everything you know about pentatonic scales?
6) Tell me everything you know about chord tone and tension relationship with harmony ?
7) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor scale harmony?
8) Tell me everything you know about natural/harmonic/melodic minor modes and harmony?

Remember, pick one (or more if you can do it by deadline) and write me as much as possible on given subject. I want to read and understand how you approach and understand given material.
Deadline for this assignment is 3 days from now, 17th of January. Let me know if you have any questions!

Pedja

P.S. This assignment if you ever decide to finish all the questions thoroughly should help you reach your current goal regarding improvising and songwriting!

Hi Pedja,

I didn't have a lot of time so far. I am really busy those days. Tomorrow I am going to ski and have a dinner in the evening. I will try to work a bit more on this assignment on Sunday.

Here are a few answers :

QUOTE
1) Tell me everything you know about major scale. Construction, intervals, harmony and everything else you feel I need to know.

So, first a scale is composed of 5 (pentatonic) or 7 notes chosen among the 12 available. The major scale answer to the sequence 2212221. It's the sequence of semi-tones between each note of the scale. So, for example, if we start from C we will have :

C + 2 = D
D + 2 = E
E + 1 = F
F + 2 = G
G + 2 = A
A + 2 = B
B + 1 = C

Each note in a scale sound good with the others and give the playing a mood. We can play the major scale on 5 positions along the fretboard, each position separated by 2 semi-tones.

About intervals, they are the distance in semi-tones between 2 notes. Example, C to E is 4, C to G is 7, etc... I didn't memorize the names of them for now. wink.gif Then if you change an interval you can create Diminished, Minor, Major or Augmented scale by adding 1 or 2 semi-tones to the 2nd, 3rd, 6th or 7th interval.

Ok, so now about harmonies. If you play chord on a scale, let's say C Major and you play only Major chord you will get something that sound not really harmonized. So to create a better harmonization we have to adjust some interval in those chords and play the C Major scale as :

C Major, D Minor, E Minor, F Major, G Major, A Minor, B Diminished

Adding the 7th interval, you would play :

CM7, Dm7, Em7, FM7, G7, Am7, Bm7b5

I will speak about modes in the next question bellow.

You can also speak of note in a scale by degree using Roman numerals from I to VII.

QUOTE
2) Tell me everything you know about cadences in major scale and its modes. Use C major scale for explanations.

There is 7 different modes.

Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian

Though, the Locrian mode is not really used as it sound too odd in a progression.

Now about cadences, they are a progression of scale degree in a given mode which are pretty common in western music.

An example for the Ionian mode is : I IV V I or II V I I
Dorian : I IV or I II
Phrygian : I II or I VII or I II VII I

In those examples, what's important to remember is that the specified scale degrees are not relative to the key but to the root note in the specified mode. Meaning if the key is C, Dorian is D and Phrygian is E so the Dorian cadences are Dm, GMajor or Dm, Em.

In fact, Minor scale is the same scale than the Major scale but starting from the Aeolian mode. But it is better to consider it as a completely different scale. The minor harmonization is :

Minor, Diminished, Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major

Intervals of the minor scale are : 2122122

Harmonic Minor is the same scale with the VII raised by a semi-tone.
The Melodic Minor is the same scale but with the VI and VII raised by a semi-tone.

Mmmh, that's pretty much all I know I think.

Keil here are your remaining assignments for January.

3rd assignment :

- Read Superimposing with Minor Pentatonics post HERE
- After reading the whole thing with related link posts, think about choosing one chord and one approach you will use for recording!

4th assignment :

- After you have chosen your approach, record a backing track with that chord and on top of that record yourself soloing with 1 or all 3 minor pentatonics corresponding with that mode!

Let me give you an example here. Lets say that you have chosen A minor as your chord. Now you also chose A minor to be treated as II (Dorian sounding). In that case you should play minor pentatonics from G major scale ( A , B and E minor pentatonics) over A min chord in the background. 4th assignment asks you only to pick 1 but it also allows you to use all 3 pentatonics if you want to.
Backing track doesn't have to be anything fancy for this purpose. Just guitar playing the chord will do, if you want to add bass and drums to that to make it sound tighter go ahead!

Deadline for these assignments is 31st of January! Let me know if you have any questions !

Hi Pedja, here's my take...

I played a riff on Em7 and Fm7 and then improvised only on minor pentatonic (aeolian) on Bm, C#m, Em and Fm (fret 7, 9, 12 and 14). This is 100% improvised, some passage are not that good in my opinion.

There are not a lot of notes but I am pretty happy with the mood.

Well, enough said... smile.gif

Hi Keil,

I like your take a lot. Very musical. For assignment purpose I asked only from you to pick 1 chord. I know that could sound "boring and predictable" but that was the assignment. This is however very musical piece and I will accept it since you used superimposing and did more on top of that wink.gif

Sorry Pedja, I pushed it a bit further. I didn't notice the only one chord.

But in fact I started with Em7 and then considered it as Dorian, Phrygian and Aeolian and then moved to other degree playing Aeolian Minor Pentatonic. I noticed that the Phrygian mode sounded really awful most probably because I used Fm7 and that made the cadence not harmonized at all. smile.gif

Anyways, I think I now understand how superimposing works. I must say that this assignment really opened my mind to something new because before that I thought that you can only play in one mode over some chords. I never really tried to play out of that logic.

So thank you for this assignment it was really useful to me.

Keil thank you for doing the assignment. I am very glad you enjoyed and found it beneficial. I always try in each assignment to present you something new and interesting but at the same time open up your views and horizons regarding improvisation , composition and harmony.
New thing happening in February, more assignments like this perhaps or would you like to focus on some playing technique as well?
