GMC Forum _ Recording _ Home Studio-jamming Setup

I have a Marshall JVM 410 4 x 12. Little much for the house, but hey that's rock n roll.

I also have:

Boss DR-880 Drum Machine

Mackie 808S Mixer/Amplifier

I use the drum machine less now that I have been practicing scale theory( thanks Andrew) and using backing tracks to jam with. What is everyone else using in thier home studio for practicing? I thought of selling the drum machine and Mackie and buying a good stereo or bookshelf system to play the jam tracks with. But then the Marshall would probably over power the backing tracks.

Thanks,

Chaz

TBH Chas I'd keep both. The Boss is a good drum machine of its type and mixers are always good (Don't know your model but Mackie are generally good). Second hand you won't get their real value.

A drum machine can come in handy for putting down a groove/beat to play too that will be synced and much more interesting than a metronome. Mixers - well you always will need something to either combine signals, help master or help mix. Plus the mixer will probably have the outputs that will let you use active monitors plugged into it - save buying a stereo amp for the speakers... So all in all if you can try to keep them.

Cheers,
Tony

Thanks Tony. I like that idea. I think I will keep the Mackie and the drum machine and get some good speakers or studio monitors for playback. I had a pair of cabinets with 15" speakers, but sold them yesterday. Took up too much space.

Space - or lack of it - is a pain m8 sad.gif .

Having said that I've always ended up regretting selling gear in the longer term (ok maybe not the Casio VL Tone Keyboard and the Rolf Harris Stylophone. Er the Bontempi toy piano had to go as well.

As did the wife, kid and pets. Opps they're still here...)

Cheers,
Tony

My wife thinks I should be able to do all this with headphones. Go figure!!!

You got a real nice setup! Headphones is what I use most... I live in a apartment and mostly at nights/early mornings the strings get a pick, would love to have a marshall tho

I'm lucky there Chaz - my wife was a professional radio station producer and manager and now trains people in it. So she sort of knows and understands the need for gear - although sadly not my need to have multiple guitars sad.gif .

Chaz,if you like guitar sound in my lessons, try Korg Pandora PX4D.
It's a pocket size unit(not expensive tho) and has both drums and bass patterns to jam and practice over with.
Also, there is stereo headphones jack which means your wife shall be more than happy. smile.gif

I will check the Pandora out. Your sound is excellent an appreciate the lessons. I have decided on keeping my Mackie 808S and buying matching Mackie speakers. The drum machine should sound great. A bit much for my house, but the neighbors shall get an earful. I picked up a Eric Johnson Stratocaster this week and waiting delivery today. It is going to be a great weekend.
